What Causes Menopause?

The most common reason for menopause is the natural decline in a female's reproductive hormones. However, menopause can also result from the following situations:

Oophorectomy: This surgery, which removes a woman's ovaries, causes immediate menopause. Symptoms and signs of menopause in this situation can be severe, as the hormonal changes happen abruptly.

Chemotherapy: Cancer treatments like chemotherapy can induce menopause quickly, causing symptoms to appear shortly after or even during treatment.

Ovarian Insufficiency: Also called premature ovarian failure, this condition is essentially premature menopause. It happens when a woman's ovaries quit functioning before the age of 40 and can stem from genetic factors and disease. Only 1% of women suffer from premature menopause, but HRT can help protect the heart, brain, and bones.

Depression

If you're a woman going through menopause and find that you have become increasingly depressed, you're not alone. It's estimated that 15% of women experience depression to some degree while going through menopause. What many women don't know is that depression can start during perimenopause, or the years leading up to menopause.

Depression can be hard to diagnose, especially during perimenopause and menopause. However, if you notice the following signs, it might be time to speak with a physician:

  • Mood Swings
  • Inappropriate Guilt
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Too Much or Too Little Sleep
  • Lack of Interest in Life
  • Overwhelming Feelings

Remember, if you're experiencing depression, you're not weak or broken - you're going through a very regular emotional experience. The good news is that with proper treatment from your doctor, depression isn't a death sentence. And with HRT and anti-aging treatment for women, depression could be the catalyst you need to enjoy a new lease on life.

Hot Flashes

Hot flashes - they're one of the most well-known symptoms of menopause. Hot flashes are intense, sudden feelings of heat across a woman's upper body. Some last second, while others last minutes, making them incredibly inconvenient and uncomfortable for most women.

Symptoms of hot flashes include:

  • Sudden, Overwhelming Feeling of Heat
  • Anxiety
  • High Heart Rate
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

Typically, hot flashes are caused by a lack of estrogen. Low estrogen levels negatively affect a woman's hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls body temperature and appetite. Low estrogen levels cause the hypothalamus to incorrectly assume the body is too hot, dilating blood vessels to increase blood flow. Luckily, most women don't have to settle for the uncomfortable feelings that hot flashes cause. HRT treatments for women often stabilize hormones, lessening the effects of hot flashes and menopause in general.

Mood Swings

Mood swings are common occurrences for most people - quick shifts from happy to angry and back again, triggered by a specific event. And while many people experience mood swings, they are particularly common for women going through menopause. That's because, during menopause, the female's hormones are often imbalanced. Hormone imbalances and mood swings go hand-in-hand, resulting in frequent mood changes and even symptoms like insomnia.

The rate of production of estrogen, a hormone that fluctuates during menopause, largely determines the rate of production the hormone serotonin, which regulates mood, causing mood swings.

Luckily, HRT and anti-aging treatments in Siesta Key, FL for women work wonders for mood swings by regulating hormone levels like estrogen. With normal hormone levels, women around the world are now learning that they don't have to settle for mood swings during menopause.

Weight Gain

Staying fit and healthy is hard for anyone living in modern America. However, for women with hormone imbalances during perimenopause or menopause, weight gain is even more serious. Luckily, HRT treatments for women coupled with a physician-led diet can help keep weight in check. But which hormones need to be regulated?

  • Estrogen: During menopause, estrogen levels are depleted. As such, the body must search for other sources of estrogen. Because estrogen is stored in fat, your body believes it should increase fat production during menopause. Estrogen also plays a big part in insulin resistance, which can make it even harder to lose weight and keep it off.
  • Progesterone: Progesterone levels are also depleted during menopause. Progesterone depletion causes bloating and water retention, while loss of testosterone limits the body's ability to burn calories.
  • Ongoing Stress: Stress makes our bodies think that food is hard to come by, putting our bodies in "survival mode". When this happens, cortisol production is altered. When cortisol timing changes, the energy in the bloodstream is diverted toward making fat. With chronic stress, this process repeatedly happens, causing extensive weight gain during menopause.

