SUMMIT, NJ - The number-one seeded Summit High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team got three goals and five-point days each from three players -- senior captains Dylan Sebastian and John Murray, along with sophomore Daniel Flaim -- and pulled away in the second half to defeat eighth-seeded Vernon Township 15-1 on the stadium field at Tatlock Park.
The victory came on a jeez-it's-hot-and-sticky day, and improves the Maroon and White's 2022 season mark to 14-2. The 'Top now heads into the NJSIAA North Jersey, Group 2 semifinals where, at Tatlock Park on May 25, Summit will meet fifth-seeded Sparta in a contest slated to face-off at 4:30 p.m.
In contrast to their first-round matchup against River Dell, where they scored 10 goals in the opening 12 minutes, the Hilltoppers had no easy time with the feisty Vikings, leading just 1-0 at the end of the first quarter and 5-0 at the halftime break. Surely, despite leading by five, the game -- unlike Summit's playoff-opener with the Golden Hawks -- was far from being tucked away safely in the Frosty Frigidaire at the contest's halfway point.

The result sort of was already settled after two quarters, as it seemed only a matter of time before the boys from the 07901 would shift their offense into a higher gear and, more importantly, it looked darned-near impossible that Vernon Township was going to find a way to score five goals against a dialed-in Summit defense that was being, well, a dialed-in Summit defense -- stingy, aggressive, and fond of dispossessing their opponent.
This prognosis was put to the test early in the third quarter when Connor Sensbach scored for the Vikings to make it 5-1, but was fully proven prophetic when the Hilltoppers rattled off the stanza's next eight goals and the final 10, in sum, of the game. In a span of 9:22, Sebastian, Flaim, Murray, junior Lucas Stocks twice, Flaim again, Sebastian again, and senior Conor St. Amant dented the twine and that, as they say, was that.
Seniors Brian Parella and John Morano scored in the final frame to round out the scoring. Morano's goal, the first of his Hilltopper Varsity career, drew perhaps the biggest cheer of the day.
Senior Will Kein (4), relieved by junior Jake Penner (2), shared time in the Summit goal and the duo were credited with a combined six saves. Conner Mullane had seven stops in net for Vernon Township.
Hilltopper FOGOs senior Matt Erman (7-of-9) and junior Jake Rainero (8-of-11) were again strong, winning 15 out of 20 face-offs. Summit owned the stats tussle as well, outshooting the Vikings 32-12 and dominating in ground balls (34-14).

VERNON — The township has received a $3.4 million federal grant to expand sewer service in the business area and along Route 94, a move which will attract businesses and allow existing homes to connect.
The move, announced jointly last week by Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-5, Mayor Howard Burrell and other town officials, will cut the cost of developing properties already zoned for business, and provide access for homeowners in the area who have private septic systems which are nearing the end of useful life and will need replacing.
Burrell noted that the increased availability of septic sewers will also improve water quality. The western half of town overlooks the Wallkill River valley which includes the Wallkill River Wildlife Refuge, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
About half of the town's designated Town Center area along Route 94 already has sewer service, with this grant funding bring sewer mains and laterals to the remainder of the area already designated as a sewer service area by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The new lines will move south on Route 94 toward Mott Drive. The town has applied to the DEP to designate areas north and south of Town Center as sewer service areas and this project will provide capacity for those areas to be served in the future.
The $3.4 million-plus grant will bring sewer service to all areas within the sewer service area (town center) which are not currently served by sewer. That area moves along Route 94 south towards Mott Drive and northward beyond the intersection of Route 95 and County Route 515. This Town Center area includes both residential and commercial properties, some of which are vacant and/or undeveloped due to lack of utilities.
"Vernon will now be an even more attractive location for businesses of all sizes to call home, which will make life better for our residents and increase the town’s revenue — helping ease the property tax burden off of families," said Gottheimer.
Both the mayor and congressman noted that commercial development is held back because of the expense of installing private septic systems which not only have routine maintenance expenses, but will need to be replaced at some point in the future.
The existing sewer service flows to a pump station at the end of Black Creek Drive. From there, sewage is pumped to the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority treatment plant in Hamburg.
Gottheimer also mentioned the environmental benefits as well as economic advantages. "Home values will likely increase after being connected to sewers," he said.
From a business standpoint, the cost to develop a property with a simple sewer hook-up is much less than designing, building and maintaining an on-site septic system.
With more attractive commercial development also comes increased commercial property tax income, which offsets the need for increases in residential property taxes.
There is also the increase in job opportunities and local retail outlets, both Burrell and Gottheimer noted.
Engineering work has already begun on the project to install the lines which will bring service to at least 75 properties.
The project also is designed to accommodate other areas outside the Town Center where Vernon has asked the state to designate as sewer service areas. If granted, as many as 500 residential properties will be able to connect to sanitary sewers, abandoning septic systems.
The proposed additional sewer service areas would stretch to the north along Route 94 toward the New York, and southward toward the McAfee section of the township.
Burrell said the lack of sewers had been "the only hinderance" to expansion and Vernon is now in position to see a growth in commercial use in the Town Center.
There are already visible indications the start of sewer construction is spurring development. At the intersection of Black Creek Drive and Route 94, near realty company "For Sale" signs, surveyor ribbons line up along property lines and potential driveways.
In addition to the congressman's help, the mayor thanked the Vernon Township Council and the Commissioners of the Vernon Township Municipal Utilities Authority for their very strong support of our municipality’s application for this funding."
After the ceremony, Burrell said the federal grant really is a team effort of federal, county and local officials and, looking at the future, he said, "and we aren't done yet."

