JUNO BEACH — Records are meant to be broken, and sea turtles nesting in Palm Beach County are well on their way.
Scientists and volunteers have identified a whopping 17,138 sea turtle nests in the Juno Beach, Jupiter and Tequesta areas so far this summer, according to a news release from the Loggerhead Marinelife Center.
At just halfway through this year's nesting season — which runs from March 1 to Oct. 31 — Loggerhead staff expect to scream past last season's final number of 18,132 nests on the 9.5-mile stretch of beach they monitor.
“We are observing nesting numbers in amounts never seen before,” said Justin Perrault, vice president of research at Loggerhead Marinelife Center. He said he expects the total number of nests to top 20,000 this year: A record for this slice of Palm Beach County.

The record has already been broken farther south on the five miles of beaches monitored by Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton — which have recorded 1,185 sea turtle nests so far this season. Last year, the same area had 1,058 nests, according to David Anderson, the center's sea turtle conservation coordinator.
"It's encouraging," Anderson said Saturday about the ever-increasing nesting numbers. "These are animals that don't reach maturity until 20 or 25 (years of age), so we need many, many years of data to understand the trends we're seeing."
While researchers don't yet understand how all sea turtles nesting habits fluctuate, at least one type of sea turtle follows a two-year reproductive cycle that results in high numbers of nests every other year. The last "high" year for green sea turtle nests in Florida was 2019, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Loggerhead Marinelife Center researchers also attribute the higher nesting numbers to successful conservation in the last several decades. As a result, sea turtles are able to return to their native beaches to lay their nests more than 20 or 30 years into their lives.
Three types of sea turtles regularly nest on Palm Beach County's beaches: The prolific loggerhead, the slightly smaller green turtle, and the massive leatherback. All three species are threatened or endangered.
As of July 12, staff and volunteers have documented 208 nests from leatherbacks, 12,379 from loggerheads, and 4,551 nests from green turtles.
Compare that to the entire season in 2022, when nest monitors found 282 nests from leatherbacks, 13,205 from loggerheads, and 4,645 nests from green turtles.
Northern Palm Beach County, from John D. MacArthur State Beach Park to the Martin County line in Tequesta, usually accounts for about half of all sea turtle nests in the county. Last year, there were a total of 37,183 nests in Palm Beach County, according to FWC.
Palm Beach County and our neighbors have always been hotspots for sea turtle nesting. More than 80% of all loggerhead sea turtle nests in Florida are found in central east and southeast parts of the state, according to the FWC.
But some nesting trends don't yet make sense.
Green turtles usually follow a two-year reproductive cycle, and the species set record high nest-counts in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019. Then, the years between 2020 and 2022 did not follow the typical two-year cycle, but were classified as "intermediate" years by FWC.
Changes in the green turtle's two-year cycle have been documented in the past as well — from 2003 to 2004 and from 2010 to 2011. The FWC says these changes are not cause for concern, and that nest counts may resume their two-year cycle or the nesting pattern may change all together.
"These greens have kept us guessing these last few years," Anderson said. "Maybe their population has grown to the point where we won't see obvious high and low years."
Meanwhile, leatherback nests reached a peak in Florida and in Palm Beach County around 2014, followed by a steep decline between 2015 and 2017.
Now, leatherbacks have made a "promising rebound," according to FWC. Leatherback nest numbers have surpassed 2014 levels in Palm Beach County, according to Loggerhead Marinelife Center's data.
Risks to sea turtles and their futures have been highlighted by recent allegations of "harassment" of the endangered species and higher ocean temperatures.
Last week, a group of residents sent a notice that they intend to sue the Town of Palm Beach for violations of the federal Endangered Species Act because the town is not enforcing its light restrictions designed to protect hatching sea turtles on the beach, The Palm Beach Post reported.
The group Bear Warriors United said mechanical beach cleaning machines leave deep ruts in the sand that stop newly hatched sea turtles from making it to the ocean, and that sea turtle nests are being improperly marked and then disrupted by beachgoers and unleashed dogs.
“The town of Palm Beach could have these issues fixed and be heroes in a week if they put their minds to it,” said Katrina Shadix, executive director of Bear Warriors United. “This isn’t a poor town. It’s one of the richest ZIP codes in the country and they could be sea turtle champions.”

Nesting sea turtles are also facing troubles even before they get to the beach.
Palm Beach County's sea-surface temperatures are three degrees warmer than normal this month at around 88 degrees, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Warmer water could spell trouble, because as water temperatures climb, coral reefs experience "bleaching" that kills part of the organism. As the main source of food for sea turtles and many other sea creatures, dying coral reefs can cause a domino effect on the entire ocean ecosystem, according to the Sea Turtle Conservancy.