Low Libido

Lowered sexual desire - three words most men and women hate to hear. Unfortunately, for many women in perimenopausal and menopausal states, it's just a reality of life. Thankfully, today, HRT and anti-aging treatments Siesta Key, FL can help women maintain a normal, healthy sex drive. But what causes low libido in women, especially as they get older?

The hormones responsible for low libido in women are progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone.

Progesterone production decreases during perimenopause, causing low sex drive in women. Lower progesterone production can also cause chronic fatigue, weight gain, and other symptoms. On the other hand, lower estrogen levels during menopause lead to vaginal dryness and even vaginal atrophy or loss of muscle tension.

Lastly, testosterone plays a role in lowered libido. And while testosterone is often grouped as a male hormone, it contributes to important health and regulatory functionality in women. A woman's testosterone serves to heighten sexual responses and enhances orgasms. When the ovaries are unable to produce sufficient levels of testosterone, it often results in a lowered sex drive.

Vaginal Dryness

Often uncomfortable and even painful, vaginal dryness is a serious problem for sexually active women. However, like hair loss in males, vaginal dryness is very common - almost 50% of women suffer from it during menopause.

Getting older is just a part of life, but that doesn't mean you have to settle for the side effects. HRT and anti-aging treatments for women correct vaginal dryness by re-balancing estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. When supplemented with diet and healthy living, your vagina's secretions are normalized, causing discomfort to recede.

Fibroids

Uterine fibroids - they're perhaps the least-known symptom of menopause and hormone imbalances in women. That's because these growths on the uterus are often symptom-free. Unfortunately, these growths can be cancerous, presenting a danger for women as they age.

Many women will have fibroids at some point. Because they're symptomless, they're usually found during routine doctor exams. Some women only get one or two, while others may have large clusters of fibroids. Because fibroids are usually caused by hormone imbalances, hysterectomies have been used as a solution, forcing women into early menopause.

Advances in HRT and anti-aging medicine for women give females a safer, non-surgical option without having to experience menopause early. At Global Life Rejuvenation, our expert physicians will implement a customized HRT program to stabilize your hormones and reduce the risk of cancerous fibroid growth.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis symptoms are much like the effects of PMS, and include pelvic pain, fatigue, cramping, and bloating. While doctors aren't entirely sure what causes this painful, uncomfortable condition, most agree that hormones - particularly xenoestrogens - play a factor.

Endometriosis symptoms are much like the effects of PMS and include pelvic pain, fatigue, cramping, and bloating. While doctors aren't entirely sure what causes this painful, uncomfortable condition, most agree that hormones - particularly xenoestrogens - play a factor.

Xenoestrogen is a hormone that is very similar to estrogen. Too much xenoestrogen is thought to stimulate endometrial tissue growth. HRT for women helps balance these hormones and, when used with a custom nutrition program, can provide relief for women across the U.S.

 Sermorelin Siesta Key, FL

What is Sermorelin?

Sermorelin is a synthetic hormone peptide, like GHRH, which triggers the release of growth hormones. When used under the care of a qualified physician, Sermorelin can help you lose weight, increase your energy levels, and help you feel much younger.

 HRT Siesta Key, FL

Benefits of Sermorelin

Human growth hormone (HGH) therapy has been used for years to treat hormone deficiencies. Unlike HGH, which directly replaces declining human growth hormone levels, Sermorelin addresses the underlying cause of decreased HGH, stimulating the pituitary gland naturally. This approach keeps the mechanisms of growth hormone production active.

  • Benefits of Sermorelin include:
  • Better Immune Function
  • Improved Physical Performance
  • More Growth Hormone Production
  • Less Body Fat
  • Build More Lean Muscle
  • Better Sleep
 Hormone Replacement Siesta Key, FL

What is Ipamorelin?

Ipamorelin helps to release growth hormones in a person's body by mimicking a peptide called ghrelin. Ghrelin is one of three hormones which work together to regulate the growth hormone levels released by the pituitary gland. Because Ipamorelin stimulates the body to produce growth hormone, your body won't stop its natural growth hormone production, which occurs with synthetic HGH.

Ipamorelin causes growth hormone secretion that resembles natural release patterns rather than being constantly elevated from HGH. Because ipamorelin stimulates the natural production of growth hormone, our patients can use this treatment long-term with fewer health risks.

