For Joan Kimmel, raising her children as a single mother has been the most important thing in her life. A 56-year-old nursing student at Warren County Community College, she credits WCCC with giving her the tools to emerge from a difficult past and move toward a brighter future as a college graduate.
With three children and no college degree, 25 years of her life were spent doing what it took to make ends meet, working at a ShopRite supermarket, a sandwich shop, and as an aide for handicapped children. “I guess you could say survival was my career,” said Kimmel. All the while, she stressed to her daughter and two sons that education was the key to, as Kimmel puts it, “not ending up like their mother, working non-stop and never getting ahead.”
Once her children finished college, their success inspired her to finally take that step for herself, and pursue higher education. Choosing Warren County Community College, she decided to enroll in the R.N. program and has never looked back.
“There was so much support and help available, not only from the staff, but my peers were also very accepting and supportive as well,” said Kimmel, a WCCC Foundation scholarship recipient. “It was the best decision I could have made for myself at just the right time.”
The nursing program at WCCC is considered among the best in New Jersey. Graduates of the program often gain high salaried positions at medical facilities in Warren County and elsewhere. When Kimmel graduates next May, she hopes to be one of those well paid nurses. And she'll know it was worth the time and effort, for sure.
Handling the workload was certainly a challenge for Kimmel, who continues to work full-time in addition to her studies, but over time, she has come to realize that her mission is without-a-doubt attainable. “Classes have been challenging, but my self-esteem has improved,” said Kimmel. “The overall feeling of accomplishment is one I wouldn't trade.”

A Warren County elementary school will soon close, but a parent’s petition is asking the school board to reconsider which one it should be.
The Great Meadows Regional School District decided in March that Liberty Elementary in Liberty Township should be the one to shut down at the end of the school year. Its 207 students will instead go the district’s other elementary school three miles away. That school, Central Elementary, shares a campus with the district’s middle school in Independence Township.
The district’s decision was based on logistics and funding. But Amanda Volker-Loguidice thinks they made the wrong call.
The mom of two from Liberty Township started an online petition to get the board to revisit its vote. After five days, it had about 200 supporters toward its goal of 1,000.
In a letter submitted to the school board at its most recent meeting, Volker-Loguidice says that the approximately 100-year-old Central Elementary is the older of the two schools by 50 years, and she questions the management of asbestos in the building.
“It is at the request of a significant portion of the parents within the Great Meadows Regional School District that the Board of Education revisit the vote of which school to close,” she wrote in the letter also sent to lehighvalleylive.com. “You were elected on the basis of trust in judgement, and we expect you to vote with the health and safety of our children in the forefront of your consciousness.”
Great Meadows has contemplated streamlining its facilities since at least 2017, when declining enrollment and tax revenue led to studies of its operations, according to Superintendent David Mango, whom the district shares with neighboring Hackettstown. It became more urgent when the state recently proposed aid cuts, Mango said in a December newsletter.
Mango did not respond to a call for comment about the petition or Volker-Loguidice’s letter.
Great Meadows is not the only Warren County school district losing an elementary school. Belvidere’s Third Street Elementary will also close at the end of the school year, following a school board vote in March.

What would you give to be in the same room as your idol? How about to perform with them? Recently, four local gymnasts got to do just that, as they were given the opportunity to perform in the opening number for the Kellogg's Tour of Champions. Giant Gymnastics coach Linda Lebo organized a group outing to the show, which was open to families in both Giant locations in Hackettstown and Lafayette.
Giant Gymnastics had 57 people from their two locations attend - because of their large numbers. Because of the large number of tickets sold, the Kellogg's tour invited four of the gymnasts to partake in the event. Madison Beaumont of Oxford, Kelly Cardell of Great Meadows, and Olivia Sabol of Phillipsburg are all members of the Hackettstown Garden Gators team, and were chosen for the honor. Morgyn Witt, a Newton resident, is a member of the Lafayette Gators team and was chosen to represent their Lafayette Gators team.
Sabol, 9, has been on the team competing for two years, and been taking gymnastics since she was 3. Kelly, 10, started gymnastics at age 4. She started Junior Gators at age 5 and Level 4 USAG at 6-years-old. Beaumont has been in gymnastics since 2004, and has competed since 2004. She is currently a gold level in USAIGC.
Witt, 9 now, started gymnastics in the parent/toddler class when the gym was still Schutz gymnastics, and has been taking classes at Schutz and now Giant, since them. She has been on the Lafayette Garden Gators USAIGC competitive team since they opened this second location a year and a half ago.
The girls all arrived four hours early to practice the number on the gym floor, get fitted for the leotards they were to wear and be ready to go at show time. They performed with gymnasts from around the state to "Let it Grow" by Ester Dean, and during the number, the USA Gymnasts- including the Fierce Five's Jordyn Wieber, Gabby Douglas, Alexandra Raisman and McKayla Maroney- joined them. "Morgyn was glued to the edge of her seat all night, amazed at the site of all the routines and dances the gymnasts performed. And for days after, she was on a cloud about performing there on the floor, as the the USA team walked right by her, or seeing them warm up on the bars while they were rehearsing. It's an experience she, and I, will never forget," said grateful mom, Margaret Witt.
