DORAL, FLA. (WSVN) - After Hurricane Idalia made landfall in the Sunshine State, the Global Empowerment Mission in Doral is packing up and ready to send supplies to those areas hit hard by the storm.
Trucks filled with supplies left GEM headquarters in Doral for the Big Bend of Florida, Wednesday morning.
7News cameras captured several items in their assembly line such as socks, food, water and family hygiene kits.
Volunteers in an assembly line then put the items into the necessity kits.
Patrick Lynch, the Chief Development Officer at GEM, spoke with 7News about their current plans.
“It’s always getting the most amount of aid to the most amount of people in the least amount of time for the least amount of money,” Lynch said. “It’s what we’re doing here today. Our neighbors here in Florida, just up the road, are no strangers to storms like this, unfortunately, and neither are we. So starting yesterday, we already sent out two tractor-trailers worth of aid that are currently en route to Perry. They’ll be ready for distribution as soon as the storm clears.”
Lynch also discussed what GEM will do for the rest of the week.
“Throughout the day today, and for the rest of the week, we’ll have volunteers packing necessity kits in this assembly line right here behind me, to continually fill up trucks and get them up the road as often as we need to,” Lynch said.
They already have scouts on the ground waiting to survey the damage and welcome the trucks of supplies.
GEM also has food and water bowls for people with pets.
This is all part of GEM’s first phase of recovery. The second phase will focus on helping people will long-term solutions, which include dealing with mattresses, drywall and the things people will need to rebuild in the weeks and months after the storm clears.
“What we find is, there’s always two phases to our response like this: the short-term recover, the long-term recovery,” Lynch said. “The immediate aftermath is what we’re experiencing right now. So in this immediate aftermath, folks need basic supplies: food, water, hygiene kits. That’s what these family necessity kits are designed for. So, in the next 24, 48, 72 hours, we’re going to be packing these kits, putting them on trucks and sending them up the highway to our friends up north.”
But their work is not done yet. Throughout the week, GEM will continue to send much-needed items.
“We all have to come together as a community and help one another out,” said volunteer Anton Taveras. “People are very focused these days on their own individual needs and issues, so I think it’s important to help others and provide a hand.”

MIAMI — A popular U.S. fast-food chain is finally breaking into the East Coast market — with its first location coming to Miami-Dade County.
Carl's Jr. announced that it will be bringing its "iconic big, bold flavors" to the Sunshine State with its first Florida restaurant in Doral.
The restaurant's business was brought into the Miami area in partnership with RSMG Holding LLC and Retail & Food International Brand, according to a Tuesday press release from the brand's parent company CKE Restaurants. Not only will it be the first location in Florida, it will also be Carl's Jr. first restaurant to open east of the Mississippi River.
According to the press release, the restaurant will boast the brand's newly refreshed look while featuring fan-favorite menu items, such as the 100% Black Angus Thickburgers, Hand-Breaded Chicken Tenders, sandwiches and more.
"Carl's Jr. is known for serving impossible to ignore flavors, so we are excited to bring our iconic brand to South Florida where audacious is a lifestyle and we're sure to fit in," stated Chris Bode, chief operating officer of CKE Restaurants. "South Florida is an important part of our growth strategy and we're thrilled to welcome the South Florida community to experience our fan-favorite, authentically crafted menu items whenever the craving hits."
Ron Santolaya, owner and managing director of RSMG, along with partners Milko Grbic and Claudio Fernandez, are leading a team of investors with the primary mission of bringing Carl's Jr. to Florida and positioning the brand as a market leader.
RSMG is expected to break ground on the Doral location in summer 2023 as CKE Restaurants and RSMG actively search for new real estate partners with drive thru capabilities and working to develop an additional 35 locations across South Florida.
According to the press release, Santolaya has extensive and successful experience leading RSMG's operations of Carl's Jr. restaurants in the U.S., Canada and Latin America for nearly four decades.
"The CKE brands are beloved by people all over the world and we look forward to introducing this iconic brand to Florida with the opening in Doral," Santolaya stated. "This expansion will allow Carl's Jr. to reach the South Florida community for the first time and offer a refreshing, new dining experiences."
