DJ Mitchell is the kid who walks into a gym and always has to prove that he belongs on the basketball court.
Mitchell has proven he is a Division I college player, and now he wants to show that Hartford belongs in its first NCAA Tournament.
“I would be lying if I said this has been easy to do,” Mitchell said.
What the 6-foot, 160-pounder from Englewood Cliffs has done is build himself from a little-known high school player into a starting junior guard who helped Hartford earn a trip to March Madness by winning the America East Conference title.
“It’s a bit surreal,” said Mitchell, a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair. “I don’t think the moment has actually hit me yet. Right now, all I can think about is, ‘What can I do for our next game so we can win?’”
Mitchell and Hartford (15-8) are the No. 16 seed in the South bracket and will face No. 1 seed Baylor (22-2) in the opening round on Friday at 3:30 p.m. A No. 16 seed has only beaten a No. 1 seed once in the history of the tournament.
Mitchell has built a reputation as a player who can not only shoot from the perimeter and defend, but he’s also willing to do a chalkboard-worth of little things necessary to win.
“If you walk into my locker room, it says, ‘smaller the detail, greater the value,’” Hartford coach John Gallagher said. “DJ Mitchell does all the small things in basketball: the extra pass, being in the right position on defense, rebounding down, taking a charge. All the little things that add up to winning, that’s DJ Mitchell.”
Mitchell arrived at Immaculate Conception, a non-public powerhouse, during his junior year after not playing as a sophomore at small-school Cresskill. Prior to Cresskill, he attended Dwight-Englewood until seventh grade and IMG Academy in Florida for eighth and ninth grade.
“He was an underdog as a player,” Immaculate Conception coach Jimmy Salmon said. “He didn’t come to us as the highly regarded guy. He’s a self-made player.
"He was and is a student of the game," Salmon added. "It was always his desire to get better. He never turned down an opportunity to work out with any of our coaches."
Mitchell's mom, Monica, said her second of four children understands that he has to listen to his coaches if he wants make it from the bench to the court. Thus, he has been labeled as "coachable."
“You tell him and he understands what you’re telling him and he’s going to learn it and find a way to add value,” Monica Alvarez Mitchell said. “And he’s not the superstar, he’s a grinder. He’s going to do whatever it takes.”

Mitchell said it’s difficult always having to prove himself. Such is the life of an undersized, unheralded athlete, and so he spent a postgraduate year trying to improve at a Connecticut prep school, St. Thomas More.
“It is tough, especially for my own confidence, thinking, ‘I am this good, I’m good enough,’ but then other people don’t see it the same way," Mitchell said."
Hartford gave him a chance. As a freshman, he played 25 games and totaled 24 points and 13 assists in 160 minutes. As a sophomore, he earned a scholarship, played 30 games and averaged 6.4 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists before the pandemic halted the Hawks' season one win shy of the conference title and an NCAA bid.
Mitchell has played every game this season for Hartford and started the last 13. He's averaging 8.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.0 assists. He leads the Hawks in three-pointers with 42 and is shooting 42 percent from behind the arc (42-for-100).
“He’s an elite college basketball shooter, elite. He is a very good defender. But most of all, he’s even a better teammate,” Gallagher said. “And we talk about it all the time, ‘Are you an energy giver or an energy taker?’ Every day of DJ’s career, he’s been an energy giver.”
Mitchell's family will be bringing the energy Friday to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. His mom said, “I think we have like 30 tickets. This is like a dream come true. This is a huge moment.”
Mitchell is scheduled to graduate this summer with a degree in business management, but he still has two years of college eligibility remaining.
“This pandemic has definitely been tough, but it’s comforting to know that I have this wonderful support system, and my family and friends have given me the world to even be able to pursue basketball as my career," he said. "I’m excited, I’m grateful, I’m thankful, that they’re able to come, and it gets me fired up. I can’t wait for the game.”

