Among the iconic images that bring joy to the summer are hot dogs on the grill, hot dogs at the ballpark, and hot dogs at the summer street fairs. With all the hot dog stands that dot the American landscape, there are few places in all of America that are as iconic as Hot Dog Johnny’s in Buttzville, New Jersey. Located on Route 46 along the Pequest River, Hot Dog Johnny’s has been a part of New Jersey’s history for the last 77 years. Hot Dog Johnny's is one of a kind. There is no other stand, no franchise, no Hot Dog Johnny's Two. Just the one and only stand nestled along the Pequest River in Buttzville. On any given afternoon, particularly in the summer, the parking lot of this historic restaurant is packed with cars, trucks, buses, and particularly motorcycles. It is not unusual on a warm summer afternoon to see lines 20 persons long for each of the four windows serving customers. The Hot Dogs are served the way they’ve always been served, fried in peanut oil along with French fries, (in my opinion are one of the best anywhere) shakes, and of course their famous cold frosty mugs of Birch Beer or Buttermilk.
This last year’s pandemic forced the stand to close only two days keeping alive the work ethic instilled by the founder but with no glass mugs of birch beer, (only served in take-out cups). However, their frosty glass mugs will return when this pandemic is finally far behind us.
Hot Dog Johnny’s is family owned, one of a kind, and has been continuously operated since 1944. Founder John Kovalsky started Hot Dog Johnny’s with his wife Louise in 1944 opening on Palm Sunday with a small shack sharing space with a gas station at the intersection of Route 46 and Route 31. Kovalsky worked in the Dover mines during the day and operated the stand at night serving travelers along the Route 46 corridor long before Rt. 80 was even on the map. The stand quickly outgrew the small shack (which can still be found on the property) and Kovalsky bought the property along the Pequest River on Rt. 46 where it still stands to this day.
There are no real overnight success stories in America in spite of the myths and Hot Dog Johnny’s is no exception. John Kovalsky believed in hard work, and it is the ethic that still runs through the iconic roadside stand to this day. Hot Dog Johnny’s founder John Kovalsky's daughter, Patricia Fotopoulos, can be found everyday standing behind the windows proudly handing out the "Best Hot Dog’s ever, to the most loyal customers ever.” Patricia, who has been involved with the business since it opened in 1944, started at 8 years of age standing on Coca-Cola crates opening bottles and handing out sodas. Today, as the restaurant approaches 80 years in business, she still calls it “a labor of love.”
There is no place this reporter hasn’t been where someone didn’t know about Hot Dog Johnny’s. I saw a man in Amsterdam wearing a Hot Dog Johnny’s tee shirt. A business associate in Dubai who found out I was from New Jersey asked me if I knew of Hot Dog Johnny’s. From Canada to Mexico, and from California to Maine, Hot Dog Johnny’s has garnered a reputation as one of the best places for that purely quintessential American Hot Dog. Ms. Erin Amato and Ms. Casey Eck along with Connor Eck, Mackensie Eck, Cameron Eck, Madelyn Amato, and Ryan Hoffman (featured in the photo) are just some of the patrons who enjoy a visit to Hot Dog Johnny’s passing on the legacy they will hopefully continue to pass down. As their website states, “the testimonies of customers over the years prove Hot Dog Johnny’s visions were on target as they tell stories of coming to Hot Dog Johnny’s as kids with their parents and now come as parents themselves with their own children.” Hot Dog Johnny’s is a place for family and friends. It is a fun place for kids of all ages who wish to “ride on the swings,” have your meal at the tables on the patio or on the grass by the river. A visit to the 77-year-old Hot Dog Johhny’s stand is sure to be an experience for you, your friends, and your family for years to come.

All are invited to join the Buttzville United Methodist Church community as it celebrates 175 years of spreading the love of Jesus Christ by conducting a full day of activities inspired to "Change the World" on Saturday, May 9.
Change the World is a worldwide United Methodist effort to connect with the community to make a difference locally and globally. Included in the event will be the planting of a vegetable garden, a blood drive, barbeque, game night for middle schoolers, and a LAN party for young adults overnight.
"We praise God and all those who have come before us as we celebrate 175 years in ministry," said Scott C. Maat, the church's pastor. "We are but a link in a long chain of generations that have devoted themselves to the mission of Christ through the Buttzville Church," Pastor Maat said, adding, "We can think of no better way of celebrating our past than by looking forward."
The event kicks off at 10 a.m., with the gardening activity, followed by a free barbecue luncheon that will continue throughout the afternoon. Adding to the festivities will be live music provided by The Crossing, comprised of Andrew Gallagher and Tina Bradshaw. Vintage photos and artifacts signifying the church's long history in the community will be on display. The Miller-Keystone mobile blood center will be open from noon-4 p.m. Appointments may be made ahead of time online at https://donor.giveapint.org/ or just stop by.
Now in its fourth year, the garden's harvest will be donated to local food pantries throughout the summer and fall. In years past the garden yielded a variety of nutritious vegetables, including bumper crops of cucumbers, beets, lettuce, tomatoes and green beans. Also produced were melons, peppers, radishes, spinach, squash, and of course zucchini.