Hormone Replacement Therapy Siesta Key, FL

Benefits of Ipamorelin

One of the biggest benefits of Ipamorelin is that it provides significant short and long-term benefits in age management therapies. Ipamorelin can boost a patient's overall health, wellbeing, and outlook on life.

When there is an increased concentration of growth hormone by the pituitary gland, there are positive benefits to the body. Some benefits include:

  • Powerful Anti-Aging Properties
  • More Muscle Mass
  • Less Unsightly Body Fat
  • Deep, Restful Sleep
  • Increased Athletic Performance
  • More Energy
  • Less Recovery Time for Training Sessions and Injuries
  • Enhanced Overall Wellness and Health
  • No Significant Increase in Cortisol

I’ve found that when it comes to Florida, people are usually in one of two camps: fans of the Florida East Coast, or those that love the Gulf side. I’ve been up and down the Florida Atlantic Coast, driven the busy I-95 from north to south all the way to the Keys, and visited many great beaches along the way. I’ve also enjoyed the irresistible Gulf side of the Sunshine State.

Both sides of Florida have awesome beaches, but they’re different experiences. The Atlantic side offers beautiful ocean views and great surfing. On the Gulf side, no real waves are crashing, but the calm, warm turquoise waters are idyllic for many. And those Gulf sunsets are simply spectacular.

While all beaches can be busy, some are decidedly less crowded than others. To increase your chances of finding fewer people on the beach, go on a weekday. Grab a towel and make your way to any one of these fabulous uncrowded Florida beaches.

Note: Some information in this article was obtained via a hosted stay. All opinions are my own.

1. Bunche Beach Preserve At San Carlos Bay

Bunche Beach is a small, uncommercialized picturesque beach tucked away from it all near Cape Coral, Florida. There are no services here and very little in the way of amenities, but that’s part of its beauty! There’s almost nothing here except the beach, a birding trail, and a place to rent kayaks. It’s a natural, unspoiled environment that’s perfect if you want to get off the beaten path.

Grab a chair and take in the amazing views, or walk the beach and watch the birds and shell critters. Do what people were doing while we visited and cast a line from shore. The fisherman we chatted with told me he purposely came to Bunche Beach to avoid crowds. Though you may have to walk a little ways from your parking spot to the beach — as parking is not plentiful — it is worth it.

2. Coquina Beach

Directly over the bridge from Longboat Key lies Coquina Beach on laid-back Anna Maria Island. The turquoise waters are some of the most stunning I’ve seen. This beach is absolutely gorgeous with breathtaking water views! It offers concessions at Coquina Beach Cafe, lots of parking, covered picnic tables, playgrounds, private changing rooms, and showers. Swimming is allowed in designated areas and there’s plenty of sand so you can stretch out and not bump into other beach-goers.

This is one of the best beaches in the state. You can easily spend your entire vacation soaking up the sun on Coquina Beach and enjoying Anna Maria Island and nearby Longboat Key. In addition to amazing beaches, both areas offer a variety of places to stay, from upscale resorts to beachy cottages and unmatched waterfront dining experiences!

3. Lido Beach

Lido Key is a hidden gem near Sarasota on Florida’s Gulf side. Located between Longboat Key to the north and Siesta Key to the south, gorgeous Lido Beach is the spot to be. While the beach is smaller than the more well-known Siesta Key Beach, it’s also less crowded.

This convenient beach offers easy parking and a very large, wide beach with plenty of room to set up your spot for the day. It’s also located within walking distance from St. Armand’s Circle where you can do some shopping or have lunch. Lido Beach offers exceptionally soft, white sand, glorious views, and warm Gulf waters. The vibe here is laid-back and relaxed — you won’t find a big party crowd here. Plan to stay for sunset; the views here are spectacular.

4. Manatee Beach

The public beaches on Anna Maria Island are some of the best beaches in Florida. If you’re looking for a gorgeous beach with all the comforts of home, you may enjoy Manatee Beach. Located in the town of Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island, Manatee Public Beach is a popular family-friendly beach that can get crowded — especially on weekends. But it’s quite a large stretch of sand, so you’re able to find your own space and not feel crowded.