JEFFERSON – What started out as a potential blowout victory became a matter of who would blink last.
Jefferson would have no part of a game of bluff. But the Falcons needed a last-ditch effort in a game that featured three lead changes in the fourth quarter, including two in the final 75 seconds.
Quarterback Ryan Moran found Travis Osterhout on a 14-yard slant for the game-winning touchdown with eight seconds left to cap a wild fourth quarter in Jefferson’s 43-36 comeback win over Vernon Friday in a Super Football Conference American White showdown.
It was the sixth straight win for the Falcons (2-1) against their Sussex County rivals. Vernon dipped to 1-2.
“I can’t believe it. I knew we would have to do something like this to win. It’s a dream come true. I haven’t felt this way in a while,” said Moran, who was playing in his third game as a starter. “We worked on the game-winning play all week at practice. I knew it was going to be there. I saw two linebackers blitz and I knew he [Osterhout] was going to be there. I just can’t believe he ran it in.”

The Vikings went up 13-0 in first quarter but Jefferson rallied in the second for a 21-13 lead. The game was tied at 21 by halftime, then the second-half fireworks lit up the evening sky.
Leading 36-35 with 1:15 left, it appeared Vernon was headed to its first victory over Jefferson since 2016. But Moran engineered a five-play, 75-yard drive with Osterhout hauling in a dart and weaving through the Vernon defense for the decisive score.
Vernon had taken a one-point lead when running back Gage Moskovitz scored his third TD and quarterback Derek Lazier connected with Franco Luna for a two-point conversion, his second of the night.
So many twists and turns defined the third quarter.
Jefferson took a 27-21 lead when Moran and wide receiver Jeff Evans hooked up for the second time. Vernon answered back on its next drive, eating up more than seven minutes with Moskovitz barreling over from the 1 with 15 seconds left and a 28-27 edge.
The fourth quarter started out with a bang as the Falcons reclaimed the lead when the Moran-to-Evans combination made good for a third time - this time on a 28-yard post pattern and a two-point conversion for a 35-27 lead.
“We were clicking all night. Everyone made big plays and our line got the job done,” Evans said. “There’s no one like Ryan [Moran]. We’ve been my best friends for years. It’s fun to have my friend as my quarterback.”
With the win, Jefferson remains a game behind Sparta and High Point in the SFC-American White. The Falcons have won two straight after dropping their season opener to High Point on Sept. 2.
Vernon has dropped two straight games since a season-opening win over Morris Hills.
Trailing 36-35 with 1:45 left to play following Vernon's go-ahead touchdown and two-point conversion, Moran hit receiver Jason Eisele for 43 yards on the first play of the final drive.
That put Jefferson in Vikings territory at the 42-yard line, setting up the game-winning touchdown three plays later.
Moran hit on 21 of 34 passes for 342 yards and five touchdowns.
For Vernon, Lazier finished with 140 passing yards and accounted for two touchdowns, including one in the air.
Moskovitz rushed for 172 yards on 34 carries and three touchdowns for Vernon.

VERNON — A new community partnership is providing students in one of Sussex County's largest school districts digital access to any of six public libraries in the county.
Vernon Township students in pre-K through 12th grade, as well as all district faculty members, now have a library card that allows them to check out online resources from the Sussex County Library System. The system includes the main library in Frankford and five branch libraries — including the Dorothy Henry Branch in Vernon.
The library card initiative was spearheaded by Vernon High School media specialist Michelle Aluotto, who previously worked for the county library.She said there was a need to create the partnership because many students are unaware of everything a library offers.
"I think it's important for them to realize this is a publicly available resource that they have access to," Aluotto said. "I'm a big library proponent. I love libraries, so I think everyone should know the value of a library."
The Vernon Township School District was home to 2,878 students as of the 2020-21 school year, according to data from the New Jersey Department of Education, only second in the county to Sparta, which had 3,050 students enrolled.
To access the catalog, Vernon students visit the Sussex County Library website and enter their student ID number. They can then browse all online materials available in the database, including audiobooks, language learning and information for research papers.
Aluotto said the digital card offered by the school does not allow students to rent hard copies of books or DVDs. However, they can obtain a physical card by visiting any of the six libraries and providing proof of residency in Sussex County.

The libraries' partnership with Vernon is being treated as a "pilot program" as the district tries to "work through the kinks," Aluotto said. Eventually, the goal is for the initiative to expand to as many districts as possible.
While the partnership between Vernon and the county libraries is still in its infancy, Aluotto said she has already heard some positive feedback from students and teachers in the district. She is optimistic the program will help reinvigorate the role of libraries in the community.
"I think it's going to grow into more use for the public libraries, so it's good for everybody. Everybody wins," Aluotto said.
