COCONUT CREEK, FL – During the pandemic, longtime Coconut Creek resident Laura McDermott Matheric was concerned that many local youths would fall behind on reading and writing skills while being isolated at home.
So the English professor at Broward College hired a wood-maker to build a box to hold books, so residents could “take a book and share a book” as part of the volunteer-led Little Free Library movement.
Last month, Matheric worked with Coconut Creek City Commissioner John Brodie to install the box at Winston Park Nature Center at 5201 NW 49 Avenue.

There’s more than 150,000 Little Free Library book-exchange boxes across the globe, according to Little Free Library website.
Matheric, who is also the city’s poet laureate (read more here), said her Little Free Library is a donation to her city.
“I wanted to give back to the city that embraced me and my poetry,” she said this week.
Brodie said the box allows residents to swap out books at no charge, and it’s encouraged to keep the inventory fresh.
He’s hoping it’ll get more young people reading and “break the habit of children on their phones.”
“I couldn't be more proud of Laura and her implementation of this library,” he said.
Matheric said Coconut Creek has three other Little Free Library boxes: Lakeside Park at 5555 Regency Lakes Boulevard, Coconut Creek Community Center at 1100 Lyons Road, and Coconut Creek Recreation Complex at 4455 Sol Press Boulevard.
She said she’s working with Coconut Creek Vice Mayor Sandra Welch to add the boxes to an international Little Free Library registry so the boxes could easily be found on a map.
“A lot of people don’t know that these libraries are here,” Matheric said.
Matheric said she hired a former Coconut Creek resident to build the box out of white and red cedar.
“I wanted it to be durable and lasting,” she added.
She, too, hopes the books inside the box get more people reading and writing – which is part of her job as the city’s poet laureate.

Alternatively, you may participate in-person at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at the Chateau Mar Golf Resort located at 3501 Inverrary Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33319.

We have recently learned that the Turnpike is offering an alternative to the original 10-lane widening that would impact the City. The proposed alternative reduces the expansion from 10 lanes to 8 lanes. The Turnpike would still be widened to the west, but would be farther away from the City. Although the City has not seen the detailed design plans yet, we do see this as a positive move. The City still has concerns and we will be submitting formal comments at the in-person meeting. Our concerns include: the Turnpike’s future intention to move forward with the 10-lane alternative; placement and height of the noise wall; and receipt of the amended plans from the Turnpike. The City will continue to seek commitments from the Turnpike related to these three important issues. City Staff and Commissioners will be in attendance at the in-person meeting to voice our concerns.

On October 27, 2022, at the Broward County Planning Council meeting regarding the Land Use Plan Amendment for the expansion of Monarch Hill Landfill, more than thirty Commissioners, staff, and residents spoke on behalf of the concerns of our community. The Planning Council unanimously voted to recommend denial of the Land Use Plan Amendment application, despite, they said, the application being technically complete. The Planning Council is an advisory board to the Broward County Commission.

In Coconut Creek, at 3600 Sample Road and Florida’s Turnpike, the south side of the park features a disc golf course, a lake for fishing, athletic fields, and the world-famous Butterfly World.
On the north side of Sample Road, the park has horse stables, an educational farm, and model steam train rides.

The park offers a lot to the community, but why is it called Tradewinds?
Good question.
For the record, Tradewinds are so named because if you had a ship full of goods to sell or trade and no way to get it to the place you wanted other than your sailing vessel, a reliable and predictable wind that always blew in the same places in the same direction would be pretty nifty.
Sailors knew about them in the 17th century, probably earlier. The trade winds are a band of winds above and below the equator, thanks to the Earth’s rotation, blowing east to west.
A fairly extensive search and help from the Broward Library Research Center shows no reason why anyone would name the park after the winds.
Like Coconut Creek’s name (read more here), the founders may have made it up as they went along.
The 626-acre park is a slice of local history.
The family of Joyce Vinkemulder’s late husband, Neal, bought 40 acres of that land when they moved from Michigan in 1948, according to Lifestyle Magazine.
Most of those acres eventually became Tradewinds Park because Joyce and Neal resisted selling to developers to preserve the land’s beauty.
“It may not have been a financially smart thing to have done, but it’s what we wanted to do…The grandkids come [to Tradewinds Park] and still feel the same way,” Joyce said, according to the magazine. “They play on the same farm their granddad had years ago.”
The park stands testimony to the fact that even new communities can have a deep and interesting history.