"The majority of the food we are able to give our clients is canned or packaged so the fresh produce we receive from the Buttzville UMC garden is very much appreciated," said Carolann Ficarra, coordinator of the Belvidere Area Emergency Food Pantry operated by Belvidere United Methodist Church. "Clients always comment on how much they enjoy it," Ficarra said, adding that the organization was working hard to obtain more local produce from other sources.
"Gardens produce much more than vegetables," said Pastor Maat. "Community gardens foster relationships and engender pride that comes with providing sustenance for others," he continued, "Each seed and small plant will grow into food; organic food that is awfully hard to come by at our local food pantries."
Middle school aged youth are encouraged to join in a game night in the church's lower level from 4-7 p.m. A light dinner and snacks will be provided; adult supervision will be on site.
Later, from 9 p.m., on Saturday through 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 10, the church will host its third annual LAN Party for young adults ages 17 and older. A LAN (local area network) Party is an activity that brings a group together to compete in multiplayer video games. This event is being coordinated by individuals affiliated with the church ranging in age from late teens to early twenties. The activity is free and refreshments will be provided.
"Come and join us as we set the ministries and missions for the next 175 years of service by following the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus," said Pastor Maat. "Come as you are; all are welcome," he said.

Garden participants are advised to come prepared with gloves, a hat and garden tools. Bottled water will be provided. Financial support of the project will also be accepted, as well as non-perishable items for the food pantries. And there is an open invitation to local passersby to help maintain the garden throughout the summer.
Another way to help Change the World is to drop off useable clothing, bedding, footwear, purses, curtains and stuffed toys in plastic bags to be sent to those in need - in the U.S. and in third world countries. Donations will not be cut up or shredded. No rags, scraps, or household items. The drop-off shed is located along rear driveway by the cemetery and remains there all year.

WHITE TWP. — Buttzville United Methodist Church, located at 4 Green Pond Road, is pleased to announce the appointment of Scott Charles Maat as its new pastor. The community is invited to join the congregation in welcoming Maat to the area for his inaugural service as pastor 10 a.m. on July 10. A luncheon will be held following the service.
“God has called me to be a Licensed Local Pastor and that is the route I am following,” said Maat, a self-employed cabinet maker who resides in Lafayette with his wife of 25 years, Diane. The couple has three sons: Daniel, 22; Andrew, 19; and Joshua, 17; as well as an Australian Shepherd named Breezy.
Maat, 45, is a Certified Lay Speaker whose background in ministry includes leading a Men’s Bible Study group; co-hosting with his wife a Christian Accountability group; and being involved in Food Pantry and Free Community Dinners, Interfaith Hospital Network, Appalachian Service Project, Christian Outreach Project (COP), Disciple Bible Study, and choir.
In addition to his spiritual leadership, Maat is an active member of his community. He has served as a volunteer firefighter in the Lafayette Fire Department for 19 years and co-leads the junior firefighter program there. He is Assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 850, where his two older sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and his youngest is currently working on his Eagle as well. Maat enjoys sailing, camping, and learning to play guitar.
“Life experiences, the grace of God and the help of others have prepared me for this role,” said Maat, adding that the opportunity to preach the Good News of Christ as a Certified Lay Speaker has been both a privilege and an invaluable experience.
“We are all created by God on purpose for a purpose; all callings are important to Christ,” Maat said. About two years ago, he felt that there was a small congregation out there somewhere that the Lord was calling him to lead. It turns out that small congregation was Buttzville United Methodist Church.
“It is with joyful hearts that we welcome Scott Maat as our new Pastor,” said Cara Quick, who chairs the church’s Staff Parish Relations Committee and serves as Lay Speaking Director for the Skylands District. “The parishioners of Buttzville UMC are excited to grow with him and work with him to continue our missions, both locally and globally.”

What is abundantly clear is that it would not be a Jersey food staple without some debate. Three North Jersey hot dog joints have been dishing out fried wieners for a combined 245 years, and each of the three has its die-hard customers.
The name “Texas Wiener” actually originates in New Jersey. In the 1920s, a Paterson man ran a hot dog stand and coined the name to describe his chili-sauce-smothered dogs. Over the last century, New Jersey has been the destination for America’s best frankfurters. This is a story of three deep-fried hot dogs— no matter what you call them.
The Hot Grill in Clifton, NJ, opened its doors on Friday The 13th, 1961. This makes it the youngest in the arena, but still, for 61 years, Hot Grill has been dishing out fried Texas wieners to their devout customers.
What puts Hot Grill on the map is their house-made chili sauce. The rich, mahogany-colored beef chili is ladled atop hundreds of hot dogs each day. It is kind of an obscure sauce, to be honest. Slightly thinner than your average chili, making it too loose to eat with a spoon, but perfect as a condiment. The go-to order at Hot Grill is a dog “all the way,” which provides you with a deep-fried pork and beef frankfurter, topped with mustard, chopped raw onions and the famous chili sauce— no additional charge.
