MENDHAM/CHESTER, NJ — Independence Day is quickly approaching, which means it's time to fire up that barbecue and find out what Fourth of July fireworks and festivities are going on in and around Mendham and Chester for 2023.
We gathered up all the fireworks shows, parades and festivals happening in and around the area so you can start planning now.
Here's what's in store this July 4 in and around Mendham and Chester:
At 11 a.m. there will be a lunch at the Community Field Club, provided by the Mendham Rotary Club, Mendham Creamery and Brookside Engine Company.
At the end of the parade route, there will be a community celebration with activities for the entire family. Planned activities include a dunk tank, a pie eating contest and fun field games.
Morristown National Historical Park:
Morristown National Historical Park and the Washington Association of New Jersey will celebrate the park's 90th anniversary and Independence Week with a variety of programs from July 4 to 9, all at the park's Washington Headquarters.
Celebrate the Declaration of Independence with July Fourth activities beginning at noon on July 4 at the park's Washington's Headquarters grounds with a "Warm-Up for the Declaration" featuring eighteenth-century stories, jokes, and riddles, followed by the Declaration's reading at 1 p.m. on the grounds of the Washington’s Headquarters Museum.

Residents around and visitors to the state's largest lake, like to drop their anchors for a view within the yacht club; or at restaurants on the water.

MENDHAM/CHESTER, NJ — It's becoming more common for superintendents, principals, and educational administrators state-wide to earn more than $150,000 including in Mendham and Chester, according to data from the New Jersey Department of Education.
Patch pulled salary data that includes superintendents, principals and assistant principals, curriculum directors and other employees in administrative positions within New Jersey schools.
Overall, more than 3,200 administrators made $150,000 or more during the 2022-23 school year — about 600 more than the year prior.
The highest earner for the Mendham Township School District last year was Superintendent Salvatore M. Constantino, who earned a salary of $232,085. The Superintendent of Schools for the Mendham Borough School District, Mitzi Morillo follows close behind with a salary of $230,625.
In Chester, the highest earner was Christina Van Woert, the Superintendent of Schools for Chester Township School District. According to reports, Van Woert earned $230,928 last year.
Here are the top earners in Mendham and Chester school administration, along with their current or most recent position and most recent salary. All data comes from the New Jersey Department of Education:
Former Governor Chris Christie imposed a $175,000 salary cap for superintendents in 2011. In 2017, the Christie administration increased the maximum base pay for superintendents to $191,584.
Then, in 2019, Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation that repealed the salary cap for superintendents while also establishing guidelines for school-executive contracts to limit or standardize bonuses and other perks.
School executive pay has long been a controversial subject in both local school district budgeting and state policy. Some of the state's highest-paid administrators received five-digit raises last year. But when the position's pay was capped, many districts struggled to maintain experienced superintendents, according to a 2019 analysis from NJ Spotlight.
Superintendents, principals and other school leaders throughout the nation have faced intense scrutiny for COVID-19 management and from politically charged movements to overhaul or eliminate certain subjects and topics from the curriculum. But those obstacles have also fallen to teachers and other rank-and-file school employees. And the pandemic exacerbated New Jersey's shortage of teaching candidates.

CHESTER, NJ — An educator who made an impact on the Chester School District was recognized by the community for the difference she made in the lives of children.
Last week, Michele Stanton, the outgoing principal of Bragg School, was honored with a special bench dedication as a way to commemorate her impact within the school district.
Stanton began her career within the Chester School District 33 years ago, and since then she has worked as a teacher, math coach, dean of students, supervisor of instruction and most recently, as the principal of Bragg School.
The Bragg School, which is located at 250 Route 24 in Chester, is a highly rated public school with 325 students in grades 3-5 and an 8-to-1 student-teacher ratio.
"Mrs. Stanton is a dynamic and dedicated educator who always puts children first and has been a champion of Chester's children since 1989. She is one of the most hard-working, creative, and energetic educators I have ever worked with and has left a long-standing positive impact on Chester's children that will last for years to come," Superintendent of Schools Christina Van Woert told Patch in February when Stanton announced her resignation.
Stanton decided to leave the district earlier this year, and she intends to use her newfound freedom in retirement to visit and support family and friends who live outside of New Jersey, as well as to pursue other interests.
The red bench, which was donated by the Chester PTO, will serve as a permanent tribute to Stanton within the school district.
The Chester PTO is a school community organization that funds many of the programs, clubs, and activities that children participate in throughout the school year. All funds raised by the PTO throughout the year are reinvested directly into the schools and classrooms, officials said.
"I know that Bragg will continue to be an amazing place to learn because the staff is incredible. We have accomplished so many wonderful things, and I know we are in a good place right now," Stanton previously told Patch.