Currently, Carl's Jr. has more than 1,000 locations throughout the Western U.S. with a strong presence in California, where the company was born more than 80 years ago, according to the press release. DORAL, Fla. – The Global Empowerment Mission in Doral is sending aid Tuesday by preparing vans and pickup trucks filled with family supplies and headed towards Southwest Florida in preparation of Hurricane Idalia.
Local 10 News spoke with Chief Development Officer Patrick Lynch, of the GEM, who explained the strategy behind sending family necessity kits from South Florida to the Panhandle.
“In general, these kits can sustain a family of four for up to a week,” said Lynch. “We have 34 packs of bottled water, non-perishable food items, soap, personal hygiene items, toothpaste and toothbrushes to pre-position the aid so that we can distribute it as soon as the storm moves out.
As supplies head north, animals who are up for adoption are evacuating south.
Broward County Humane Society officials are heading to Citrus County Animal Services in Inverness, Florida to pick up approximately 20 animals that have been at the shelter waiting to be adopted to safely transport the animals in the storm’s path to a shelter in Fort Lauderdale.
In anticipation of the impending threat posed by Idalia, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Miami Fire Rescue stepped up their support efforts by dispatching its Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams to the west coast and the central part of the state.
“We’re prepared for anything the storm is gonna bring our way,” said Maggie Castro, of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. “We have K-9s, doctors, water assets and 90 people heading up to north Florida, ready to take on any task. We’re gonna be self-sufficient for the next 14 days and bring everything with us that we need to sustain ourselves so that we’re not a burden to a community suffering from a hurricane.”
Authorities said at least 170 firefighters are heading over from Miami on Tuesday.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue K-9 specialist Carlo Galluccio told Local 10 News that he is grateful for the support and says having Saturn, a K-9 that assisted in the search and rescue efforts after the Surfside condo collapse along with Hurricane Ian, will help tremendously.
“We’re looking for people who are still alive -- even if they can’t call out, (are) unconscious and just breathing, she will be able to find them,” said Galluccio, when discussing how K-9s will assist in the search.

MIAMI -- As Miami-Dade County firefighters continued to battle a fire at a Doral renewable energy plant for the fifth straight day, officials urged residents in some parts of the city limits to remain indoors Friday because the air could become more smoky while crews work to get better access to extinguish the blaze.
The effort to put out the fire will include demolition work at the Covanta Energy plant, located at 6990 NW 97th Ave., in order to give firefighters better access to the "center of the fire," officials said in a written statement.
Officials advised "out of an abundance of caution" that Doral residents who live between NW 74 Street and NW 92 Street and NW 92 Avenue to NW 112 Avenue remain inside with the windows closed.
Officials also said in the statement that Doral Glades Park and Doral Legacy Park would close Friday and all scheduled outdoor programming in Doral would be rescheduled.
In a written statement, Miami-Dade County Public Schools said it is monitoring the situation.
"In an abundance of caution and because of the latest assessment made by the Environmental Protection Agency, parents at Andrea Castillo Preparatory Academy and Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School were encouraged to pick up their children from school," the statement said. "M-DCPS will continue to monitor conditions, and if there are any changes to next week's school schedule, parents will be notified via the appropriate channels of communication."
Between timed grocery store runs, families with homes nearby worried.
"When's it going to stop?" Ruben Batista, who lives in the area of concern, said.
"I'm going to stay inside my house," Andres Eslarer, who also lives nearby, said.
"I'm not going to stay out."
"I'm very concerned because we're getting sick," Sirling Sanchez, who also lives in the area, said.
Members of her family recently lost voices and wonder if it is connected to the fire and smoke.
"We don't have any answers," Sanchez said.
"So, that's a problem."
Still, some people carried on without concern. Groups of children played outside their apartments in the affected area. Uber driver Ceasar Pinera stood outside his car without a mask while he waited for customers.
He told CBS4 News that the elements can be dangerous but he had a job to do and hoped to be okay.
The three-alarm fire at the Covanta Energy site broke out Sunday at the county-owned facility, prompting a response by over 100 county firefighters.
Officials have said previously that four of 11 buildings at the Covanta site suffered fire damage and two of the structures were still on fire as of Thursday.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava held a news conference to provide updates about the blaze Friday afternoon.
