NEW JERSEY — Nine people in New Jersey are among 16 in four states who have been infected in an outbreak of salmonella linked to ground beef sold at ShopRite stores, federal health officials said in an investigation notice published Tuesday.
Among those who have gotten sick, six have been hospitalized, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in the notice.
Of the 14 people with salmonella illnesses interviewed by state and local health officials, nine recalled buying 80 percent lean ground beef products at ShopRite in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, the agency said.
Two others recalled buying ground beef from a ShopRite store, but didn’t recall the type.
“Ground beef is the only common food people reported eating,” the CDC said. “Investigators are working to identify the source of the ground beef sick people ate.”
Illnesses started on dates ranging from April 27 to June 16. Nine illnesses have been reported in New Jersey. Five people in New York and one person each in Connecticut and Massachusetts have also gotten sick, but the CDC said the true number of people who have been sickened is likely higher.
Recent illnesses may not be accounted for because it usually takes from three to four weeks to determine if a person is part of an outbreak, and many people recover without seeing a doctor or being tested for salmonella, according to the CDC. Also, the outbreak may not be limited to the states where illnesses have been reported, the agency said.
Salmonella infection symptoms, including fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps, usually start six hours to six days after swallowing the bacteria. Most people recover within a week without medical treatment, the agency said.
No recall has been issued, and an investigation is ongoing, the CDC said.
The CDC said raw, undercooked beef is a known source of salmonella. It should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the agency.

It was a victory for the nearby neighbors who vehemently opposed the plan. Now the developer is seeking to reverse the decision through a lawsuit filed recently in Passaic County Superior Court.
The land is currently occupied by a medical building. The proposed plan the developer is putting forth is to add two more buildings to the property. One would house a mental health facility with a sub-acute addiction detox center, the other, smaller building would be an urgent care facility.

Neighbors of the property attended all the meetings and vehemently opposed the proposed development, sighting security issues, as well as light and noise issues.
When denying the application back in March Zoning Board chairman Bill Van Gieson said, “I do believe this site is not suited to take on this much development,” he continued. “This is going to have an impact on the neighborhood; a visual impact and a noise impact just by the fact of its distance to those existing neighborhoods.”
The vote was unanimous against the application and now the attorney for the developer is looking to change that.
The six-page lawsuit stated that the Zoning Board of Adjustment “palpably abused their discretionary authority in that the action taken was in all regard arbitrary, capricious, unreasonable and otherwise wrongful.”
“The action of the Board of Adjustment was contrary to the evidence and testimony given by Plaintiff and its witnesses,” read the complaint. “Plaintiff’s financial interests have been adversely affected and manifest injustice created by Defendant’s Board of Adjustment arbitrary and capricious application of their planning, zoning and land use powers.”
The lawsuit is asking for a reversal of the Zoning Board’s denial of the application and to force the approval of the application. This result would also reverse the NIMBY victory the neighbors fought for and won back in March.

WAYNE — A project to relieve traffic buildup at the busy four-way intersection of Alps Road and Hamburg Turnpike will begin Monday, officials said.
The work, which is expected to take up to two years, will involve the construction of a pair of jughandles to eliminate left turns at the congested crossroads. Three additional traffic lights will be installed, and new sidewalks put in.
Both county thoroughfares will also be widened along certain portions.
Mayor Christopher Vergano said Sunday that his biggest worry about the project was the ability of drivers to enter Preakness shopping center. But he said changes to the plan addressed that issue.
"Traffic flows very slowly through that intersection," he said. "Especially if you're trying to make a left-hand turn onto Alps Road — there's a long wait."

Detours are expected to be minimal; through traffic will be maintained by shifting lanes for the duration of the project.
The north jughandle will go through the shopping center's property. The south jughandle will be constructed around commercial and medical buildings, including a chiropractor's office, a Dollar Tree discount store and an Exxon gas station.

A jughandle is often called a "Jersey left" because so many of the road loops are found in the Garden State. In fact, there are at least four nearby locations where they already exist.
In February, the Passaic County Board of Commissioners awarded a contract of $5.4 million to Hackensack-based New Prince Concrete Construction Co. Inc. to complete the work, which is being funded by state grants.
But the cost was considerably more than that because the county had to buy 22 strips of land from private owners within the limits of the project. In some cases, those acquisitions required the use of eminent domain.

SPARTA, NJ- The township council approved a resolution to apply for a $250,000 grant to upgrade facilities and equipment in the municipal courtroom. This follows a shared services agreement to have Sparta handle the court proceedings of the Borough of Hamburg.
The shared services agreement, approved at the January 11, 2022 township council meeting, was the result of approximately nine months of negotiations led by acting Township Manager Neil Spidaletto and Hamburg Public Safety Director Michael Posterino. Talks began with former Township Manager Bill Close in January 2021.
The arrangement will bring $70,000 a year in revenue and did not require any additional staff or court sessions, Spidaletto said. In addition to the court proceedings, Sparta will handle Hamburg’s summonses.

“All of Hamburg’s volume is handled by our current staff, Judge and prosecutor,” Spidaletto said.
Sparta typically holds eight court sessions a month on Monday nights and Thursday mornings. Hamburg only held two a month, he said.
At the January 25 township council meeting, the council members approved a resolution to submit a grant application to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs or DCA, Division of Local Government Services for a “Local Efficiency Achievement Program” or LEAP implementation grant.
The grants are being offered to “assist local units with the … implementation of new shared services.” The new shared service agreement with Hamburg puts Sparta in position to apply for the LEAP grant.
The township will be required to contribute 25% matching funds if the grant is awarded.
According to the resolution the DCA offers the grants to help defray costs that may be incurred during the transition period so as not to hinder the implementation of the agreement. Should Sparta receive the grant Spidaletto said it will be spent on improvements to the courtroom including furniture and lighting.
The grant money may also be used to add cameras and door locking mechanism, “large ticket items,” Spidaletto said. The room does double duty as council chambers where municipal government boards and committees meet.
