We were recently invited to check out the Schiele Museum of Natural History, in Gastonia. This museum was the number one mentioned activity when we polled readers about what we should do on a trip to Gastonia. We enjoyed the museum and had enough time to explore more of the town after leaving the museum.
Knowing how I’m on a continual quest for awesome tacos, Reader Jes suggested we try Viva Tequis. I’m so grateful she did. In fact, I thought about the food from there for days after.
Ok, I’ll be honest. I actually detoured through Gastonia the following weekend on a trip to Charlotte, just to eat there again. If that’s not enough of a reason for you to want to go, let me tell you about the actual food. Viva Tequis offers tacos, tortas, tostadas and more. They serve coke soft drinks, horchata, jamaica and there’s a bar in the back. While there is no children’s menu, the menu items are ala-carte and kid-friendly. You can fill your belly with yummy food for under $10 and that’s another reason to love this place! Fresh ingredients top the food with your choice of sauces from the hot sauce bar. My favorite items from the menu are the carne asada tostada and the carnitas taco, both topped with the hot avocado sauce from the salsa bar. Viva Tequis | 238 West Main Avenue, Gastonia NC 28052
After an early dinner, we headed on to explore the local parks. Gastonia has several parks with stuff to do to keep kids entertained any time of the year.
Gastonia’s first park, Lineberger Park has everything you could ask for in a park. Consisting of 18.5 acres, Lineberger Park is fun for families. You’ll find hiking trails that pass a Vietnam War Memorial, a playground, a mini-train ride, a splash pad, and a public pool.
The pool is open Memorial Day through Labor day and costs only $4 per person for a 2.5-hour session. That’s quite a deal because the park offers not only a pool, but a lazy river, a two-story waterslide, and an additional splash pad from the one in the park.
The splash pad in the park is open from mid-May through mid-September. The train is just $1 per person and has seasonal hours that can be viewed on the city website. The splash pad at Lineberger was at capacity on the day we visited, so we went on to explore the next park on our list. Erwin park has a playground, a community pool, and a splash pad. The kids really enjoyed the dump bucket feature and the water cannons. Someone smart designed these water cannons. After the splash pad, we continued on to the next park on our “Gastonia Park Hop”. To say that I was shocked to see Martha Rivers park as we pulled up would be an understatement. It looks just like the castle design at Greer’s Century park, prior to the redesign. The huge castle playground has ample seating for parents, and a restroom adjacent to the playground. We left the park at sunset and headed to the ice cream shop that our reader Rachel said to try. Tony’s Ice cream turned out to be a popular place! The fact that an article declaring it the “best place in all of North Carolina to grab a milkshake” was published that week probably lent to the insanity. We waited for nearly an hour with a lobby full of people for a hand-spun milkshake that was huge and sticking out over the cup! Gastonia has catfish races. During the annual Carolina Catfish Festival, people pick out the catfish they think will be the quickest swimmer and then hope for the best as fish compete in heats over the course of the festival. The festival includes fishing activities for kids and more.
The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden was recommended by readers, and while it’s not technically in Gastonia, it’s off the same exit as the museum. Information about the garden and its events can be found on the official Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. During the holidays, they have a holiday light festival that looks awesome and is on our winter activity list!
Rankin Lake Park is a great stop for fans of disc golf! You can enjoy 18 holes of disc golf with the beautiful lake in the background. The park also has a newly redesigned playground that includes a zipline, a walking trail, picnic shelters, and boat rentals. Fishing is allowed at the lake and requires a North Carolina Fishing permit for those age 16 and over, and a fishing fee of $2/$3 per person for non-residents. A great stop for homeschooling families and lovers of history, this relatively new museum focuses on the contributions of local African Americans to the area. GASTONIA, N.C. (WBTV) - A pay problem WBTV has been investigating for nearly two years is costing an area school district.
Teachers and employees of Gaston County Schools have been complaining they’ve not been getting properly paid. The school district said it’s a software issue.
WBTV has learned it became such an issue that a teacher quit and changed districts. It’s the latest consequence of the payroll issues within Gaston County Schools.
While the problem has lessened since WBTV first reported on it, it’s putting financial pressure on some teachers.
Some Gaston Co. Schools payroll issues fixed, others still in progress, officials say
One teacher who called Woodhill Elementary home said goodbye Friday to her students.
“Financially, it has been a strain on me,” Tawanda Smith, a former teacher for Gaston County Schools, said.
Smith has 10 years of teaching experience and worked for Gaston County Schools for two years. Friday was her last day and she’s now with a different area school district.
“It was hard because I enjoy teaching my students. It was hard for me to leave my students, but it wasn’t hard for me to make that decision to leave to get away from the county although,” Smith said.
