Even after losing several key players at the end of the first half, Demarest did what it always did and played team-oriented soccer.
Most teams play team-oriented soccer, but for the No. 8 seeded Norsemen, who downed No. 9 seed Vernon 3-2 in the opening round of the NJSIAA North 1, Group 2 sectional tournament, it’s a necessity that they prioritize the team.
Especially as the season goes on, top scorers or distributors often emerge and get leaned on to take the biggest shots or make the biggest passes. But that can lead to an offense becoming predictable and easy to stop.
So that’s why Demarest, which has seven different players with multiple goals, prefers the by-committee approach.
“It keeps teams on their toes as to who might score so it’s not like they have one player to shut down, they have a whole team they need to shut down,” coach Jaclyn Boselli said. “It’s an advantage on our side, for sure.”
Emma Cammalleri, who scored one of Demarest’s three goals, took it a step further and was more effusive in what it means to play Demarest soccer. Lauren Tong and Chloe Poirot scored the other two goals.
“It makes us the definition of a team because we’re all working together to get each other on the board,” Cammalleri said.
Though this team has hovered around .500 all year, they’ve played some of the Big North and Bergen County’s best teams, many of whom are in this North 1, Group 2 bracket.
Familiarity, though, can be a double-edged sword given opponents know what to expect of each other. So that creates challenges of its own, but challenges Cammalleri said her and her teammates are prepared to face head on.
“I think we have a lot of potential,” she said. “We’re a very hard working team, so whatever’s thrown at us, we’ll put up our biggest fight and then see how we do from there.“
A major part of being prepared to put up the fight is in having players who’ve done so before. And while the Norsemen might lack a true leading scorer, they don’t lack age or experience with 11 seniors and six juniors on the roster, so there’s not much many of this team’s key contributors haven’t seen.
But beyond that, it also gives the younger players a model to follow as their careers progress.
“It’s good to have age on our side,” Boselli said. “It gives my girls the chance to see the development throughout the year and what they can become down the line.”
It also makes every game that much more important now that it’s win-or-go-home time in the year and everyone else on the team is fully aware of what’s at stake.
“We’re not selfish on this team,” Tong said. “Everyone wants to do everything for each other, especially because there are so many upperclassmen and so many seniors.”

Ninety-one points were scored as Ridgefield Park held on to beat Demarest, 47-44, in Ridgefield Park.
Brevin Cooney tallied six total touchdowns -- four passing and two rushing -- in the victory for the Scarlets, who built big leads of 20-7, 27-7 and 34-14 before finally holding off Demarest, which was looking to win its first game under new coach Nick Guttuso.
Down 7-0, Cooney connected with Jeremy Chocoj for two touchdowns in the air from 65 and 35 yards out. Cooney then juked his way into the end zone for a 15-yard rushing touchdown to give Ridgefield Park a 20-7 lead still in the first quarter.
In the second, Cooney tossed another bubble screen for a 24-yard score -- this time to Joseph Rinaldi -- to push the Scarlets’ lead to 27-7. Demarest’s Dan Argenziano, though, found Chris Short for an 18-yard touchdown pass on the left side of the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the 18.
William Then rushed in for a 1-yard score as Ridgefield Park led 34-14 at halftime.
But the Norsemen reeled-off 16-straight points to make it a 34-30 game in the third.
A safety gave Demarest two points and the ball which it turned into a Argenziano touchdown pass to Chris Short. A 31-yard scoring pass in the air from Argenziano to Juel Reyes made it 34-30 with 4:42 to go in the third.
Demarest was driving again until it threw an interception which the Scarlets brought back to the opposing 7-yard line. That’s when Cooney ran in his second score on the ground of the night from seven yards out.
The Norsemen wouldn’t go away however as Jude Baez grabbed an 11-yard touchdown from Argenziano. The PAT made it 41-37.
Cooney put his team up 47-37 on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Rinaldi, his second of the contest. The extra point was missed.
Argenziano, who had six touchdowns as well (five passing, one rushing in the first quarter to open the game), threw a 58-yard score to Short, who caught three touchdowns.
Cooney converted a fourth-and-13 with pass with time winding down to help milk the clock.
Next week, Ridgefield Park goes to Snyder while Demarest hosts West Milford.
