The New Jersey Youth Symphony’s (NJYS) top ensemble, Youth Symphony, will visit Europe from July 3 to 13 to perform five concerts in Vienna and Budapest, as well as participate in the 11th Summa Cum Laude (SCL) International Youth Festival and Competition.
All 87 members of NJYS, conducted by Jeffrey Grogan, will share the stage with Hungary’s Anima Musicae Orchestra, the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra and Austria’s Wiener Jeunesse Orchester while on tour, and join nearly 2,000 other young musicians from around the world for the SCL Festival and Competition.
NJYS is one of three U.S. ensembles traveling to Austria for the SCL Festival and the only ensemble representing New Jersey. While on tour, NJYS will perform Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Bernstein’s West Side Story Symphonic Dances and Stravinsky’s The Firebird (1919).

Taking place every July in Vienna’s two main classical concert venues, the Golden Hall of the Musikverein and the Wiener Konzerthaus, the SCL Festival offers an international experience in which young musicians speak the universal language of music, enjoy intercultural exchanges and build bridges that span continents.
The competition will be held in the prestigious Golden Hall of the Musikverein and be judged by a selection of internationally renowned professionals. On July 11, the last day of the Festival, participating groups selected by the jury will perform their best work before an international audience in the Konzerthaus.
In addition, NJYS will participate in two clinics with two conductors from the competition adjudication panel at the University of Music and Arts in Vienna.
“This is an amazing opportunity for NJYS’s students to shine once again on the international stage while representing the state of New Jersey," said NJYS Executive Director Karen Deschere. "They have worked extremely hard to prepare a demanding array of repertoire and look forward to collaborating with other talented youth from every corner of the globe.
"We were fortunate enough to tie for first place in the SCL competition in 2014, which was a huge thrill. Win or not, we know the students will have an outstanding, life-changing experience.”
The Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival was founded in 2007 and hosted by the Vienna International Association for Music and Culture Exchange. The Festival has gained the broad support of the Austrian public as well as national and international decision-makers in the fields of politics and culture.
Close ties have been established between the Festival and foreign embassies and international organizations, affording its young participants a truly international atmosphere.

Her name is Vienna Carly Savino, and she tragically passed in 2017, a few months before her 3rd birthday.
Vienna fell asleep while watching TV at home in Holmdel, and never woke up again. Her death was categorized as Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC), which is essentially SIDS Part 2, but in kids 1 – 18 years old. As a result, Vienna's mommy, Dr. Denise Wunderler, DO, FAOASM, founded a nonprofit Team Vienna 4 SUDC Awareness and co-founded The SUDC Coalition.
Wunderler, her family, community members and Team Vienna work hard to remember Vienna in unique ways, while raising funds for research and educating the world about SUDC, a virtually unknown entity in the medical community.
According to Wunderler, "The community of Holmdel has been very supportive including Bell Works in Holmdel, and the businesses within. The iconic 60-foot tower will be pink on Friday, January 20, 2023, Vienna’s favorite color."
Vienna's actual birthday is January 19, and this will be the 3rd consecutive year that the famous structure will be lit pink for the inspiring toddler.
Everyone is invited to visit OasisVRX inside Bell Works, where special Vienna roses, books, and “Songs for Vienna” music CDs will be given away in honor of Vienna. In addition, Vienna’s big sister will be selling her homemade jewelry and other items, with proceeds going to Team Vienna.
“It’s hard to believe we have celebrated 6 birthdays without her. We miss Vienna so much. Her absence is felt every single day. Child loss is a devastating journey that continues for life. We will always be a family of 5. We are thankful for all the continuous support and love shown to us by the community and the world,” commented Wunderler.
Shockingly, most physicians have never heard of SUDC, as was the case with Vienna’s parents; Dr. Wunderler and Dr. Savino. They were familiar with SIDS, which applies to thoroughly investigated unexplained deaths in babies under one-year-old. SUDC addresses ages 1 through 18 years old. Even Vienna’s genetic studies did not reveal a cause of death. As of date, there are no causes and no preventative measures known for SUDC. Limited research indicates there may be some connection to febrile seizures.

This multi-media program of lecture and music will take place at the East Brunswick Community Arts Center (721 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick) on Sunday, April 24, at 2 pm.
The program is dedicated to the late Dr. Michael Kesler, who organized this program series since its inception in 2014. "The intent of the series is to bring to light the legacy of my Jewish ancestors, prior to their annihilation during the Shoah," he said during an interview in 2018.
After his retirement in 2006, Kesler wrote three books of his and his late wife's experiences during World War II. His last book, The Remnant, was published in April 2021.

"Our aim is to commemorate and celebrate the rich historical and cultural contributions of Jewish communities," he added. "It is our way of honoring and keeping alive their legacy, so that these once-thriving civilizations from whom many among us are descended, are never forgotten."
Historian Glenn Dynner will lecture on the history and culture of Austrian Jewry. In the early 19th century, Vienna became the cultural center of western civilization. His presentation focuses on the impact of the Jewish community on the Austrian capital city.
Dynner is the author of several books, including "Men of Silk: The Hasidic Conquest of Polish Jewish Society" and "Yankel's Tavern: Jews, Liquor & Life in the Kingdom of Poland." He was a Fulbright scholar and member of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies. In 2019, he received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship to study how the Hasidic movement emerged in the early 20th century.
Following the presentation, a concert will feature classical Jewish Austrian compositions performed by an ensemble of local musicians. They will be under the direction of Dave Schlossberg, an accomplished pianist, who was awarded a Silver Medal for Outstanding Achievement from the Global Music Awards in 2021.
May Kesler, the founder of contemporary dance company Keslerdances, will lead a choreographed performance of traditional Jewish and Austrian dances.
"The Jews of Austria and Vienna Before the Holocaust" is sponsored through a partnership of the East Brunswick Public Library and the East Brunswick Arts Commission.
