PHILLIPSBURG, NJ - Phillipsburg was back on track for visitors with a day of festivities at its second annual railroad festival. Postponed due to weather, the 30th turned out to be a great day for rail fans all over.
"Rails, River, and Trains," seems to gaining momentum, and the fascination with all things locomotive underscores the town's deep pride in its history. “History is alive and well in Phillipsburg” said State Senator Doug Steinhardt.
Ed Bullock, the event's Emcee, set the tone by declaring, "We are a proud town today. We all love Phillipsburg, and this is an important day for all of us." The sentiment resonated throughout the day as the community came together to celebrate their shared heritage with visitors.

Once a bustling transportation hub in New Jersey, the festival evoked memories of a time when railroads were more than just an economic powerhouse; they were a lifeline, a source of recreation, and a form of entertainment. The spirit of this bygone era came alive through the meticulously restored Union Station, which transported visitors back in time, and the historic areas specially set up for the festival.
Mayor Todd Tersigni dubbed the event a "No Brainer" when approached by event organizer Aaron Coleman. Tersigni, along with State Senator Doug Steinhardt, reminisced about their family's ties to the railroad, dating back to the early 1940s. They were joined by Easton Mayor Sal Panto in celebrating the town's rich history.
Throughout the day, eventgoers visited Phillipsburg Union Station's renovations, absorbed the town's rich history, enjoyed rides on the mini train, and ventured to the PU Tower. Here, the iconic Toys for Tots train awaited, and William Strassner, a former CNJ employee, and PU Tower operator signed up for one more shift after an incredible 52 years of service. His guided tours, slideshows featuring original film footage, and the nostalgic sound of the ringing bell added to the festival's charm.
Families and railroad enthusiasts from Philadelphia to Nutley, New Jersey, and everywhere in between flocked to Phillipsburg for this one-day extravaganza. They came to shop, savor delicious food, explore the town, and, of course, experience the joy of riding the trains and ringing the bells.
The event was made possible by the generous support of Platinum Star Cleaning and Kays Electric, who presented and sponsored it. Many local businesses, such as McWane Ductile, played a pivotal role, with McWane Ductile delighting children with fun train toys and keychains. The US Army, DRL Management LLC, and the Carnegie Agency also provided essential support. Numerous contributors, including 69 News, IRCO, Lee Services, Lehigh Valley Style, Firest Commonwealth Federal Credit Union, Republic Services, Balloonworks, and H.J. Opdyke Lumber, added their unique touch to the festivities.
Collaboration among various organizations was key to the event's success. Partners included the Phillipsburg Chamber of Commerce, South Main Street Alliance, Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit Program, PU Tower, Neighborhood Preservation Program, Phillipsburg Railroad Historians, Friends of the NJ Transportation Heritage Center, Norwescap, Delaware River Railroad Excursions, the Phillipsburg Downtown Association, and the Town of Phillipsburg. Their collective efforts ensured a memorable experience for both visitors and vendors.
The festival featured three distinct areas of railroading fun. Area One encompassed Food, Drink, Entertainment, Media, and Business Partners, along with the main park area, teeming with Train Vendors, exhibitors, and craft vendors.
Area Two invited visitors to explore the Phillipsburg Union Train Station and Phillipsburg Union Tower, both open for tours throughout the day. These historic landmarks provided a unique glimpse into the town's railroad heritage.
Lastly, Area Three thrilled attendees with five exciting fee-based train rides at Delaware River Railroad Excursions. Phillipsburg's largest visitor area, offered a river train, a winery train, the Ol' Susquehanna mine train, a corn maze adventure, and the ever-popular great pumpkin train throughout the event, with rides sold out.

Pork roll, also known as Taylor ham in some parts of New Jersey, is a savory, salty, and slightly smoky processed meat that has been a beloved staple of the region for generations. Location: Shappell Park, 353 South Main Street, Phillipsburg A public parking lot is available across the street from Joe’s Steak Shop, and on-street parking can be found on the surrounding roads around Shappell Park. Note that there is NO PARKING along the Shappell Park curbs, and that Sitgreaves and Jersey Street will be closed to traffic.
Additionally, there are multiple private and public lots within walking distance of Shappell Park. Parking will also be available at Riverside Way next to the "free bridge" between Phillipsburg and Easton. There is on-street metered parking within walking distance.

