When Lucy Sparrow thinks of New York City, she thinks of “Sesame Street.”
“As a kid, when I was watching shows based in New York, that’s what I saw and became familiar with,” the artist says in reference to Jim Henson’s metropolitan muppets.
Now, Sparrow is bringing plush, anthropomorphic creations of her own to Manhattan, moving her latest installation east of its summer home in Montauk, N.Y.
Feltz Bagels is an homage to the city’s great appetizing stores: iconic monuments that personify New York’s long-standing kinship with Jewish culture. Using her preferred medium of felt, Sparrow has crafted a vibrant, nostalgic storefront packed with soft sculptures of bagels, schmear and other deli staples — many of them with faces.
“We’ve got whitefish, we’ve got raisin challah, we’ve got some new flavors of babka,” Sparrow tells WWD. “I’m trying to focus on quintessentially Jewish products.”
The artist took inspiration from beloved New York institutions like Russ & Daughters, Zabar’s and Katz’s. Even the store’s name is a tribute to Jewish broadcaster Vanessa Feltz, who hails from Sparrow’s native England.
“My research consisted of going to as many delis and bagel shops as I could,” she says. “I’m gathering every single bit of information, including the layout of the stock, how things are presented in their stock fitting. It’s that kind of stuff that you can’t see in photos.”
Sparrow presented her first fully felted emporium, which was modeled after a British corner store, with help from a crowdfunding campaign. Following its opening in 2014, the exhibition was an immediate success, leading Sparrow to erect felt bodegas, pharmacies, fast food eateries and even sex shops. She’s since transported her cuddly, colorful realms to various corners of the globe, bringing shows to London, Los Angeles and Beijing.
Sparrow launched Feltz Bagels in collaboration with TW Fine Art. The owner of the Montauk gallery, Mike De Paola, is a longtime collector of Sparrow’s. After staging Feltz there from August to September, Sparrow plans to bring her bagel shop to Miami in December.
What sets Feltz Bagels apart from Sparrow’s previous exhibitions is that it allows patrons to customize their art piece, not unlike how one would customize their bagel order. This personalized thread runs through all of Sparrow’s work: she and her team cut, sew and embroider every felt food product by hand, down to the beaded poppyseeds on her “everything bagel.”
“One thing that I’ve always found is so important with my work is that even though there are multiples, each piece is essentially one of a kind because no one is ever made exactly the same,” Sparrow says.
Between 16 bagels and 44 different toppings, the choices are nearly endless. At Feltz, Sparrow serves as the deli clerk, constructing each customer’s bagel to their liking.
“You get to have that interaction with the artist that you wouldn’t normally have at a gallery,” she explains. “It’s very experiential, it’s very individual, and hopefully, it’s something that people will never forget.”
By handing over the reins to her customers, Sparrow seeks to challenge the traditionally rigid roles of the art world, turning the spectator into a participant. She cites Erwin Wurm’s “One Minute Sculptures” as an influence. The Austrian artist invites viewers to pose with inanimate objects in his critically acclaimed series.
Even in the age of Instagrammable installations like The Museum of Ice Cream, Sparrow says that some visitors still aren’t quite accustomed to having an immersive experience with art.
“I try to have as little input as possible when people are building their bagels,” she explains. “People are like, Oh, ‘What would you do?’ and I’m like, ‘No, this is your bagel, this is your time to curate it,’ and you are your own curator basically. Giving over that control is definitely something that I haven’t done before.”
Feltz Bagels will be located at 209 East 3rd Street from Oct. 3 to 31. Operating hours are between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. EST.

“After 10 amazing, crazy, beautiful years of @contrany the time has come to give this beautiful beast a break,” reads the announcement on Instagram.
The anniversary is on October 3, von Hauske-Valtierra confirms, telling Eater, “it’s one of those points where you revisit everything.”
