Palm Beach County officials are further expressing support for Israel by making an additional $135 million investment in the country, leading to a total of $160 million worth of bonds in the county since the Israel-Hamas war began earlier this month.
The county’s purchase is the single-largest purchase in the history of Israel bonds. The announcement was made Tuesday morning at Congregation Torah Ohr in Century Village in West Boca by Joseph Abruzzo, the county’s circuit court clerk and comptroller, the office managing the county’s investments.
Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis also announced in a statement Tuesday the state treasury will invest an additional $120 million in Israel bonds, bringing Florida’s total Israel bond investment to $200 million.
Palm Beach County’s decision comes about three weeks after the county announced it bought $25 million worth of bonds from Israel on Oct. 11, becoming the first government body in the United States to do so after Hamas terrorists conducted surprise attacks Israeli civilians on Oct. 7.
“We will stand with our strongest ally in the incredible state of Israel,” Abruzzo said. The bonds “will assist Israel in running their government.”
Mark Ruben, the executive director of Israel Bonds in Palm Beach County, the broker-dealer underwriting securities issued by Israel in the U.S., said they’ve been selling Israel bonds since 1951, amounting to $50 billion.
“Israel bonds never missed a payment of principal or interest,” Ruben said. “Whether the times were economic prosperity, economic setbacks, peace, war, always.”
Dave Aronberg, the state attorney for Palm Beach County, said the bond purchases are a win for humanity, democracy and the taxpayers because they’ll receive a return on the investment.
“This is a fight against inhumanity against barbarism, against an evil terrorist group that seeks to wipe out Jews wherever they live,” he said. “Palm Beach County will reject antisemitism, will reject hate and will fight against terrorism, barbarism, inhumanity and Hamas.”
The bonds are either for two or three years, with interest rates at about 5.3% and 5.4%, respectively, Ruben said.
Similar to Palm Beach County, the state in recent weeks has made announcements about its investments: Since 2017, the state has purchased $310 million in Israel bonds, generating approximately $6.4 million in interest.
“Following the horrific terrorist attacks by Hamas on October 7, I vowed to assist our allies in Israel both morally and monetarily,” Patronis said in a statement. “As we’ve seen throughout history, democracy and freedom are fragile, and Florida proudly stands with Israel, the only democratic nation in the Middle East.”

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — West Palm Beach commissioners on Monday night gave the green light to an innovative affordable housing project — units made from steel shipping containers.
The 48-unit development from the Palm Beach County Housing Authority may only put a small dent in the need for this type of housing.
But it's a construction method that may set the tone for future projects of its kind.
The housing complex will be built at the site of the former headquarters of the Palm Beach County Housing Authority on 45th Street near the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.
The authority expects to get a demolition permit and begin knocking down the building sometime in December.
"This is going to be a pilot program," Tammy McDonald, who is chief development officer of the Palm Beach County Housing Authority, which is spearheading the project, said.
She told commissioners that the development will include three apartment buildings with 48 one- and two-bedroom units made from steel shipping containers in a construction project that is cost-effective and unique.
"But you won't be able to know they are shipping containers," she said. "They will be first of all washed and sanitized and all those things. Then from the factory windows and doors will be cut in."
Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a zoning change for the site, with members saying it won't have a major effect on traffic but will help stimulate growth in the area,
The vote was the last hurdle for the complex to be named the Legacy at 45th Street.
Ten units will be reserved for people with AIDS and most of the others will be for people who fall into the economic category that McDonald called "under-served."
"This project, this community, will serve the 'missing middle' in Palm Beach County," she said.
She said the apartments are for those who make between $45,000 and $72,000 a year, but too much for low-incoming housing and not enough to afford most rents in the Palm Beach County market.
"That would include your teachers, your service workers, cafeteria workers, public housing workers, county workers, city workers and the like," she said.
McDonald said those interested in living in the new complex will be able to start applying sometime in July, and those accepted will be able to start moving in next fall.

Fiduciary Trust was acquired by Franklin Templeton Investments' parent company, San Mateo, California-based Franklin Resources (NYSE: BEN), for about $825 million in April 2001. As of Sept. 30 of this year, Franklin Templeton has $1.4 trillion in assets under management.
This is Fiduciary Trust's fourth office in the South Florida area. In addition to 360 Rosemary, Fiduciary Trust has offices in One Boca Place in Boca Raton, 300 S.E. Second St. in Fort Lauderdale, and 2 Alhambra Plaza in Coral Gables.
The firm has experienced steady growth in South Florida in recent years, said Stoller, who oversees Fiduciary Trust's offices in West Palm Beach and Boca Raton.
"South Florida is a region of growing importance to not only our firm, but also the financial services industry as a whole, given the increasing number of transplants from across the United States and the world," he said.
Florida's population skyrocketed since the pandemic as more high-income households migrated to the Sunshine State in order to find better weather and avoid state income taxes. According to the Florida Chamber of Commerce, the state gained $39.2 billion in new net income between 2020 and 2021 with $7.4 billion flowing to Miami-Dade and $7.2 billion heading to Palm Beach County.

As they followed that migration of cash and people, financial services companies opened numerous new offices in South Florida. In Palm Beach County alone more than 100 financial service firms have opened offices since 2019, said Kristen Liberman, vice president of marketing and media relations for the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County. The financial services industry now has 73,989 jobs in Palm Beach County that pay an annual salary of $101,829, she added.
Currently at the epicenter of the financial services trend is downtown West Palm Beach where dozens of new financial services firms have opened up shop, particularly within 360 Rosemary, a building completed in the fall of 2021 by billionaire Stephen Ross' Related Companies.

The influx of financial services companies also pushed downtown West Palm Beach's office rates upward. In downtown West Palm Beach the average asking rent for office space in the third quarter of 2023 was $78.29 per square foot, according to a recent report from Colliers. In the rest of West Palm Beach, the average rate was $32.22 per square foot while in Palm Beach County as a whole the average rate was $40.26 per square foot.
In Miami-Dade and Broward counties the average asking rents per square foot in 3Q 2023 was $52.06 and $37.32, respectively.
