Winning back-to-back games en route to an NCHSAA 4A state championship on Saturday wasn’t easy, but head coach Adam Renzi knows his group of girls, and he knows they are a resilient bunch.
“We’ve been gritty all year,” Renzi said after Apex rallied, twice, to upset Hickory Ridge at Duke University. “We don’t have a lot of superstars but just play really tough. And so today we just said, ‘Don’t let us win one.’”
Apex was shut out in Game 1, 3-0, on Friday night as Hickory Ridge got a brilliant performance from Elon-bound pitcher Anna Dew. To win the title, Apex had to win the final two games of the best-of-3 series Saturday.
In Game 2, the Cougars found themselves in a 4-0 hole, and came back. That was their “one,” thanks to a two-run walk-off homer from Kaleigh Ayscue.
From there, Renzi said, it was all about using the energy off the win.
“We managed to get that one,” Renzi said. “That first one was really hard. It was really hot. I thought we were able to really build off that.”
In Game 3, the Cougars got behind again, and trailed 5-2 in the seventh inning, three outs from disaster. But, aided by three Hickory Ridge errors, Apex scored six runs to win 8-5, securing its first softball state title.
“That’s been the story all year,” Renzi said. “We are just gritty and find ways to manufacture runs.”
Renzi said a few years ago, winning double digit games at Apex was a big deal. Now, the Cougars will get fitted for rings.
“I’ve been around softball for so long, travel ball, college and high school,” Renzi said. “The resiliency of the female athlete (is special). They just do not surrender. What you saw today is why I’m involved in this game. Whether we win or lose is irrelevant because of the way they fought back.”
Hickory Ridge head coach Justin Davies said all his team could do is look ahead.
“We don’t have any choice but to move forward,” Davies said. “We try to tell the girls to not worry about the next step and the next pitch, but this hurts. We had four errors (in Game 3) and a bunch of errors in (Game 2) and we just didn’t do the job.”

Tell us why you’re running to serve Apex. Why should voters trust you in this position?
Apex has been on a good track for the past five to six years. Although residents rightfully express concern over the rate of growth, traffic conditions and loss of natural resources, it is important to recognize that policies set by the Council often take years to become ‘visible.’ For example, many development projects were approved before more stringent zoning conditions became effective and, therefore, do not need to meet these new standards. Policy changes consistent with resident feedback and concerns that have been implemented in recent years will become more apparent over time. I have chosen to serve the town to protect and continue this progress. More importantly, the town is facing significant challenges in the areas of affordable housing, transit, and engagement from minority populations. I believe I bring qualifications to the Town Council that will help address these challenges and ensure that Apex remains an attractive place to live, work, and play.
What is the town of Apex doing right to manage growth? What could be improved?
The growth of Apex is both a benefit and a concern. The benefit is that the town has a larger tax base and, therefore can afford more projects to serve residents, e.g., new parks, road improvements, new public safety stations, and staff. The downside of growth is stress on existing infrastructure (roads, water, sewer, electric) and loss of natural resources.
What Apex is doing well is throttling residential growth, applying more stringent zoning conditions to preserve natural resources, and promoting commercial development. Slowing growth will allow the town, along with state entities, to invest and catch up on infrastructure projects. Additionally, new zoning regulation drives growth in areas of town where that is more desirable and creates a better mix of home inventory. Additionally, the town is investing in public transit.
Housing affordability, traffic conditions, and maintaining the natural beauty of Apex are to be improved.
If elected, how would you approach an existing or new issue differently from your fellow council members?
Where I plan to make a difference is in the area of transit. To reduce car traffic we need to apply a multi-pronged approach. Having grown up in Europe, I have experience with road designs and public transit concepts that are scarcely applied in the USA. Recently I have worked with a Dutch engineering firm and NC Department of Transportation (DOT) to explore the “Turbo Roundabout” concept. We can increase the capacity of existing roads by replacing intersections with these roundabouts. DOT is now gathering data from implementations in Europe to assess feasibility and application in North Carolina, including Apex.
Additionally, I have views on road designs that create a more pedestrian- and bike-friendly environment, in particular separated (protected) bike lanes.
Lastly, to be effective in managing traffic, we need to get serious about public transit. A connected network of transit services will increase its usability and popularity.
How do you plan to make local government in Apex more inclusive and equitable for all residents in the town who feel their voices are underrepresented?
The growth of Apex has resulted in a more diverse population. The Council and town staff are implementing several key programs to ensure we can engage all residents.
I look forward to helping our DE&I Director implement engagement programs like resource groups for employees who identify with an underrepresented community or our language access plan that will help engage residents for whom English is not their first language.
Additionally, we recently onboarded a director for Community Development. This is an external-facing function that aims to engage with communities and neighborhoods more pro-actively.
Despite these efforts, not all residents feel their voice is heard. As a council member, I spend a lot of my time in the community interacting with residents. One community I am working to personally engage is the AAPI community. This community represents 15% of Apex’s population but has virtually no representation on boards, committees or Town Council.

