The Pequannock baseball team had the right opponent to prove it is for real this season.
Not only did Hanover Park reach the North 2, Group 2 final last season, the Hornets had started off this season unblemished with a 5-0 record. To add to that, Pequannock had not beaten Hanover Park since 2017 and had lost six straight games to its Morris County rival.
After finishing 14-12 last spring, Pequannock was off to a 5-1 start headed into Saturday’s matchup, but the Golden Panthers were still looking for a signature win to show that it is a team to be reckoned with. They did just that by putting a pounding on Hanover Park with a 11-4 home victory.
“Hanover Park has always been one of our arch nemesis,” Pequannock head coach Jon McBurney said. “We were in a conference together for awhile and this is the first time we haven’t been. They’re a great team with a great coaching staff. It’s a good win, don’t get me wrong. It’s just another team on the schedule that you have to compete against no matter who is on the other side.”
“It feels really good,” senior Joe Sabbath said. “Last year, I pitched against them twice and lost 3-1 both times. Coming out beating them 11-4 is a big booster for the team after losing to Parsippany in extra innings. We’re going to take this and keep moving on.”
Pequannock jumped on Hanover Park right away with a patient approach at the plate that was evident throughout. The Golden Panthers finished with 10 walks total, and following a Donovan Cassel leadoff single walks by John Vanaria and Sabbath set up a bases-loaded situation with no outs.
“I feel like that’s a big part,” Sabbath said. “You can only hit the balls in the zone and if we keep hitting like we are we’re going to put up a bunch of runs. Being patient is just helping us out a lot.”
Jack Picardo came through with a single to center field to drive home two and give the Golden Panthers a 2-0 lead. They took a 3-0 lead into the second before Hanover Park responded with three runs of their own with the big blow being delivered by Jack Massarano on a deep RBI double to the opposite field.
Just as it did in the first inning, Pequannock scored three runs in the second and this time never looked back. After missing all of last season due to injury, slugging first baseman Jared Maher has been huge in the early portion of the season.
He has been a big bat to slide into the cleanup spot in the order, and his two-run double to deep centerfield gave Pequannock a 5-3 lead lead in the second. That gave Maher 12 RBI already on the year in just seven games. He was then brought home on a single by Ryan Foley.
“He’s literally the definition of a cleanup hitter,” Vanaria said. “He’s a great hitter. He just makes contact and gets on. It’s what we need.”
Pequannock extended its 6-3 lead in the third inning by scoring three runs for the third consecutive inning with the Golden Panthers taking advantage of a few wild pitches. Sabbath then dunked in a two-run single to center field in the fourth on a low pitch to make it a 11-3 lead.
After the Golden Panthers got off to a shaky start on the mound, Aidan McArdle came in and allowed just one earned run in 4 1/3 innings to settle things down and give the bats an opportunity to rake.
Pequannock is hitting .304 as a team this season to go along with a 1.94 team ERA. In five of its six wins, Pequannock has scored at least nine runs.
“It’s been a giant step forward,” Vanaria said. “I feel like we have a really good team dynamic this year. We all get along well and there a lot of good players on the team. I’m excited to see what we can do.”
With the fast start, Pequannock is looking to maintain its success with eyes on winning the NJAC Independence Division and going deep into the Morris County and state tournaments.
“I think there will be a big mental aspect with that,” Sabbath said. “We have a lot of young pitchers, so getting them those innings earlier in the season is really going to help us later in the season. We will have to go deeper and deeper into our bullpen.”

Defying Gravitea is a cafe that offers drinks, breakfast, lunch, and fresh-baked goods. The 1,775-square-foot space seats 49 guests indoors, and features their own proprietary tea line. The interior offers a “warm, comfortable environment,” according to Gina. “From custom river tables, cozy nooks, our Sakura tree, and a hand-painted mural ‘treebute’ to our supporters; it is really a space designed to welcome people in to relax and unwind.”

A quick-serve concept, customers can order their items from the counter or place their orders online in advance. Tables are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. “We offer a warm environment, focusing on friends, family, and community, where everyone can eat without restrictions,” Gina adds.
The Defying Gravitea menu includes farm-fresh fare for breakfast (available all day) and lunch. “We are a gluten- and dairy-free space, but you’d never know it!” Gina says. They also offer baked goods made in-house daily with gluten-free flour. These reinvented recipes are based on five generations of chefs in her family.

Gina loves the Defying Gravitea Chicken Salad Sandwich. It’s made with Goffle Farm chicken breast, coconut yogurt, lemon juice, fresh tarragon, and currants. Patrons can order it either on a gluten-free house-baked brioche bun (made daily) or over greens.
Early response to Defying Gravitea has been huge. “We have had all the seats filled recently and a line out the door,” Gina says. “It’s such an amazing, humbling feeling to see people enjoying the space, their community, and the food.”
Besides their sit-down dining, they offer an event space for large parties by reservation. They also do catering for on-or-off site. Additionally, they accommodate custom orders for all occasions including cakes, cupcakes, pies, and loaves.
After years of struggling with body-image issues, Gina learned she was intolerant to gluten and dairy. (She has been gluten free since 1993). She now tweaks her family’s recipes and treats to create gluten- and dairy-free versions for all to enjoy. The song “Defying Gravity” is about pushing the limits and breaking boundaries, and that really resonates with Gina.