As for conveniences, Manatee offers a ton: a large cafe on the beach, nice bathrooms, beach chairs for rent, volleyball courts, and a kid’s playground. It’s all set alongside stunning turquoise waters, and clean, white sand dotted with palm trees. You may even catch a glimpse of dolphins and manatees from shore.

Pro Tip: Anna Maria Island offers a free trolley that makes stops through town and at the beaches. Take the trolley to avoid parking hassles.

5. Yacht Club Community Park

A drive around Cape Coral allowed us to find one of the best uncrowded beaches of our trip. Yacht Club Community Park is a hidden gem. Not only is there a good beach with calm water on the Caloosahatchee River, but the park also offers bathrooms, showers, a playground, picnic tables, barbecues, great parking, and a good view of Cape Coral.

We enjoyed walking out on the pier and watching the fisherman reel in the catch of the day. The Boathouse Tiki Bar and Grill, located adjacent to the park and the Yacht Club, is open to the public. The tables out back line the water and are just about as close as you can get to the water without getting wet. It’s a perfect place to enjoy breakfast.

6. Beach At Canaveral National Seashore

Located at Canaveral National Seashore on Florida’s Space Coast, Playalinda Beach offers miles of beaches, all seemingly untouched and just waiting for you to explore. This barrier island is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, making it a wildlife paradise. It’s also home to world-class surfing as well.

7. South Inlet Park Beach

One of my favorite uncrowded beaches in Florida is on the Atlantic side in Boca Raton. A favorite among locals, South Inlet Park Beach offers a pristine beach, clear waters, and a quiet environment. Located approximately 5 miles southeast of downtown Boca, South Inlet Park is open every day from sunrise to sunset.

This relaxed waterfront features not only a beach but also a playground, picnic area, barbecue pits, and benches to relax. A family-friendly beach, South Inlet Park has something for everyone to enjoy. In addition to lounging on the beach, you can take a walk on the jetty, watch boats at the inlet, barbecue with friends, or simply enjoy nature.

8. Englewood Beach

Another great beach for the family, Englewood Beach is a well-maintained, scenic spot with gazebos, a boardwalk, and pretty landscaping. Located on Manasota Key, the beach offers beautiful clear water, a tranquil setting, and lots to do. Amenities include a boardwalk, accessible parking and restrooms, showers, water stations, volleyball courts, a basketball court, horseshoe pits, a playground area, picnic shelters, and barbeque grills. Umbrella and chair rentals are available, making your beach day even better.

9. Stump Pass Beach State Park

With no commercialization, Stump Pass Beach is for you if you like a quiet and natural surrounding. Here, you can discover all kinds of birds and plants, search for shark’s teeth and shells, and bask in the unspoiled wilderness of the park.

Look for wildlife as you walk the 1.3-mile hiking trail that goes through the park’s five distinct natural communities. Enjoy the amenities that will make your visit more comfortable including showers, bathrooms, and a picnic pavilion. Stump Pass Beach also offers accessible amenities including restrooms, parking, and free beach wheelchairs.

10. Pelican Beach

Pelican Beach, in the small town of Satellite Beach on Florida’s Space Coast, offers a quiet getaway. With a shaded green space adjacent to the beach, the picnic tables here are a perfect place to have a casual lunch by the sea. Chances are you won’t see a lot of people while you’re at this pretty, under-the-radar beach. The on-site bathrooms and showers are a bonus.

11. Sombrero Beach

Located between Key Largo and Key West, Sombrero Beach is a lovely, accessible beach right in the middle of the beautiful Florida Keys. While weekends can get crowded here, weekdays are usually fairly uncrowded. The calm, shallow waters make this a perfect beach for swimming and snorkeling, or for hanging out with your pup — dogs on leases are welcome!

Located right near Mile Marker 50, Sombrero Beach promises gorgeous views and aquamarine-colored seas. There are no concessions or beach equipment vendors, so bring your chair and umbrella as well as snacks for the best beach day. This is one of the best beaches in the Keys, with free parking, nice bathrooms, and a playground for the kids.

Pro Tip: Sombrero Beach is a turtle nesting beach. During active turtle nesting season (April through October), the city limits human activities in the vicinity of active turtle nest establishments, so parts of the beach may be closed. This is typically not more than 10 percent of the beach — the rest is open.

