Diane Mardy, superintendent of the pre-K-8 school and the Board of Education did not respond to emails sent Wednesday asking for case numbers and other information related to the decision to deliver virtual instruction.
Caragh Wilson has two children in the school, in first and fifth grades. Both received remote instruction this week, she said.
“I question the decision to not clearly define what a 'potential outbreak' is, and to abruptly not let healthy children into their classrooms for three days with their teachers with less than 24 hours-notice to parents,” said Wilson. She said she did not intend her comments as criticism of the school or its teachers, who seamlessly transitioned to educating the children through the pandemic.
School districts with mask-optional policies can reinstate universal masking policies at any time, the New Jersey Department of Health said in guidance issued after Gov. Phil Murphy lifted the school mask mandate on March 7. An executive order that required masks to be worn indoors in schools and child care centers was in effect since summer of 2021 due to the public health emergency caused by the pandemic. Schools reopened for full-day in-person instruction in September 2021.
Schools are permitted to switch to virtual instruction during school closures that last more than three days during a declared emergency, or if directed by "the appropriate health agency" to do so, according to the Department of Health.
It's unclear if the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School is operating under guidance from a local health department. There is no declared state of emergency in New Jersey at this time.
The Murphy administration has said it is not likely to declare another public health emergency in the immediate future, although it is aware that COVID numbers are climbing globally and monitoring the rise.
"At this time, we do not anticipate any need to reinstate universal statewide mandated protective measures," the Department of Health and the governor's office said in a statement Thursday.
Sixty-one percent of New Jersey’s schools reported COVID-19 cases to the state in the first week of March, with positive cases among 0.92 students and 1.44 staff members out of every 1,000.
In Bergen County, 131 new student cases were reported in the first week of March from 274 schools reporting. Statewide, one COVID-19 outbreak was reported in schools for the week ending March 14. An outbreak is defined as three or more positive cases that are linked within a school setting.
The state has advised school districts to follow its weekly COVID activity tracker. Bergen County and the rest of North and Central Jersey showed moderate virus spread for the past week.

Located within the picturesque natural beauty of the New Jersey Skylands lies Ringwood Manor. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the home is situated in Ringwood State Park, which is filled with walking and hiking trails waiting to be explored. The manor has roots in Native American history and dates to the early 20th century.
Guided tours of the manor are held Wednesday-Sunday on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. except noon. Admission to the manor costs $10 for adults, $8 for seniors ages 62 and older, $5 for children between 6 to 12 years old and free for children 5 and younger.
When planning your visit, be sure to check the latest updates on the tour schedule and make sure that the manor is open, as that’s subject to change. Starting from Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, a small, per-car parking fee is required to enter the park. New Jersey residents pay $5 and out-of-state residents pay $7.
On Sun., June 5, the manor is having an Antiques and Vintage Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the event is free, with only a small parking fee to enter the park. It’s ideal for the collector and enthusiast alike.

It’s a special way to celebrate the history and legacy of The Hermitage with the local community.

Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, Morristown
Morristown is synonymous with history, and the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum is just another example of a local piece of it. This Federal-style, brick mansion was the former home of the Macculloch family during the early 19th century and has ties to the American Revolution.
Macculloch is open weekdays by appointment only, and, when visiting, make sure to schedule at least 48 hours or more in advance. You can also choose to roam the gardens of the property as it is open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
For tours of Macculloch, tickets cost $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, $6 for students, $4 for children ages 12 and younger, and free for children ages 5 and younger. Members also have free admission.
The museum also hosts a multitude of events, both in-person and virtually, which is ideal for families with young children. During the months of May and June, there are Growing in the Gardens events from 2 to 2:30 p.m., held on every other Tuesday, and Guess & Go Story Time children’s events held every Wednesday in May at noon (both events are held virtually on Facebook Live).