“Honestly, we’ve just reached a point where we needed a change,” he says. “We can’t do more with Contra in our current location, so [we are] just letting it be for a moment.”
Eater’s previous dining critic, Ryan Sutton, consistently praised the restaurant, including during the pandemic, when he noted that that iteration “has mutated from an expensive (albeit accessible) French-American tasting-menu destination into a more affordable place for modern Chinese-Taiwanese takeout.” Of Contra and Wildair in 2021, he said, “The two Lower East Side restaurants remain excellent.”
The most updated Contra menu lists dishes like tofu with maple mirin and buckwheat; soft-shell crab with sorrel; and boudin noir with fava beans and nettles. A shorter menu is $110 while the full tasting menu is $180.
When the restaurant opened in 2013, Stone told Eater, “We’re not trying to say we’re the best chefs in the world. We just want to charge a fair amount so that we can do food that’s interesting and that people like.”
Ten years later, the restaurant, “took the dreams of two twenty year olds and turning them into a career and so many things I am incredibly proud of, things I never imagined possible,” they wrote on Instagram.
Von Hauske-Valtierra confirmed that they’re keeping the location and they’ll eventually put something new in the Contra space but declined to share more information. Wildair will continue on as-is.
To date, the duo owns Wildair on the Lower East Side, Day June Luncheonette, and provisions shop, Paracasa, next door in upstate New York. A third Catskills restaurant project is still forthcoming in Windham, New York.

About a thousand fans ascended to the Lower East Side on Saturday to cheer on the unveiling of “Beastie Boys Square.”
It was a long fight for their right to party — almost 10 years — but the intersection of Rivington and Ludlow streets, depicted on the group’s 1989 album “Paul’s Boutique,” will now be known as “Beastie Boys Square.”
The location has been a mecca for fans, dubbed “Beasties,” and after Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch’s untimely death at 47 in 2012, LeRoy McCarthy began advocating for renaming the street corner.
McCarthy was initially turned down by Community Board 3 in 2014 because the name change didn’t meet the requirements, and he was barred for five years from reapplying again. But, with the support of Council Member Christopher Marte, the New York City Council voted in July 2022 to honor one of the Big Apple’s most popular and successful hip-hop groups.
McCarthy said Saturday that he’s happy that his hard work paid off — especially during hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.
“This is very significant,” McCarthy said. “You know, this is hometown guys being honored by New York City for a hometown music genre. And so this is a very New York moment, so I’m happy that it is coming to fruition today.”
Marte recalled that the first email he received when he ran for office was asking whether he would support a Beastie Boys Square.
“I responded immediately. And I said, ‘Hell yes,'” Marte said. “It was the first political stance I took as a politician, so it’s been a long time coming.”
Surrounded by elected officials, including Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, Beastie Boys’ remaining members, Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, thanked McCarthy for his tireless work.
“This whole thing was [LeRoy McCarthy’s] idea,” Horovitz said. “He pushed to make it happen just for the love of rap music, you know. And thank you, we appreciate it.”
“I want to thank everyone that loves Beastie Boys music,” he went on. “I don’t really understand why. But I know that I love it. And so, in some way, that makes us kind of friends, right? Like we bonded over these weird records.”
Horovitz said it made him happy to know that 50 years from now, a kid on their way to school will pass by Beastie Street Square, look up, and say, “What the f–k is the Beastie Boys?”
Diamond said the renaming also pays homage to New York City’s diverse music genres.
“All this incredible music that we grew up on formed us,” he said. “We could not have ever been what we have become without growing up here in New York City and hearing all this incredible music, being around all this incredible art, being pushed around by all these incredible people. This is only in New York City.”
Diamond also paid a touching tribute to the late Adam Yauch.
“I would be remiss. I really gotta thank Adam Yauch, MCA,” Diamond said. “He was our brother on this journey, this amazing journey we all got to go through.”