If you’ve been using Instagram for any period of time, you’ve probably seen one of photographer Gray Malin’s photographs. His bright, summery images—which include his signature aerial beach shots—have gained him more than half a million followers on that platform, and he’s collaborated with brands like Sperry, Supergoop sunscreen, Away luggage, Nest New York candles, Splendid, Illesteva sunglasses and Compartes chocolate.

Now, in his latest series, the California-based Malin has turned his eye to Florida’s Gulf Coast. It’s a natural fit: our turquoise waterways and white-sand beaches mirror his aesthetic, and he has ties to the area, too. “I loved seeing the Gasparilla Inn from above, since I grew up spending time there with my family during the holidays,” he says. “The memories came flooding back when I saw the patterned umbrellas from the air.”

Malin adds that over the years, his followers have requested photos of our region, too. “There are so many beautiful towns along the coast beloved by so many people,” he says. “I ended up with so many images from this shoot to add to my aerial collection.”

The series spans Tampa to Naples, and Malin’s photos of Sarasota-Manatee include Siesta Key Beach, Lido Beach, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key and Stump Pass.

Aside from visiting at Gasparilla Inn as a kid, Malin says he’d never spent much time on the Gulf Coast. “I was surprised at how many coastal towns there were to include,” he says. “I also felt this coast was very different from the East Coast of Florida—much more serene and relaxing.”

He adds that he hopes the images bring a sense of escapism and joy to people who see them, no matter where they live.

“Travel is such a special part of life,” he says. “I love how an image has the ability to transport you just by looking at it, which is really meaningful to me.”

You can purchase prints of Malin’s Florida Gulf Coast series at graymalin.com. Prints are signed by the artist and printed on premium archival luster paper. They’re available in small, medium and large sizes. Prices range from $249-$2,499.

Bird Key/Ringling Causeway is among three sites still testing beyond safe limits for enterococcus bacteria, the Florida Department of Health said.

Updated 4:25 p.m. July 29

Just in time for the weekend, no-swim advisories were dropped Friday afternoon for four of the seven beaches found earlier this week to have higher-than-acceptable levels of enterococcus bacteria, the Florida Department of Health said.

Popular Siesta Key Beach is now in the clear, the DOH said, along with three others farther south.

No-swim advisories remain in place at Brohard Beach, Venice fishing pier and Ringling Causeway/Bird Key Park.

A new round of testing will take place on Monday, Aug. 1.

Additionally, new no-swim advisories were posted in Manatee County for Coquina Beach North, Bayfront Park North, Manatee Public Beach North.

Published 12:05 p.m. July 28

No-swim advisories were posted Thursday for seven Sarasota County beaches after the discovery of enterococcus bacteria in levels higher than considered acceptable, the Florida Department of Health said.

The no-swim advisories were posted for:

The Florida Health Department said the beaches remain open, though wading, swimming or other water recreation is not recommended until water testing confirms levels have returned to acceptable concentrations.

No sewage spills have been reported. Enterococcus bacteria can additionally come from a variety of natural and human-made sources. These include pet waste, livestock, birds, land-dwelling and marine wildlife, and stormwater runoff.

Water testing was performed Thursday, with new results expected by Friday afternoon.

DOH-Sarasota Environmental Administrator Tom Higginbotham said in a statement that the Florida Healthy Beaches program protects beachgoers when conditions are unsuitable for swimming. This is done by testing beach water weekly and providing up-to-date explanations of the results.

“When these bacteria are found at high levels in recreational waters, there is a risk that some people may become ill," he said. "People, especially those who are very young, elderly or who have a weak immune system that swallow water while swimming can get stomach or intestinal illnesses. If water contacts a cut or sore, people can get infections or rashes."

Shellfish, such as crabs and shrimp, collected in the immediate area of any beach with a no-swim advisory in place should not be eaten. Finfish caught live and healthy can be eaten if filleted.

The island is home to one of the world’s most famous beaches, and plenty of great places to eat and party.