Here are the 30 municipalities that had the highest average property taxes last year:
30. North Caldwell
The average property tax bill in North Caldwell was $16,556 in 2021, an increase of $242 from the previous year. It is one of seven Essex County municipalities in the top 30.
Closter is one of 14 Bergen County municipalities in the top 30, more than any other county in the list.
The average homeowner paid $16,654 in 2021, an increase of $271 when compared with the previous year.
28. Old Tappan
This Bergen County borough fell four spots in the rankings thanks to a $479 drop in the average property tax bill. Homeowners in Old Tappan paid $16,680 on average in 2021.
27. Woodcliff Lake
Woodcliff Lake saw the biggest jump among municipalities in the top 30, with the average homeowner paying $16,804, an increase of $722 from the previous year.
Homeowners in Allenhurst, one of three Monmouth county municipalities in the list, paid an average of $16,911, a $542 increase.
Maplewood, Essex County, saw the average property tax bill climb $511 to $17,143 in 2021.
The rise was on pace with the $522 jump in 2020 and the $479 climb in 2019, making the three-year increase a total of $1,512.
The average homeowner in Westfield, one of only two Union County locales in the top 30, paid $17,319 in 2021. That’s an increase of $153, nearly twice the $78 jump homeowners saw in 2020.
Another Bergen County municipality, Ho-Ho-Kus saw its average property tax bill increase $453 to $17,340 in 2021.
22. Glen Rock
Glen Rock borough in Bergen County saw a relatively small increase of $81. The average property taxpayer here paid $17,454.
Homeowners in this Bergen County borough paid $17,614 on average in 2021, an increase of $378 from the previous year.
The jump is slightly higher than the $332 increase from 2019 to 2020.
20. Franklin Lakes
Property taxpayers in Franklin Lakes Borough, yet another Bergen County municipality, paid an average of $17,659, an $135 increase when compared with 2020.
19. Upper Saddle River
The average homeowner in this Bergen County borough paid $18,154, a decrease of $732 from the previous year.
That’s the biggest drop among towns on the top-30 list and a massive swing when compared with the $373 increase from 2019 to 2020.
Property taxpayers in Summit, Union County, also saw a drop in the average bill. Homeowners paid $18,254 on average in 2021, a decrease of $60 from the previous year.
The average property tax bill in this Bergen County borough was $18,563 in 2021, a $293 increase over the previous year.
16. Saddle River
Saddle River homeowners paid $18,683 on average in 2021, a rise of $473.
That’s an improvement from the $708 jump in 2020, bringing the two-year increase to just under $1,200.
Ridgewood Village, yet another Bergen County municipality in the top 30, had an average property tax bill of $18,998 in 2021. That’s an increase of $492 from the previous year.
Ridgewood homeowners paid $18,506 on average in 2020, $18,234 in 2019 and $17,970 in 2018.
The average property tax bill in Mantoloking, the only Ocean County municipality in the list, fell $30 to $19,274 in 2021, a massive swing from the $892 increase in the previous year.
That brings the three-year increase on the average tax bill to $1,512.
Homeowners in this Monmouth County borough paid $19,757 on average in 2021, a $640 increase over the previous year.
Deal’s average residential property value of $3.04 million was the highest of all New Jersey municipalities.
12. South Orange
South Orange in Essex had an average property tax bill of $19,749 in 2021, an increase of $602 when compared with 2020.
Property taxpayers in Mendham Township, one of only two Morris County municipalities in the list and home to former Gov. Chris Christie, paid $19,824 on average in 2021.
That’s a relatively modest increase of $30 when compared with the previous year.
The average homeowner in Montclair Township, Essex County, paid $20,320 in 2021, a $357 increase over 2020.
9. Essex Fells
Essex Fells was one of four municipalities in the top 30 to see a drop in the average 2021 property tax bill. Homeowners paid $20,374 on average here, a decrease of $39.
Homeowners in Princeton, the only Mercer County municipality in the top 30, paid $20,510 on average in 2021, a $158 increase over the previous year.
The average homeowner in this affluent borough in Bergen County paid $21,438 in 2021, a $396 jump when compared with 2020.
Alpine is home to public figures and celebrities, including Kellyanne Conway, Chris Rock and former New York Yankees starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia. The borough had an average residential property value of $2.8 million in 2021.
The average property tax bill in this Monmouth County borough rose $438 to $21,591 in 2021.
5. Glen Ridge
Property taxpayers in Glen Ridge had an average bill of $21,647, an increase of $433 when compared with the previous year.
4. Mountain Lakes
At $21,868, the average property tax bill in this Morris County borough climbed $243 when compared with 2020.
Homeowners in this Bergen County borough paid $21,966 on average in 2021, a $414 increase over the previous year.
This borough had the highest average property tax bill in Bergen County, with homeowners paying $21,983 on average. That was a $606 increase over 2020, lifting Demarest two spots in the rankings.
Topping the list yet again is Millburn, with an average property tax bill of $24,485 in 2021, an increase of $115 when compared with the previous year.
The average home in Millburn was valued at $1.3 million in 2021.
Tavistock had the highest average property tax bill in New Jersey in 2021 at $30,715. While technically a municipality, this borough remains in a category all its own.
There were only three homes and roughly a dozen residents in Tavistock as of 2019. It was formed in 1929 so members of the Tavistock Country Club could bypass laws that prohibited golfing on Sunday, exemplifying the type of privilege that’s typically afforded to only the wealthy and politically connected.
The average property value in Tavistock was $1.7 million in 2021.