Since December 2022, Smith said she dealt with overpayments, underpayments and issues with benefit payments. Most recently, her August paycheck was short by $300.
“They were still telling me I owed them money, so they just took $300. I don’t know what the $300 was for on my end, but they’re saying it was due to the overpayment, which is not correct,” Smith said.
Gaston County Schools did not respond when WBTV reached out about the story Monday.
In a previous statement last month on this issue, the district said: “Our payroll system is stable, and we continue to process our bi-weekly and monthly payroll runs as scheduled. Issues have become fewer with each new payroll run – employees are being paid.”
“I had a meeting with them prior to me leaving and they was saying that I still owed $372.18 and I can’t figure out why I still owe that,” Smith said.
She claims Gaston County Schools offered to match what her new school district is paying to keep her, but she declined.
“With the whole payroll, I need to make sure that I’m going to get paid and get paid what I should get paid, and it seems like since I was leaving, they were trying to fix the problem, like compensate me but I wasn’t going for that,” Smith said.
She believes the only way the payroll issue will improve in Gaston County is when more teachers become vocal about the issue. She claims some are afraid to come forward about the issue.
Gaston County Schools told WBTV in August if an employee is having payroll issues to contact their supervisor or principal.

I’ll be honest, I thought I was good at my job here at Kidding Around. I thought nothing got past me. Well, that illusion recently got shattered. I’m embarrassed and ashamed to say I had never heard of the Schiele Museum until we were invited. I learned that this little museum that I had never heard of was AWESOME, and I couldn’t believe we hadn’t been yet.
The Schiele Museum is named for Rudolph “Bud” Schiele, a botanist and naturalist. Bud worked with the community to establish the Gaston County Museum of Natural History in 1961. He needed somewhere to house his vast collection of specimens. This museum was a dream of his since the age of 17.
Boy Scouts will find it interesting to know that Bud turned down the opportunity to be the sole wildlife official in the entire territory of Alaska to be an executive with the Boy Scouts of America organization. Although he passed away just 13 years after the museum was dedicated, his legacy lives on through the museum whose name was changed to honor his legacy.
There is a lot going on at the Schiele Museum! Exhibits include dinosaurs, live animals and their habitats, a spectacular mineral collection, and environmental and agricultural exhibits outdoors. All of the exhibits explore science and the natural world. You can also visit The Farm and the Planetarium for an additional fee, which is worth the extra couple of dollars on top of your ticket.
The outdoor exhibits alone are worth a trip to the museum, especially on days when they have special events and programs offered. Check their website regularly for information on upcoming events.
On the day we visited there was a wetland education program down at the pond. We were able to make paper binoculars, a really cool little nature journal, and see some animals that were native to the pond’s ecosystem! This was all in addition to the regular programming the museum offers.
The Farm is really neat and has several live animals like alpacas, turkeys, pigs, and goats. Tickets to the farm are $3 per person. They also have a beautiful garden where you can learn all about different plants and flowers that grow best in this part of the state.
Past the farm and along the nature trail, you will see a mill powered by a stream, a Catawba Indian Village, a stone-age exhibit, a wildlife garden, a pond, and a play area for children called the “Playscape”.
We especially enjoyed our time with Mariah during the Wetland activity. Mariah can normally be found working in the animal husbandry and environmental education departments. She was a wealth of knowledge and was even the one who tipped us off to one of the parks we visited while in Gastonia. Look for Mariah when you visit, you’ll learn a lot from her!
In the lobby you’ll find the ticket counter. Tickets are under $10 and do not include the planetarium show. Please check the website for current ticket prices.
If you think you’ll be returning regularly, consider the membership. The Museum is part of the same ASTC passport program as Roper Mountain Science Center. Good news – if you have a RMSC membership, then you get in free to the Schiele Museum. The ASTC Passport program gets you free admission into partner museums all over the world.
If you plan to travel, it can pay for itself in just one trip to a partner museum. On a recent trip to Florida, the RMSC membership benefits allowed us to visit three different museums in the Tampa/Orlando area. Admission to just one of these museums would have been more than the membership cost us.
Once you have tickets purchased, you’ll see the current featured exhibit to your left, which changes out so check the website for the most up-to-date info. Next, you’ll go across the hall to the Dino Safari. Older kids will enjoy the exhibit for its fossils and different full-sized models. Younger kids will marvel at seeing the characters from their favorite train-riding dinosaur show up close and in person.
Next, you’ll visit the Mineral exhibit. My children love what they refer to as “beautifuls,” so this exhibit was a huge hit. My son was disappointed to learn though, that there were no huge diamonds on display. Me too, kid. Me too!