Just in time for the street renaming, a brand new Beastie Boys mural was unveiled on the wall of Wolfnights on Ludlow Street. Mural painter Danielle Mastriano has repainted the mural four times during the last nine years. Mastriano worked all night to unveil the latest Beastie Boys painting and thought it was an honor to depict the homegrown band.
“We did this from the ground up, just as fans, to honor a group that we love and we think represents New York City,” Mastriano said. “Having the street sign dedication is like one of the biggest things. [The Beastie Boys] are permanent fixtures in New York City to all of us, but just to have the official street sign up is like the cherry on top.”
Among the crowd of amped-up fans head-bopping to Beastie Boys jams was Floridian Janete Fernandez. Fernandez was vacationing in New York City and learned about the unveiling on Instagram.
“It was kismet,” Fernandez said.
Lower East Side resident Komal Joshi has been a Beastie Boys fan since high school and shared that she was diagnosed with cancer shortly after Adam Yauch passed away from the disease.
“Adam Yauch passed away, and I’m ever grateful to be alive,” Joshi said. “And I think of him, and I think of what he must have gone through. That’s why [The Beastie Boys] are really important.”
Elizabeth and Adam Conely come from Morristown, New Jersey. Adam has been a Beastie Boys for thirty years.
“My friends and I, growing up, listened to “Licensed to Ill” on tape until it wore out,” Conley said. “And then my first CD ever was “Ill Communication,” so my heart is with “Ill Communication.”
Even the younger fans couldn’t tame their excitement about the unveiling.
Saigi Jaffee, 13, arrived at 830 a.m. with her mother to score a front-row spot. Jaffee proclaimed she was a “huge Beastie Boys fan” and couldn’t wait to see them.
“So I am autistic, and the Beastie Boys are like my favorite special interest,” she told amNewYork metro. “I love them so much.”
20-year-old Maria Lomidze came from Queens and really “got into” the Beastie Boys a year ago, but said they were always a part of her life, hearing their music everywhere growing up.
“I just love listening to them on the bus or when I’m walking,” Lomidze said. “You know, they’re, like, best friends even though I’ve never met any of them.”

LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- It's been a longtime coming, but the christening of "Beastie Boys Square" will be made official Saturday.
The street corner made famous on the iconic cover of the hip hop group's 1989 album "Paul's Boutique" will be renamed after New York City officially approved it more than a year ago.
Lower East Side's Ludlow and Rivington Streets will be known as "Beastie Boys Square," and to celebrate the honor, the group's surviving members, Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz and Michael "Mike D" Diamond, will join city officials and fans for a two-hour block party. Adam "MCA" Yauch, the other founding member of the trio, passed away in 2012.
The timing of the official "Beastie Boys Square" unveiling ceremony couldn't have been more perfect, as music lovers worldwide celebrate 50 years of hip hop.

"The...simple overview is that it's [going to] go from German to Eastern European, Mediterranean, and now, we have Chinatown, and a lot of Spanish-speaking communities," says Dolan Cochran, the education coordinator for public programs and content at the Tenement Museum, located on the Lower East Side. "But in reality, these communities are much more intermixed than we might imagine. It's not like turning on and off a light, where the community goes from speaking German to speaking Yiddish. It's a long period of the older population moving out, while a new population moves in."
Dolan adds that even when "one population...supplants the other, you'll see elements of the older community that remains." That’s often seen in its businesses, churches, and meeting places. And it’s a way of life that actor Luis Guzmán says, just simply works.
"Puerto Rican, Black, Jamaican, Dominican, Mexican, Polish, Ukrainian, Jewish, Hasidic, Chinese, Korean — it was just an incredible mix of all these different cultures and food. And to a certain degree, it still is," he says. "We all went to school together. We played sports together. We used to get into trouble together...You're growing up as teenagers, and then you start dating and stuff like that, and that takes on a whole different perspective. But it was just life every day."
Guzmán pauses, adding, "Man, I was so fortunate; we were so fortunate to have that with each other."