Here are some of our graduating seniors with nursing jobs on their horizons:
Isabel Finan (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) is to pursue a Medical/Surgical RN Residency Program at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ. She was an active Buccino Leadership Institute member, Servant Leader Scholar, Sister of Alpha Gamma Delta, and Student Sacristan through Campus Ministry.
Veronica Lomangino (Marlboro, NJ) has served as a tutor in the Academic Resource Center since her sophomore year and now is one of the head tutors (peer tutor coordinator) and trains all the tutors for the whole university despite majors. She has been in the Student Nurses Association since freshman year and now Sigma Theta Tau, and is also a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. Veronica is a Catholic studies minor and was in the Honors Immersion for her final clinical rotation. She will be working at Hackensack University Medical Center on the oncology unit upon graduation.
Madison Loustan (North Haledon, NJ) will be beginning her career as a New Graduate Nurse Resident at the Valley Hospital. She has been an active member in her sorority, Alpha Phi, serving on the executive board as the Executive Administrator. She has served in many leadership roles on the Seton Hall campus including as the secretary for the Population Health Student Ambassador Program, student representative on the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, and student representative for the Diversity and Inclusion Initiative within the Buccino Leadership Institute.
Katie Mazzarelli (Old Bridge, NJ) is a Servant Leader Scholar and has also been an active leader in the Buccino Leadership Institute, Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority, and Student Nurses' Association, while working part-time as a Patient Care Technician. She was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Katie will be working at Morristown Medical Center and was accepted into the Hire Learning Program for new graduates.
Both Madison and Katie are members of the CareCall team that participated and placed in several entrepreneurship contests. The project focused on using technology to replace the current call bell system within the hospital setting. Read the full story.
Richard Maize (Los Osos, CA) has accepted an offer to develop his nursing and leadership skills in the ER at French Hospital Medical Center of San Luis Obispo, CA. He is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, as well as a participant in Greek life, Club Rugby, and the Buccino Leadership Institute.
Jacqueline Rodriguez (Edison, NJ) has accepted a full time offer at Morristown Medical Center in the Emergency Department, the same place she served her immersion. While at Seton Hall, she was involved in Student Government Association as a Nursing senator her freshman and sophomore year. She was also a peer educator for KNOW MORE, a Resident Assistant in Xavier Hall, and an active member of Global Medical Brigades.
Isabella Valentino (Stony Point, NY) is ready to begin her career as a RN in NJ in the Step-Down Unit at Chilton Medical Center. Graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Minor in Spanish and a Certificate in Leadership, Isabella has also been awarded membership to Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. Outside of school, Isabella was a member of the Student Nurses Association, served on the Buccino Leadership Institute student council, and held numerous positions in her fraternity, Alpha Omicron Pi.
Taylor Wilson (Tinton Falls, NJ) has been a member of the National Council of Negro Women and the Black Student Caucus. She was also part of a group of women who were able to reinstate the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Rho Upsilon chapter at Seton Hall where she served on the E-board as Vice President. Taylor is also a Seton Hall Cheerleader, cheering for both men's and women’s basketball team at home games, conferences, and tournaments. She was also a Population Health Student Ambassador for which she served as the Public Relations Chair. Taylor is currently interviewing for nurse residencies and entertaining offers from Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, and Monmouth Medical Center.