Wildfire smoke from the far northwestern reaches of Canada created hazy conditions throughout Palm Beach County Tuesday, reducing visibility and triggering an air quality alert from health officials.
The smoke, which is traveling on the clockwise swirl of winds from an area of high pressure over the Mid-Atlantic region, could remain through early Wednesday before pushing into the Gulf of Mexico.
Florida experienced some of the heaviest concentrations of smoke Tuesday — and a spike in unhealthy air quality that ranked the worst in the country — because it was getting a direct firehose of north and northeasterly winds from the high pressure. Areas of the country closer to the center of the high didn't get as much smoke.
Brett Anderson, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, said it was a surprise that the smoke made it all the way to Florida from fires burning in British Columbia and Alberta.
"It's very unusual," Anderson said. "I started seeing it going south and I didn't think it would get to Florida, but it maintained itself."
An overnight inversion ? where the ground cools faster than the air above it ? exacerbated the early Tuesday haze, said National Weather Service meteorologist Robert Garcia.
An inversion, which is also a cause of fog, usually happens on clear nights when the land becomes cooler than the air a few thousand feet up. Air typically cools with height, so when the air high up is warmer, it acts like a lid to trap moisture, and smoke, near the ground.
"That smoke just got transported in the upper atmosphere down here, and it's one of those mornings where people are going to experience patches of lower visibility," Garcia said early Tuesday. "We've been keeping an eye on it through the overnight hours, and it's something folks should watch for."
Canada struggled with wildfires throughout the summer, and scores still burn out of control, including in the Northwest Territories and the Northeast provinces of Quebec and Ontario.
In mid-September, CTV News reported that some wildfires may burn until regular snowfall returns.

"We will need to adapt to living with fire," CTV quoted Shane Thompson, minister of environment and climate change for the Northwest Territories of the country as saying. "It's very likely these fires will need to be managed till snowfall."
At Palm Beach International Airport early Tuesday, sustained winds were blowing east-northeast at 17 mph with gusts to 25 mph. Garcia said that should have helped clear the skies closer to the coast.
Still, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, the air quality near downtown West Palm Beach was in the "unhealthy" range according to AirNow.gov. That's the fourth level of concern on a six-level scale and means that some people may experience detrimental health effects from the smoke.
By 1:30 p.m., the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County issued a reminder that the air quality was in a range that was "unhealthy to sensitive groups."
Jose De Olazabal, a pulmonologist on staff at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, said some of his patients with respiratory problems called his office with concerns about the smoke.
"They could see it with the naked eye, it was pretty impressive," De Olazabal said. "A couple of patients noticed it (Monday). They had already felt symptoms of coughing and congestion."
De Olazabal said for people with no health problems, an "unhealthy" rating on the air quality index will cause few problems. But people with asthma or COPD should avoid going outside. The smoke, which can carry particulate matter and add sulfur dioxide to the air, is also a concern for those with heart problems.
"People with cardiovascular disease tend to experience worsening events like heart failure and arrhythmia," he said. "If something is stressing your lungs, it can potentially stress your heart or even your kidneys."
Areas more inland where the wind was blowing at just 7 mph were hazier. Clewiston had visibility of just 3 miles early Tuesday, Garcia said.
"It's one of those things where if you aren't expecting it, it can certainly give you a bit of a surprise," he said. "Folks should take precautions. Use your low beans and give yourself extra time to reach your destination."

JLL represented the seller, Sterling Organization, and BPS Partners FL LLC acquired the asset. Sterling originally acquired this asset utilizing one of its fully discretionary investment funds in October 2019 for $25.78 million.
Built in 1986, Bluffs Square Shoppes is currently 98% leased to a high-quality tenant roster led by Publix and Walgreens. Additional national and local tenants include Uncle Eddie’s, Anthony’s Women Apparel, Goodwill, UPS, Toojay’s Deli and Café Sole. The property receives over one million annual visits, and its tenants feature a weighted average tenure of nearly 22 years.

Many residents across the Palm Beaches and the Treasure Coast are cleaning up after severe weather a tornado and flooding Sunday.
An EF0 tornado that traveled from Micco to Sebastian Sunday was confirmed by the National Weather Service.
The tornado was about 100 yards wide — the size of a football field. It had estimated winds of about 75 mph and traveled for half a mile.
About 7.4 inches of rain reportedly fell along the Treasure Coast. Some areas around West Palm beach got more than 4 inches.
Heavy rain and lots of lightning strikes were reported from Jensen Beach. Golf ball-sized hail was also reported in Port St. Lucie and White City.
Fort Lauderdale received nearly 26 inches of rain last week during a historic flooding event.
A high pressure system is expected to bring some dry air to the area later this week.