The rest of the exhibits are down the hall and to the right. There is a mixture of taxidermy animal displays and live animals. We got some really good photos with some of the taxidermy animals. I must say though, I hope I’m never that close to a brown bear in real life. The leaf-cutter ant display had my daughter mesmerized. They have the ants set up in little Plexiglas ecosystems and have video cameras for you to see what they were doing. The exhibits include the human history of North American Native Indians.
Admission to the second-largest planetarium in the state of North Carolina is in addition to the general admission price of the museum. Tickets are $5 per person. There are several different shows playing on any given day, so be sure to check the schedule before you head out if you have a certain show in mind.

GASTONIA, N.C. — The United Auto Workers union kicked off an unprecedented strike Friday against General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, which is the first time in its history that it has struck all three of America’s unionized automakers at the same time.
Nearly 13,000 workers walked out of the auto plants in Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.
Economists said the strike could result in billions of dollars in losses, disruption to the supply chain and other financial consequences.
Channel 9′s Ken Lemon spoke with a local UAW representative who said they are watching the situation closely.
Employees at this Freightliner plant in Gastonia are working under an agreement that ends in the spring.
Their pay is about the same as the workers on strike.
Their concerns are about the same, which are better benefits and higher pay.
So the Freightliner workers may feel like what happens to the car makers could happen to them.
Gastonia is hundreds of miles away from the striking workers, but the local UAW feels close to the issues.
Shop Chair Kenny Dellinger said they are so close that he thinks the fight now in the Midwest may be a similar struggle in Gastonia, but hopefully without a strike.
“Kind of gives us a forecast of what it’s going to be like for us,” said Kenny Dellinger, a representative with the UAW.
The strikers are fighting for better pay and the last deal was struck in Gastonia in 2018.
Dellinger said since then the price of everything has skyrocketed.
“Food, clothing, cars, supply, anything you buy has went up astronomically,” Dellinger said. “The people who build the product can’t even go out and buy the product.”
Dellinger said the local union has already met with Freightliner twice to try to strike a deal early, but they couldn’t.
He said truck makers in Gastonia are also fighting for one thing that is not on the priority list of their counterparts.
“One of the biggest things to get is job security,” Dellinger said.
He said they have a deal that once workers have produced a certain number of trucks, Freightliner can start making trucks in Mexico at a cheaper rate.
His union is fighting to make sure Freightliner doesn’t try to move production out of the country.
Dellinger said for now, he is keeping an eye on the current strike, hoping if car companies strike a deal soon to keep production strong, then maybe Freightliner will do the same.
He said Freightliner workers in Gastonia have protested and haven’t had to strike.
He hopes they won’t have to do that.

GASTONIA, N.C. — A youth football coach in Gastonia is off the team after video surfaced showing him verbally and physically assaulting a player.
He’s apologizing for his actions now, and he told Channel 9′s Hannah Goetz there’s more to the story.
Video sent to our newsroom shows Antwan Wyatt, a Gastonia Knights 12U football coach, grabbing and pushing a player while using profanity. After the video spread through social media, the Knights released a statement saying they just were made aware of the video and were handling it immediately.
Goetz spoke on the phone with Wyatt on Monday. He said he’s sorry for reacting the way he did and has apologized to the player.
Wyatt said that player and another one had been fighting in the van. He sent video that shows two boys fighting in what appears to be the same clothes from the first video. Wyatt said he was stepping in because of that fight.
“Like I said, I went a little too far with my language but I would never hit a kid, hurt a kid. I haven’t never hurt any of my kids,” Wyatt said. “I mean, I just panicked because I saw a kid being choked and his eyes close and go limp. Like what was I supposed to do?”

“I show these boys tough love but I show them love, you know,” he added. “I try to teach them not to make the same mistakes that I made, you know, in life coming up.”
Wyatt said that tough love is to make sure his players don’t make the same mistakes he did. He has been arrested a number of times and served 36 months supervised probation after being charged with selling cocaine in Lincoln County.
“The kids I have touched and been in their life -- I haven’t had one kid go to prison or die early because of the message I am preaching to them, what I am showing them, and what I am trying to teach them,” Wyatt said.
Wyatt told Goetz he agreed to step away from the team, but President Cliff Phillips said the team made that decision.
“We’re just doing the right thing, as far as the kids, as far as the program,” Phillips said.
Phillips also told Goetz this is a difficult situation and the players and coaches are upset.
“We pray for the parents, the kids, and the coach, you know -- for everybody to learn from this situation, and, you know, we grow from it as a football unit,” Phillips said.