Former President Donald Trump boarded a plane and retreated to supporters at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster hours after his arrest at a federal courthouse in Florida on Tuesday.
His “summer home” in Somerset County might actually be a critical location in his growing court troubles, according to The Atlantic, which published “Jack Smith’s Backup Option,” name-checking Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith.

It's not every day you see the New Jersey municipality of Bedminster blaring in a banner headline on the Drudge Report. But the conservative aggregator was drawing attention to The Atlantic report in which legal experts Ryan Goodman and Andrew Weissmann said the former president might have committed separate federal crimes while in New Jersey.
That means he could face a federal jury pulled from New Jersey.
In the indictment unsealed last week, federal prosecutors described at least two times in 2021 that Trump showed classified Department of Defense documents to visitors at his Bedminster golf club.
The first time, it was a July 2021 meeting that was recorded on audio, with a writer and publisher and two staff members — none of whom had security clearance to see such documents, the indictment said.
During that recorded visit, Trump said the documents he was showing them were “highly confidential” and “secret,” according to the indictment.
A month or two later, federal prosecutors said Trump showed a “classified map” related to a military operation to a member of his political action committee — while also telling the person that he should not be showing them the map.
Amid those serious accusations, Trump on Tuesday in Bedminster called his 37-count indictment stemming from his handling of classified documents “the most evil and heinous abuse of power in the history of our country.”
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Trump delivered remarks on Tuesday in Bedminster, which were fact-checked by Politifact.
“The Presidential Records Act requires that all official documents be returned to the National Archives upon a president’s departure,” the nonpartisan organization said in a follow-up.
“The act does not include a negotiating process between the president and the National Archives over official government records,” it added.
Trump's previous statements have been examined by Snopes, with context to his criticism of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's email server controversy.
In 2018, Trump signed a law that boosted the penalty for “unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents or material.”
Instead of a misdemeanor, it became a felony charge — punishable by up to five years in prison, as reported by Newsweek.

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS. N.J. — Around 8 million bottles of cleaning products are being recalled after potentially dangerous bacteria were found in some of the products.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the recall involves The Laundress laundry detergent, fabric conditioner and other cleaning products. The products were sold online at TheLaundress.com, Amazon.com, and additional websites and in stores at The Laundress, Bloomingdale’s, The Container Store, Saks Fifth Avenue, Target, Nordstrom, Jenni Kayne, Kith, Peruvian Connection, N.Peal, Brooklinen, and other major retailers nationwide, through September 2022 for between $8 and $100.
The recall comes after testing identified bacteria, including Burkholderia cepacia complex, Klebsiella aerogenes and multiple different species of Pseudomonas, inside certain recalled products. So far, the company is aware of 11 people who reported Pseudomonas infections. It is investigating these reports to see if there is any connection to the recalled products.
The Laundress says people with weakened immune systems, external medical devices, and underlying lung conditions who are exposed to the bacteria face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment. The bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, or through the eyes or a break in the skin. People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by the bacteria.
In the company’s FAQ guide for the recall, it said while the risk of bacteria being present on cleaned clothes is low, it recommends rewashing the clothing for those who have a weakened immune system, external medical devices, or underlying lung condition.
People can treat their washers by running them with an alternate laundry product or washing machine sanitizer. A hot, dry cycle should clean the dryer.
If anyone has any concerns with dishes or surfaces they used the product on, they should rewash them with an alternative product.

He held Assistant Superintendent positions in Windsor, NY, Hilton, NY, and White Plains, NY. His career led him to become a Superintendent of Schools in Valhalla, NY and Summit, NJ where he retired in 2004.

After retirement from the Summit, New Jersey School District, Michael and Lunetta lived in Clayton, Oklahoma for several years while building a home in Venice, Florida where they resided for over 15 years before moving to Englewood. During his retirement, he became an avid Bonsai collector and expert in the art form. His collection included as many as 125 Bonsai Trees at the peak of his involvement with the art form. He was elected President of Sho Fu Bonsai Society of Sarasota and Bonsai Societies of Florida. He also was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Venice, Florida. He served as Senior Warden under 2 Rectors and was Treasurer of the Church for many years.