A franchise restaurant in the Triangle is getting an overhaul from a local team.
The Glory Days Grill location in Apex has closed – but the spot will soon reopen as a new concept. Mike Montgomery, owner of the Abbey Road Tavern brand, has purchased the business with plans to turn it into The Dugout Tavern & Grill.
The restaurant is located at 1413 Kelly Road in the Publix Pointe shopping center. A trio of local franchisees opened the spot as Glory Days Grill in 2017. The sports bar and grill brand was started in Virginia and now has 39 locations, according to its website.
With the closing of the Apex location, North Carolina has no Glory Days Grill restaurants.
The new concept taking its place will have a sports focus, Montgomery said. The menu will feature American fare, including burgers, wraps, pizza, steak, salads and salmon. Items will range from about $8 to $20.
The Dugout Tavern & Grill’s bar will serve cocktails, wine and beer. The restaurant measures about 5,500 square feet and will have seating for 200 inside and another 60 seats outside in a covered patio area.
The space will feature 39 TVs with “every sports package available,” Montgomery said. The décor will be focused on sports as well, with memorabilia from various sports and local teams throughout. The restaurant will also have pool tables, darts and a shuffleboard table.
Montgomery declined to disclose the purchase price.
He bought the business from operators Christopher Holmes, his father Doug Holmes and uncle Warren Holmes. Prior to its closure, the restaurant had been struggling with internal management, Montgomery said.
Glory Days Grill did not appear to announce the closure in any social media posts, but the former restaurant’s Facebook page now lists it as permanently closed. The page commented back to a customer on one of its posts saying, “We have been fortunate to have good people working here, just not enough to be open the seven days a week we were designed for.”
Montgomery is hoping to open The Dugout Tavern & Grill the week of Aug. 7. He is in the process of cleaning all the kitchen equipment and renovating the space.
The restaurant will be open until midnight seven days a week, 365 days a year, he said, and will employ 40 to 50 people.
Montgomery owns two other restaurants, both under his Abbey Road Tavern brand – one in Apex at 1700 Center St. and one in Cary at 1195 W. Chatham St. The brand has a music and rock ‘n’ roll focus.
Montgomery has owned several other restaurants in the past and is looking to expand his business with more restaurants in the future.

Al Williams and Matt Winter of JLL are handling leasing for Apex Gateway’s speculative developments. The project team also includes general contractor The Conlan Co., architect HagerSmith Design and engineer Advanced Civil Design. Truist Bank is providing construction financing.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. AND RICHMOND, VA. — Hoffman & Associates plans to expand into two new markets, Charlotte and Richmond, with the development of three new multifamily projects totaling 1,108 apartments. The developments, which will exceed 1 million square feet in size and $433 million in total investment, will include two assets in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood and a $133 million development in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood of Richmond.
The Washington, D.C. -based developer plans to break ground on 2500 Distribution Street in Charlotte (330 apartments) in spring 2024 and deliver the project in fall 2026. Down the street, Hoffman plans to begin construction on 2401 Distribution Street (410 apartments) in spring 2025 and wrap up construction in summer 2027. Lastly, 3200 W Moore Street in Richmond (368 apartments) will break ground in late 2024 and deliver in late 2026.
NASHVILLE, TENN. — Albion Residential has purchased land in Nashville with plans to build Albion Music Row, a two-tower luxury apartment project totaling 850 units.
The first tower will rise 29 stories and 350 feet. Albion plans to begin construction prior to the end of the year on the 458-unit building, followed by the second tower, which will feature 392 units and rise 20 stories.
Both buildings will offer retail and restaurant spaces on the ground floors. The centerpiece of the development will be a public green space that will feature art, a performance stage and a lawn designed for music uses. Albion Music Row will also feature an active recording studio.
Albion Music Row will offer micro units at a lower price point in addition to studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans. There will also be duplex units.
The site comprises five lots located at the southwest corner of the intersection of McGavock Street and 14th Avenue. Albion paid $31 million for the property.
The project team includes Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, civil engineer Barge Cauthen & Associates, landscape architect Hodgson Douglas, structural engineer SDL and MEP engineer I.C. Thomasson.
Albion Residential is pursuing a LEED Silver designation for the property, which marks the developer’s second large-scale project in Nashville’s urban core. The company recently opened Albion in the Gulch, a $140 million project with 415 units.
Based in Oak Brook, Illinois, Albion Residential is focused on the acquisition, development and operation of urban, luxury apartments.
