But there’s a different kind of Joey setting up shop in SoFlo.
JOEY Aventura is a brand-new, two-story restaurant next to Aventura Mall, and it comes all the way from our neighbors to the north.
Matthew Stowe: “As a Canadian concept starting in Vancouver, it’s just really exciting being able to come to Miami. It’s somewhere we’ve always wanted to be.”
This is the 32nd JOEY restaurant in the world, but the first in the Sunshine State.
Matthew Stowe: “I think South Florida is the perfect fit for JOEY, just with our globally inspired menu. We’ve got something for everyone; we kinda touch all bases of cuisine.”
He’s not kidding! This place has it all, from seafood and steak to pasta and hummus.
Matthew Stowe: “We’ve got some really great food, I think, for the area that compliments the temperature outside and just the culture.”
One of JOEY’s signature menu items is the Torched Salmon Sushi.
Matthew Stowe: “Umami mayo on the top, fresh salmon, really well seasoned seasoned sushi rice. You caramelize that mayo, it’s just – it’s one of my favorite menu items.”

Matthew Stowe: “We did our Ravioli Bianco with our black truffle butter sauce, truffle ravioli filling, some fresh prawns on top, garnished with a little bit of crispy onions. When I think of that dish, I think of Miami. It’s luxurious, it’s rich, it has amazing seafood, all kind of tied into one.”

Joey Restaurants, the popular Canadian-based dining group, is opening its first Sunshine State location here in South Florida, with the grand opening of Joey Aventura, a sprawling casual chain with restaurants throughout Canada and the United States, including Washington, California, and Texas.
Joey’s wide-ranging menu pays homage to global flavors: roasted corn guacamole, hummus paired with tzatziki, dill, olives, and crispy pita; seared salmon sushi, and sake-glazed Chilean sea bass. Its popular steak dish, a customer favorite served with crispy mashed potatoes, also makes the Miami menu. For those who crave Italian, items like ravioli bianco, chicken parmesan, and spaghetti pomodoro are available. The menu is overseen by Joey’s team of chefs consisting of a three-time James Beard House guest chef, an Iron Chef from Japan, a Bocuse d’Or veteran competitor, and Top Chef Canada winner Matthew Stowe, who serves as executive chef of all Joey Restaurants.
The bar offers a full menu with drinks like the Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita with serrano pepper-infused tequila and a sweet Real Peach Bellini that blends rum, peach molasses, sparkling wine, and Sangria. Guests can also enjoy the Joey Supers, a blend of lemon and lime slush, adding a twist to the classic highball.
Located in the Esplanade at Aventura, the restaurant spans two levels and covers 8,300 square feet of interior space plus a 1,250 square-foot patio; and is designed with Miami in mind. The 241-seat dining room boasts a circular bar, floor-to-ceiling windows, and art installations from artists Elsbeth Shaw and Anna Kincaide. The main dining room features an 82-seat outdoor patio aptly equipped with fans and a retractable awning.

Joey, a brand created in Canada that serves what it calls “globally inspired cuisine,” is opening its first Florida location next to the growing Aventura Mall. There are already Joey locations in Washington, California and Texas.
The new, two-level restaurant will be part of the new Esplanade development next to the south side of the mall. The 215,000-square-foot open-air area will be home to stores, restaurants and work spaces.
Layne Krienke, president of the Joey Restaurant Group, said that Miami’s vibrant nature makes it a great spot for Florida’s first Joey location.
“Miami is the epicenter of culture, and we can’t wait to bring our diverse, globally inspired menu, paired with our immense love of hospitality, to the city’s renowned restaurant scene,” he said in a statement.
The new Joey, which exists in a standalone building and isn’t part of the mall, boasts 8,300 square feet with a 1,250 square foot patio with space for 82 guests. A circular bar is the focal point of the dining room, which seats 241 and has floor to ceiling windows (all the better to see the rest of the Esplanade).
The design of the new restaurant is specific to the Miami location, with colorful works from artists Elsbeth Shaw and Anna Kincaide throughout the room (Shaw’s works, called “Miami Love Versace,” are inspired by Miami).
The menu, from “Top Chef Canada” winner Matthew Stowe, Joey’s executive chef, features a variety of cuisines from sushi to steak; you’ll also find burgers, sandwiches and bowls. Some of the restaurant’s signature dishes are roasted corn guacamole; hummus with tzatziki, dill, olives and pita; seared salmon; sake-glazed Chilean sea bass and Italian favorites like chicken parm and ravioli bianco.
You’ll also find a bar menu with spicy passion fruit margaritas, real peach Bellinis and sangria, plus the Joey Supers, a variation of a classic highball with lemon and lime slush.
Joey isn’t the only new restaurant opening in the area. The Aventura Mall, which is also home to Tap 42, Pubbelly Sushi and Motek Israeli restaurant, which won Burger Bash at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival two years in a row, has a new tenant: Toku Asian restaurant from Long Island, which opened near the Nordstrom entrance.

In Aventura, a city plan to uproot a community garden for new pickleball courts is running into opposition from some residents.
The new pickleball and tennis courts would be located at the southern portion of Founders Park.
“This is the only green space in Aventura where residents can come and exist within nature,” Aventura resident Alice Bondicini said.
The plan is spurring passive park use advocates, who say they want to keep Founders Park from being paved over.
“(It) would destroy such a beautiful park, (it) comforts so many local residents,” resident Xiu Wang said.
Noise concerns have led to pickleball battles in communities in Florida and elsewhere.
Players acknowledge it can sometimes be a bit of a racket.
“You have to be careful,” Fort Lauderdale pickleball player Jonathan Chong said. “You can’t be too close to the houses, because the sound is loud and it does affect people’s homes.”
Bondicini says while, yes, she’s worried the game’s distinct noise will be at friction with the inherent serenity of gardening and could be a disturbance to those living at nearby condominiums and apartments, it’s not her primary concern.
“None of us are against pickleball, why would we be?” Bondicini said. “We just think this is not the place.”
The Fort Lauderdale pickleball enthusiasts weighed in on the idea of converting green space to courts.
“(It’s) not to take over the entire park with just asphalt and courts,” Chong said.
“It just has to have a good balance, it is never one or another,” Hirsch said.
“As a city of only 3.28 square miles, Aventura is continuously challenged with finding a balance between green spaces and recreational facilities. Our new pickleball and tennis courts will provide recreational space to benefit the entire Aventura community,” city of Aventura spokesperson Evan Ross said in a statement. “The community garden will remain within Founders Park South, and the waterfront walkway will remain accessible for all residents to enjoy.”
The issue is set to go before the full city commission in April.