Thin, fast-food style burgers (in the best way), fries smothered in cheese and brown gravy and hot roast beef sandwiches are some of the other beloved items on the menu.
For too long, I was a Hot Grill hater. I pledged loyalty to another Clifton spot and never looked back. However, since opening my eyes, I have found a love for The Hot Grill; it brings something unique to the table with their top secret chili sauce and an atmosphere akin to a portal into 1960s America. The wooden booths, the painted caricatures of their hot dog mascot on the walls, it all works together to make Hot Grill a special place.
The Hot Grill in Clifton is in their sixth decade of patronage and the original owners remain active with the business. It is exemplary of a working class lunch spot; studded with fair prices and consistency.
Not to mention their legendary commercials, which appeared on North Jersey TV’s for years.
Long live Anthony Bourdain— who was such a big fan of Hiram’s in Fort Lee that he included it in his New Jersey episode of Parts Unknown on CNN.
“I come here to feed my soul from the cultural wellspring that is New Jersey. It’s the antidote to every other place,” Bourdain said about Hiram’s Roadstand.
Since 1932, Hiram’s has been serving fried dogs, crushable burgers and cold, inexpensive beers. It is sort of a perfect establishment— a relic of a time long lost (which seems to be a common theme among this type of fare). The roadside gem has an insanely simple menu: fried Thuman’s beef and pork dogs, burgers, grilled cheese and onion rings are some of the options to be had.
Bright green relish, spicy brown mustard, raw or cooked onions and sauerkraut make up the list of ways to top your dog or burger. Of course, chili and cheese can be added to either as well. There isn’t one particular way to chow down on a Hiram’s hot dog, and that is what makes it so beautiful.
There are a few tables squished into the tiny interior of Hiram’s Roadstand, but as the name suggests, it is just that: a roadstand. Instead, if the weather permits it, most guests choose to take their cardboard boxes of hot dogs and burgers outside to the wooden picnic tables. To me, that’s just how Hiram’s should be eaten.
Hiram’s Roadstand refuses to change. For the 90 years that Hiram’s has been in business, Fort Lee has developed into a busy city rich with Korean food, tall buildings, lush parks and views of the George Washington Bridge, but Hiram’s sits comfortably in the past. Bourdain put it best when praising Hiram’s: “There’s not a lot of people in this world courageous enough to not change,” he proudly stated. As usual, he was right.
Rutt’s Hut is a place I hold near and dear to my heart. For the 24 (and a half) years I have been on this planet, I have been eating Rutt’s dogs— colloquially known as Rippers— for as long as I can remember. My grandparents took my parents here when they were kids and, like clockwork, it was passed down to me.
This cash-only joint is famous for their rippers, a mysteriously good relish, burgers dipped in brown gravy, onion rings and even roast duck. The menu is so large that I have probably only had less than fifteen percent of it. That’s okay, because you’re here to read about the hot dogs.
First things first, never ask for a chili dog. They simply won’t do it. You can order a dog and a cup of chili separately to combine yourself, but ordering them as one is taboo. I’m not sure why, but I suspect it has to do with chili dogs being a Hot Grill thing. The Clifton rivalry is strong.
A ripper with relish or mustard is a thing of magic. It was even named the best hot dog in America. Like Hiram’s, Thuman’s beef and pork frankfurters are fried in oil. However, unlike the former, they are fried until the casing cracks— hence the nickname. At one time, the dogs were fried in beef tallow, but has since switched over to standard fryer oil. There are a few ways to order a hot dog at Rutt’s, so it is important to familiarize yourself with the lingo before making the trip.
The relish is as famous as the rippers. A German style cabbage condiment is flavored with mustard, pickling salt, among other things. There are copy-cat recipes you can find online, but nothing compares to spooning it out of the metal vats that sit atop the counter directly onto a piping hot ripper or weller.
Rutt’s has three places to dine: A dimly lit dining room complete with decor from at least 5 decades ago. A legendary bar with taps pouring cold Miller High Life and Beck’s into frosty mugs. And finally, the most iconic of them all, the standing counter room; where people gather on their lunch breaks or with their families to hear the yells of the kitchen and quickly scarf down a ripper or two.
Hot dogs are historically entrenched in New Jersey food culture. It is a niche that has had many different purveyors over the years. In addition to the three mentioned, there are legendary hot dog joints that have since closed their doors that are worth noting.
Libby’s Lunch opened in Paterson in 1936 by a former hot dog street vendor. Libby’s was one of the first free standing spots to score a Texas wiener in Paterson and it spawned many copy cats throughout the decades. At its simplest, it was a comforting setting for locals to enjoy a remarkably consistent product. Sadly, Libby’s closed in 2020— shutting the doors after 84 years of business.
Falls View Grill had several locations over the years, but was originally operated out of Paterson. Opened in 1949 by a former Libby’s Lunch employee, Falls View Grill spread the legend of the Paterson hot dog far and wide. Texas wieners were a must here— along with gravy fries, burgers, Greek specialties and milkshakes. Today, zero locations remain in operation, but Falls View has permanently etched its spot in NJ history books.
