POMPANO BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A surprising visitor has made itself at home in a Pompano Beach neighborhood, and residents are concerned about its proximity to their homes.
A crocodile has been spotted lurking in a canal near Northeast 19th Street and Northeast 28th Terrace, venturing out during high tide, possibly in search of food.
Cellphone video recorded on Sunday captured the reptile with its mouth wide open as it sunned itself on a dock.
7News cameras later captured the crocodile for the second day in a row as it swam in the same area.
Gina, who spoke with 7News on Saturday, said she couldn’t believe her eyes when she first noticed the creature in the water near Northeast 19th Street and 28th Terrace earlier in the week.
“The whole crocodile came out from underneath the dock during high tide, and the mullet went running, so he was maybe looking for some fish,” said Gina.
Concerned for her neighbors’ safety, Gina called 7News to alert the community. She said the crocodile has stuck around.
“He’s come up a few times there — was sunning himself, floating in the water,” she said.
“It’s just crazy,” said another resident.
This recent crocodile sighting follows another incident just last week when a crocodile was seen in the Atlantic near the Pompano Pier, leading to the temporary closure of the beach.
While it’s uncertain whether this is the same crocodile, residents like Gina are ready to see it move on.
“It’s scary with the high tide. We’ve got the king tide here, so he can climb up over the dock and get into anybody’s backyard,” said Gina.
High tides have raised fears that the crocodile could potentially climb over docks and enter residents’ backyards, prompting concerns for both human safety and the well-being of local animals.
“We just want everyone to be safe and all our animals to be safe,” said another concerned resident.
Residents are eager for a resolution to ensure everyone’s safety, and they hope the unexpected guest finds a new home soon.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) spoke with Gina, saying that they are monitoring the reptile.
As of Monday, the FWC said there are no plans to remove the crocodile at this time, but they will be conducting a site visit.
Anyone who comes in contact with the crocodile is urged to call FWC immediately at 888-404-FWCC.

Through the partnership with Hilton, Miami-based Related Group, led by Jorge Pérez and his sons, Jon Paul and Nick, and Merrimac Ventures, helmed by Dev and Nitin Motwani, will help launch Waldorf Astoria’s first-ever purely residential tower. Not only is it Waldorf Astoria’s first-ever standalone residential project, but it’s also the first Waldorf Astoria flag in Broward County.
“Pompano Beach is unique in that it's a city that has all the infrastructure and amenities you want in your hometown, with close proximity to the excitement of Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and Miami,” says Merrimac Ventures managing partner, Dev Motwani. “But it still has that quaint beach town vibe and energy that allows residents to relax and enjoy the sun, surf and sand like being on vacation all the time.”
Pompano Beach is located along the coast just north of Fort Lauderdale and will be home to other luxury developments in the near future, including a Ritz-Carlton-branded tower. Waldorf Astoria Residences Pompano Beach will be set on a two-acre oceanfront site with a 28-story tower housing 92 luxury residences, as well as a private 19-slip marina—a rarity in the region.

Residents will have full, private access to a 20,000-square-foot oceanfront pool deck with a lap pool; 200 feet of beachfront access; a beachside cafe; and wellness-focused amenities like a full-service spa, cutting-edge fitness center; and dedicated movement studios. Other amenities include a ground-floor restaurant, billiards lounge, children’s entertainment room, multi-sport simulator, and more.
Operating like a hotel, there will be pool-side service, a personal concierge, and in-resident dining. The property will also feature an assortment of museum-quality art from the world-renowned Jorge M. Perez Contemporary Art Collection. The project will be managed by Waldorf Astoria and will celebrate Waldorf Astoria’s illustrious history through many traditional nods that fans of the brand will immediately recognize.
“We spent months going over the history of the Waldorf Astoria brand, speaking with its brand ambassadors and visiting its top locations around the world—all with the goal of capturing every nuance, every subtlety, and every whisper of the brand’s timeless essence,” Pérez says. “One example I’m particularly proud of is the tower’s Peacock Alley. Built as a homage to the Peacock Alleys that grace many Waldorf Astoria properties around the world, this private, resident-only space will be the heart of the property. Officials closed down a Florida beach due to a rare sighting — a crocodile swimming near the shore.
Pompano Beach city spokesperson Sandra King told USA Today that city lifeguards were finishing a Monday morning swim when a woman on a nearby pier spotted a 9-foot crocodile swimming near the guards.
King told the outlet that the woman who spotted the giant reptile yelled to get the lifeguards' attention, allowing the guards to help their colleagues and others swimming near the crocodile to get out of the water safely.
"The lifeguards are trained for any emergency like a shark or runaway boat, but in this case, it was a crocodile," King said. "They had never experienced something like this before, but they knew what to do."

Lifeguards decided to close the beach to swimming while the crocodile loitered in the water, reopening the area on Tuesday after seeing no signs of the crocodile near the 3-mile expanse of beach.
While a crocodile in the ocean may seem like a rare sight, University of Florida endangered species researcher Frank Mazzotti told NBC 6 South Florida that it is common for crocodiles in Florida to swim out of swamps into inlets and the ocean.
He added that it wasn't "unusual" for the reptile to show up at the pier because crocodiles are "attracted to structures."

"Something like the pier will be a place for them to hide, a place for food to eat, they do that, and it's not an unusual behavior," said Mazzotti, who also noted that American crocodiles, which are native to Florida, are more docile than other breeds.
"They're not aggressive, and what they eat are crabs [and] fish," the researcher explained. "Mammals like us are not on their diet." Though he said that if someone comes upon a crocodile, they should "calmly move away."
Mazzotti told NBC 6 South Florida that there are about 2,000 American Crocodiles in South Florida, with many living near Miami-Dade and Monroe county.

Plenty of people decided to catch some sun on the sand in Pompano Beach on Monday when they spotted the reptile in the water near the pier.
Cell phone video caught the crocodile swimming closer to the shore.
“I saw a shadow and I thought ‘Man, what the heck?’ I ain’t ever seen a fish like that’,” said David, who was on the pier at the time.
On-lookers like David and others on the structure, saw the crocodile around 8 a.m. on Monday.
“His head about like this and you see his big ol’ snout,” David continued.
They shouted for swimmers to get out of the water when shortly after the “No swim” flags came up.
Pompano Beach Ocean Rescue made sure beachgoers stayed clear of the potential danger, while word of the spotting spread on-shore.
“That’s wild,” said one man. “I did see the video, I mean hey, this is their home, it’s expected. They’d be coming up to the people, people think it’s not true, but it’s true.”
One woman went down to see the action as soon as she heard.
“I came down to find it…” she said. “A little scary.”
Many heard about the incident but hadn’t seen the video yet.
“My God man, that’s bigger than me,” said another man.
Others couldn’t believe what they saw.
“Right here in Pompano? Come on, are you serious?” said another woman, reacting to the footage. “Oh my goodness.”
As the reptile hung around all day, enjoying the shoreline all to itself, some swore they’d never take a dip in the water again.
“With the crocodile? No more man, thanks for letting me know,” continued the woman.
Others felt validated for why they don’t usually dive in.
“Yeah I don’t really go in anyway, I just go in up to here,” a woman said as she pointed to her legs. “My husband goes in though, so he won’t go in today… We want all his limbs intact.”
A not-so-common spotting of a seawater crocodile had left an impression that would last a lifetime.
“I’ll never forget,” said David. “In any beach area, I’ve never seen one of these, I’ve seen alligators, just looked like a mini dinosaur.”
The “No swim” flag will remain up until the crocodile moves out of Pompano Beach, which experts said could take up to one or two days.
