Hounds Town Hillsdale is a 5,000-square-foot green-and-blue space that can host 30 to 50 dogs. Their outdoor play area is completely fitted with turf. “When I opened this daycare, I focused on finding a spot where the pups can be carefully cared for. Our goal is to have these pups walk in and be themselves,” says owner Phillip Michael. “They play all day and night.” Aside from running the daycare, Phillip builds homes and lives in nearby Paramus.

While Hounds Town Hillsdale regulars will feel right at home, first time pups may need time to adjust. Of course, a staff member will be on hand to introduce every new dog to their new surroundings. Each new member will meet other pups that match their own size and temperament. Then, after finding a suitable pack, dogs rotate through a variety of play areas to enjoy new sights and smells. “Our daycare is unique because we leave all pups in the playroom,” Phillip says. “We group dogs by their age and size so this way all dogs are with those of similar sizes.”
When it’s time to take a break, every dog has their own townhome. There are also Kuranda beds in the playroom. For extended stays, Hounds Town Hillsdale offers both overnight dog boarding townhomes and luxury suites. During these stays, dogs first enjoy a full day of play in the daycare center. After that, staff members bring them to a separate dog boarding area for a good night’s rest. Depending on temperament and preference, dogs can either sleep in a private townhome or near friends in a luxury suite. Pups never have to share food with friends, as the staff brings breakfast and dinner straight to their suite/townhome.
In addition to daycare and overnight boarding, Hounds Town Hillsdale also offers day spa services. This includes teeth brushing, de-matting, nail trimming and grinding, and spa baths. They also host parties and special holiday events, so pups can take photos with Santa, the Easter Bunny, and more. The lobby is open to the public to ask questions and check on their pup. However, the lobby closes from Noon to 2:00 pm Monday – Saturday for nap time.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — In the Northeast Urban and Northern Central regions of New Jersey on Thursday night and Friday morning, the air quality levels reached above 150, heading into the "Unhealthy" zone.

The state had issued an Air Quality Action day for Particulate Matter for Thursday, something they haven't done since the first week in June.
The state issues such a day when the levels of fine particles in the air could cause problems for "sensitive groups" such as children, the elderly, and people with lung issues.
Experts have not said that Thursday's air quality level will rise to the level of Wednesday, June 7, when skies turned yellow in New Jersey. But the levels will reach Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups status.
Only a few towns have issued individual advisories about the smoke. In Essex County, the town of Maplewood noted that N95 and KN95 masks could help protect against particulates, and said recreation activities are not canceled as of now.

An Air Quality Action day for Particulate Matter (PM2.5) has been declared for Thursday, June 29th. Sensitive individuals, including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly, and the young should limit strenuous activities and the amount of time active outdoors.
Levels of fine particulates will rise into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) category statewide with highest concentrations occurring in western New Jersey due to wildfire smoke transport from eastern Canadian wildfires.
Ozone levels are expected to rise into the moderate category as aging wildfire smoke, sunny skies, and transport of emissions from upwind states will result in favorable conditions for ozone.

Various wildfires have burned over 19 million acres of Canada since the start of the year, around a third of them in Quebec, according to Accuweather. As of this week, Canada's wildfire season had set a record, with the smoke reaching Europe.
Those who work full-time with earth science and data have said that pollutants that cause climate change are responsible for the never-before-seen effects of the fires, but that there are easy solutions to make the air healthier to breathe.

The Borough Council gave initial approval Monday night to allow the construction of self-storage units in addition to mixed-use residential units on an industrialized site north of downtown where some residents want a community center to be built.
Amending the borough’s 2020 Hillsdale-Patterson Street Redevelopment Plan to let a developer build self-storage units would bring in tax revenue without affecting the schools or emergency services.
In addition, the council approved amendments that allow residential development of 28 units per acre, which could include affordable housing, and lowered the density bonus — the maximum number of units allowed for the entire site — to 60 units from 68.
The council also approved an amendment to the redevelopment plan that would limit the height of anything constructed on the site to three stories and reduce the height limit of each floor from 14 feet to 10 feet.
Though no developer has yet been approved to build out the site, a joint venture between Claremont Development and March Development of Morristown has been designated as the conditionally appointed developer.
No agreement has yet been reached with them about what will be built, said Mayor John Ruocco. "We are still in the negotiating stage, using the redevelopment plan," he said.

The permitted uses for the area, based on the borough’s master plan, include residential mixed use, with commercial space on the ground floor and residences above, along with general public purposes and commercial services. The units could include multifamily residences, an assisted living facility, beer gardens and a licensed spa.
The redevelopment plan, adopted in October 2020, encompasses the industrial properties on Patterson Street, Knickerbocker Avenue, Brookside Place, Piermont Avenue and Prospect Place. The area was designated for redevelopment a year earlier.
The borough's affordable housing agreement with the Fair Share Housing Center and the courts requires it to build 24 affordable units in the industrial redevelopment area. Claremont/March would not be responsible for building those units, even if they sign a redevelopers' agreement with Hillsdale.
"Claremont March is only building on a portion of the industrial redevelopment zone,” Ruocco said. “However, their current plans assume they will build at least 20 units."
The changes to the redevelopment plan now go to the Planning Board, which has 45 days to provide comments. The council will then consider those comments and may adopt all, some or none of them, and will then consider final adoption of the amendments on June 14 at a second reading.
Residents are lobbying for a community center on the site. "We are the only town in Bergen County that does not have a community center," resident Louise Sharrer said at Monday’s meeting.
"Seniors are 20% of the population. Please make that a must-have priority in the development project," she said.
The Hillsdale-Patterson Street Redevelopment is one of several projects taking place in the borough. Less than a one-minute walk from the development area, a Chipotle restaurant has been approved for 441 Hillsdale Ave., where a former Friendly's was housed.