This time, although the Stateliners got some of their walking wounded back, they were missing their top two running backs but still managed to beat host Union, 27-6, on Friday night in a game played at Cook Memorial Field.
Senior do-everything Kevin Burgess scored two touchdowns, quarterback Jett Genovese and tight end Ricky Krouse, both playing their first games in three weeks, hooked up on Genovese’s first of three scoring passes, and sophomore running back Sam Dech had a very successful coming out party to lead Phillipsburg to victory.

After a defensive-minded first half, Phillipsburg took the opening kickoff of the second half and scored on a 10-play, 87-yard drive that took half the quarter and culminated with Genevese’s pass to a wide-open Krouse for a 26-yard score to give the Stateliners a 13-6 advantage after Colin Hoey’s PAT kick. It was Krouse’s second career reception and first TD.
Big plays in the drive were a 23-yard run by Dech, where he carried a pile of players over 10 yards before being taken down, and an 11-yard run by Genovese on a third-and-10 play.
P’burg, which improved to 6-1 on the season, made it 19-6 with 2:04 left in the third quarter when, after a 15-yard gain by Dech on the first play, Genovese passed to Burgess who broke several tackles on the way to a 63-yard touchdown to cap a short-lived, 73-yard scoring drive.
Interception at the 1-yard line? No problem says P’Burg
The Stateliners proceeded to get the ball back after Felix Matos’ interception on a fourth-and-20 play by Union to set up P’burg 99-yards away from its goal line. No problem, said Phillipsburg’s outstanding offensive line of Ben Coury, Joe Ross, Gifton Friday Johnson, Jason Helm and Colin Higgins.
P‘burg went on a 99 1/2-yard scoring drive after the offense was penalized half the distance to the goal on an illegal procedure penalty on the first play, which took 16 plays and almost 10 minutes off the clock before Genovese hit sophomore Michael Bracco with a 20-yard scoring strike in the end zone on a fourth-and five play. It was Bracco’s first varsity reception and touchdown.
Dech has a break-out night
The first 15 plays of the drive were all runs as the ‘Liners picked up five first downs, three of those by the 5-foot-9 165-pound Dech on third-down plays, who worked as the bell cow running back. Dech, who gained 46 yards on nine carries and scored a TD last week in his varsity debut, rushed for 95-yards on 19 attempts on his break-out night.
The biggest first down of that drive came when P’burg gambled on a fourth-and-seven play on its own 37. With Matos, another outstanding versatile two-way player, as one of three Stateliners ups backs in front of the punter, taking the direct snap from Coury and running for 33 yards and Phillipsburg kept possession of the ball.
The game was dominated by the defenses in the first half as the first five drives of the night produced zero first downs.
Burgess continues to spark the Stateliners
Phillipsburg sparkplug Burgess returned a punt 25 yards to set up the Stateliners on Union’s 45 yard-line on P’burg’s third drive of the game. Burgess then finished off the eight-play scoring drive with a 24-yard touchdown scamper on an end around to the left sideline with 10:44 left in the second quarter. Colin Hoey’s PAT made it 7-0.
Union’s offense immediately came to life on its next drive after a long kickoff return to P’burg’s 45-yard line. A 17-yard and 16-yard pass set up a seven-yard touchdown run when the Farmer running back shook off several tackling attempts to score. The PAT kick was missed and P’burg led 7-6 with 7:17 left in the half.
A nice tackle for a five-yard loss by Patch Day and Friday Johnson’s sack for a loss of 14 yards gave P’burg the ball back before a Genovese interception was followed on the next play by Union which fumbled the ball away.
Genovese Returns
Genovese completed five passes as the Stateliners penetrated as far down as Union’s 13-yard line late in the second quarter before the drive was halted by Genovese’s second interception of the game.
Genovese finished 13-for-18 for 199-yards with Burgess catching four of those passes for a career-high 103 yards. P’burg totaled 396 yards from scrimmage including 197 from its running game. The Phillipsburg defense held Union (4-4) to 205 yards – 70 rushing and 135 passing. Senior linebacker Marvelous Shabi led the ‘Liners with six tackles.
The Stateliners close out the regular season against East Brunswick (0-8) at home on Friday.