6641 Midnight Pass Road, Sarasota, (941) 554-8101, bigwaterfishmarket.com

The best spot to buy seafood on Siesta Key, Big Water carries a rotating selection of Gulf species, all of them picked out by owner Scott Dolan. If he won’t eat it, he won’t sell it, which means you can count on getting the freshest amberjack and mahi-mahi. While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to order one of the enormous grilled fish sandwiches whipped up in the back kitchen.

If you love wine, head here. Gabbiano offers an extensive selection of bottles and pours by the glass, all of them picked to pair well with the restaurant’s Italian pastas, meats and seafood. Enjoy dining in a wine room or take advantage of the outdoor seating on the climate-controlled patio. Or be spontaneous and order a meal to go for a Siesta Beach picnic.

153 Avenida Messina, Sarasota, (941) 312-9300, cottagesiestakey.com

A fun hangout with cocktails that will take the edge off after a hard day lying in the sun, The Cottage specializes in small plates meant to be shared. That means steamed mussels, ceviche and a raw tuna “taco” served inside a fried wonton shell. If you’re hungry for a fuller meal, you’ll also find a good pick of seafood entrées.

Flavio’s

5239 Ocean Blvd., Sarasota, (941) 349-0995, flaviosbrickovenandbar.com

Flavio’s is known for its romantic environs, quality pastas, Italian entrées and, of course, its pizza, cooked in a brick oven that gets hotter than a summer afternoon on the beach. The ingredients here skew mostly traditional Italian, although you will find a Hawaiian pizza, too.

Miguel’s

6631 Midnight Pass Road, Sarasota, (941) 349-4024, miguelsrestaurant.net

A staple of the island since 1983, Miguel’s serves established French classics like sole meunière, chicken cordon bleu and Chateaubriand. Save room for dessert. The restaurant’s selection runs deeper than most restaurants, with several that are prepared tableside.

In the first scene of the first episode of the MTV reality show Siesta Key, we met our main protagonist, Alex, while on a date at Ophelia’s. We don’t remember how that evening concluded, but we can’t fault Alex for his choice of a restaurant, because Ophelia’s is one of the most romantic eateries imaginable, particularly when the weather is at its nicest and you can sit on the deck. The menu is heavy on fine dining standards like caramelized scallops, roasted fish and rack of lamb, all of it just as intoxicating as the glimmering waters of the Intracoastal.

1265 Old Stickney Point Road, Sarasota, (941) 349-1970, spearfishgrille.com

Tucked into a small space at Siesta Key Marina, Spearfish is a no-frills shack where your server can fetch you an estimate on your boat repairs and serve up a mean grouper sandwich, too. The shop sells fish and shellfish straight from the Gulf, with an emphasis on hogfish, blue crabs and shrimp. Spearfish is a pleasant pit stop before or after a day on the water, but it’s also a great spot to hit up on your lunch break to remind yourself why living near the Gulf is so great.

This is the island sushi destination of your dreams, with a huge list of rolls that covers the basics and offers plenty of creative blends and chef specialties, as well. It’s styled like a Japanese izakaya—part bar, part restaurant, with dim lighting, stiff drinks and plates made for sharing. If you’re with a group, consider ordering a giant sushi ship laden with rolls and decorated with a blazing sparkler that will light up your life.

Summer House’s name nods to Summerhouse, a long-gone Siesta Key restaurant institution, but chef Evan Gastman’s food stands on its own. His roasted chicken has been a staple of the menu since it opened in 2018 and is already famous. Using his grandmother’s recipe as a model, Gastman adds a high-tech twist by cooking the half-chicken in a sous vide and then torching the skin until it’s golden-brown all over. Anyone who can breathe new life into roasted chicken is a saint. The steaks are terrific, too.

210 Avenida Madera, Sarasota, (941) 346-7170, sungardencafe.com

This Siesta Key mainstay attracts both sun-blasted tourists and mainlanders making the trek out to the beach, offering a mix of egg-based standards, plus more unusual dishes like their iconic sweet potato pancakes—so smooth, so sweet, so fluffy that they can singlehandedly turn your week around. Waffles made with batter dotted with pecans and bacon are another fave. Outside, striped awnings protect customers from the sun on a wide stone patio bright with tropical flowers and an occasional visiting songbird. This may just be Siesta’s best place to wake up.
