BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. —
Three key redevelopment projects in Boynton Beach are expected to bring 315 new affordable and workforce housing units to the city within the next three years.
The units will be available to very low to moderate-income families.

The city utilized local, county, state and private dollars to get the ball rolling on the projects which officials say will bring not just housing, but ample commercial space and opportunities to the community as well.
The projects will bring 465 housing units in total to Downtown Boynton Beach — 315 of those will be affordable and workforce housing.
Construction is well underway at the Heart of Boynton Village Apartments and Shops on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
“We want to make sure that all people are able to live and have affordable and decent respectable housing that we can be proud of,” Boynton Beach Mayor Ty Penserga said. “Whether it's our retail workers or restaurant workers, or teachers or nurses, so we've got something for everybody.”
Martin County Commission opposes new affordable housing bill
Penserga said the mixed-use complex, which broke ground last year, will have 124 affordable housing units and an additional 8,000 square feet of commercial space for local, small businesses.
It’s one of three affordable housing projects planned by the Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency including a district with single-family homes called the Cottage District.

“There will be 41 for sale units, a combination of single-family homes and townhomes. More specifically 19 single-family homes and 22 townhomes. The maximum price will be about $245,000 for a three-bedroom,” Penserga said.
There are also plans for another mixed-use space called The Pierce on Federal Highway.
“I'm floating right now. Because it's been over 20 years since we've had this type of development in district two, so I had to put rocks in my pocket to hold me down,” Woodrow Hay, a city commissioner representing District 2, said.
Hay said housing is the number one issue that comes up in conversations with his constituents and he’s glad to be seeing more progress.
“There were some ups, there were some downs. But through it all at the end of the day, look what we have here. A project that’s going to be around for decades and decades and decades to come for our citizens to enjoy,” Hay said.
The Heart of Boynton Village Apartments and Shops are expected to be completed in May of 2023 and applications are being accepted right now.
Officials plan to break ground on other two housing projects in 2024.

CBS12 News learned they're considering giving themselves a hefty pay raise for Fiscal Year 2024, which doesn't sit well with some residents.

At a budget workshop July 13 some residents said no way.
"I want you to know we do not consent to this budget at all. This is highway robbery" said Cindy Falco, Boynton Beach resident.
Some residents in Boynton Beach are getting really upset over the potential pay increase for city commissioners.
"This is just beyond comprehension! It's unacceptable" Falco exclaimed.
"I can tell you this is making people madder than a hound dog with a head cold," said David Katz, a former Boynton Beach City commissioner.
One by one, they voiced their anger and concern about increases in the proposed city budget for Fiscal Year 2024 that would give each city commissioner about $36,000 more per year.
Their annual salary of about $23,000 would stay the same.
But the proposed budget---for the first time---would give city commissioners a $51,000 car allowance, an office stipend of about $71,000 a year and a clothing allowance of $17,500 a year – all of which they would split five ways.
"When I went to work I paid for my own clothes. I don't understand why you're getting a clothing allowance," Falco said.
"Nobody gets a pay raise of $36,400, and they sure as heck don't need it," Katz told CBS12 News.
Katz, who served on the city commission from March 1993 to March 1995, says he believes taxpayers have a right to be upset.
"This is a part-time job that they've chosen to run for. They've gotten elected. This is public service. This is not something to ingratiate themselves and line their pockets with. There's no need for it," he said.
But at the July 13 budget workshop, one man said city commissioners are not paid enough.
"We as citizens should band together if necessary to vote to increase the salaries of our hard-working commissioners and mayor. Let's work to increase their salaries they are so deserving of," he said.
We reached out to all the Boynton Beach city commissioners and the mayor. None returned a call seeking comment.
The city commission still has to vote to approve the city budget. CBS12 News asked the city for the date when that vote will take place have yet to hear back.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay outof the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Youngchildren and pets should never be left unattended in vehiclesunder any circumstances.