MENDHAM, NJ — After several years of waiting, multiple trips before the borough's planning board, and the cancellation of plans for a drive-thru, the new Dunkin' on Main Street could open as soon as next week.
According to Mendham Borough Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner, the owner of the new coffee and donut shop stated that they are awaiting final approval from the town engineer before opening.
"Once that sign-off has been completed, he said he can be open in a matter of days. He's hoping for a soft opening next week," Serrano Glassner said.
The coffee shop, which has been described as a "next-generation Dunkin restaurant," was approved for 25 East Main Street in December 2018, following initial public objections to the proposed drive-thru.
At the time, the borough stated that although the use of a fast food restaurant is permitted in the HB Zone, a drive-thru is not. As a result, the applicant petitioned the Board of Adjustment for "d" variance relief to allow the drive-thru.
This application, however, did not proceed to hearings and was withdrawn in the face of significant apparent opposition, particularly from residents near the site. Following that, the applicant revised its plan by removing the drive-thru.
Since the approval, some residents have expressed concerns on social media about preserving the borough's historic nature, claiming that the modern signage did not fit the community's character. "I am a DD fan, but I think the huge Dunkin sign could have been made to look a little more colonial since we live in such a historic town," one resident wrote on Facebook.
Mayor Serrano Glassner, on the other hand, claims that Dunkin fulfilled all of the State, County, and Municipal requirements for opening a business while also designing a building that is historically consistent with the borough.
"As Mayor, I am honored to welcome new businesses like Dunkin's. Dunkin's has so much they will be contributing to our community, including the beautiful design of the building, which is historically consistent with our Main Street area. I've had countless residents ask me when they are opening, so I know Dunkin's will be getting a warm reception when they open their doors and serve up those first Munchkins," Serrano Glassner said.
The new location is Dunkin's only one in the Medhams; the closest other location is at 112 US-206 in Chester.

It’s harvest season, perfect timing for Lebensfreude LLC, the farmland firm on which Chester Township’s famous Alstede Farms operates, to reap a $15,000 Morris County Small Business Grant.
Morris County Commissioner Deputy Director John Krickus delivered the check to Kurt and Mary Alstede on Wednesday after touring the Alstede Market in Chester Township and visiting the neighboring property housing Lebensfreude LLC, which translates into: “joy of living.” The program, launched with $10 million on Valentines Day, is designed to help small local businesses still being impacted by the pandemic.

“This grant is very helpful. It’s been over two years since (the pandemic start) and people forget, we were sweating bullets trying to figure out every week what we would do,” said Kurt Alstede, noting farming operations throughout New Jersey were hit with strict operating guidelines by the Department of Agriculture and Department of Environmental Protection.
Farmers had to cooperate for months under restrictions that ranged from requiring farm workers to wear protective masks even while working in the fields, to distancing guidelines that required farmers to find alternative housing arrangements for employees who live on site.
“It certainly must be noted that the Alstede family did everything to keep their people working and retained their staff throughout the height of the pandemic and afterwards,” said Commissioner Krickus as he visited the property.
To date, the Commissioners have approved 677 applications filed by small businesses and nonprofit organizations to receive grants of up to $15,000. The Commissioners dedicated $10 million and designed the grants to assist small businesses and nonprofits with pandemic related expenses incurred after March 3,
2021, including rent and mortgages payments.
The Morris County Small Business Grant Program has been a unique use of federal funds issued to the county through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which was designed to offer pandemic-related aid.
Federal guidelines covering the grant program will determine exactly which expenses qualify for coverage and which applications may be approved. The grants are capped at $15,000 per applicant. However, business owners and nonprofits are encouraged to submit applications that include all costs they believe may qualify for the grant, even if the total amount of a single claim exceeds $15,000.
A final review may determine that some costs submitted for consideration are not covered under the program guidelines. However, by submitting all expenses that may qualify, applicants increase the possibility of getting the maximum amount of grant dollars possible.
