raft beer continues to be increasingly popular in New Jersey. So it’s no surprise Gearblock Brewing in Waldwick is celebrating their 1-year anniversary after a successful debut in town. The craft microbrewery offers fresh varieties of quality hand-crafted ales, lagers, stouts, sours, barrel-aged beers, and more.
Gearblock Brewing boasts a 1,000-square foot tasting room and 500-square foot production area. They brew unique small batch beers as well as a few core beers. In fact, the team releases limited quantities of new beers weekly. Patrons can enjoy craft brews from the tasting room or take their favorite drinks home in a crowler. During their anniversary event from April 28 to 30, guests can enjoy live music and special beer releases.

The brewery can seat 50 guests inside. “The decor of Gearblock is a rustic vibe which features pictures from prohibition times,” says Owner and Brewer Tony Romano. Aside from the interior, they offer two outdoor seating areas in their beer garden and behind the building. Gearblock Brewing also welcomes well-behaved dogs in these areas.
The craft beers at Gearblock Brewing feature flavors from around the world. For instance, their “Fahrvergnugen” is a German Pilsner made with a classic German yeast. They also serve the “Mastretta,” which is a Mexican Lager. Meanwhile, popular beers include the “Supra Citra” – a New England Style Pale Ale – and the “Numb Hands”. The latter is a New England Style Double IPA. In particular, Tony loves their New England Style IPAs.
Gearblock Brewing doesn’t take reservations or serve food, but they do host private events. However, they encourage patrons to bring takeout or get food delivered to the tasting room. They even have local restaurant menus behind the bar. Future plans include adding a small private area for groups of 10 to 15 people, and increasing production capacity.
The inspiration for Gearblock Brewing comes form the owner’s love of cars. Gearblock is a play on words of the components under the hood of a vehicle. Specifically, the parts that harness the engine’s power and provide torque to the wheels. Without these parts, the vehicle is powerless. Gears housed in the Gearbox – aka Gearblock – have been around for centuries, much like beer.
Prior to Gearblock Brewing, Tony was an award-winning homebrewer for five years. His partner, Ron “Uncle Ronnie” Cavaliere, also homebrewed for five years. “We would often talk about our craft beers at family gatherings; and talked about how much fun it would be to open a craft brewery,” Tony says. Both Tony and Ron grew up in Bergen County. Tony and his wife even bought their first home in Waldwick, though they now live in Mahwah.

WALDWICK, NJ – For the first time, Wood-Ridge has advanced to the NJIC Football Championship game with a 21-14 overtime victory over Waldwick-Midland Park at Warrior Nation Field in Waldwick on Friday evening.
Quarterback Braden Negro snuck in on first and goal in overtime to give Wood-Ridge a 20-14 lead on their opening possession of overtime. Negro’s pass to Leo Ramirez put the Blue Devils in possession to score from about an inch a way from the Waldwick goal line. Kledji Elezaj nailed the extra point straight through the uprights, for a 21-14 lead.
It was a big kick for Elezaj, who had a chance to win the game with a 37-yard kick with five second left in the game. His kick had the distance, but was wide left.

“That miss was not on Kledji,” said Wood-Ridge head coach Joe Cutrona. “The snap was bad, threw the timing off on the kick. It had the distance.“
What also was important was the play Elezaj made from his defensive line position in overtime, sacking Waldwick quarterback Anthony Marco for a seven-yard loss on third down, to set up Waldwick with a fourth and fifteen to keep their hopes alive.
Needing to reach the 15 for a first down, Waldwick choose to throw it deep. Marco’s pass to the left corner of the end zone was broken up by Ramirez, Tenzin Gelek and James Masucci, giving Wood-Ridge the victory.
The way the game started, it did not look like overtime was in the offing for Wood-Ridge. Waldwick’s offense was dominant in its opening possession, marching 65 yards in nine plays, capped off Kevin Davidson’s one yard plunge into the end zone to take an early 6-0 lead. Bryce Hamilton’s extra point was good.
“We are a second half team,” Cutrona said after the game. “We just had to get our defense going.”
In the second quarter, Negro did exactly that, coming up with an interception of Marco on the first play of the quarter. From that point on, the Wood-Ridge defense had the better of the Waldwick offense.
But Wood-Ridge’s offense was not moving the ball on the Waldwick defense, and was not able to take advantage of that turnover, nor a fumbled punt recovered by Jaydin Punt. Another punt was later mishandled by Waldwick that was recovered by Wood-Ridge, but the officials ruled that the Waldwick punt returner did not touch the ball and did not award the Blue Devils the ball.
Despite opportunities for both teams., it remained with Waldwick up 7-0 at halftime.
Waldwick had the second half kickoff, but punted to the Wood-Ridge 40, and Wood-Ridge’s offense immediately capitalized.
Brendan Pollio carried for two yards, and Negro hit Christian Hutchison for a 17 yard gain. Picking up the tempo on the Warrior defense, Negro rushed for 31 yards down to the 11, and on the next play, went up the middle on a quarterback draw, to cut the lead to 7-6. Elazaj’s kick tied the score with 7:01 remaining in the third quarter.
The Blue Devils struck again at the beginning of the fourth quarter, as Negro hit Antonio Loyola in the left flat for a 40 yard catch and run to give Wood-Ridge their first lead, 13-7. Elezaj once again nailed the extra point, to give Wood-Ridge a 14-7 lead.
Waldwick went on an 18-play drive that chewed up most of the fourth quarter to tie the game. The drive had two controversial calls, both on fourth down conversions. With just under seven minutes remaining in the game, Marco picked up three yards on fourth and three, reaching the Waldwick 15 while fumbling backwards out of bounds.
The officials ruled Marco down, placing the ball on the stripe of the 15-yard line, giving Waldwick four more downs with the first down. Three plays later, on third and five, Hamilton gained four plus yards, bringing out the chains for a measurement. On fourth and less than a yard, Marco was stuffed by the Wood-Ridge defense. The ball was marked short of the five-yard line, and once again the chains were brought out.
Despite not making the five-yard line, the chains had Waldwick with a first down.
Wood-Ridge’s defense came up big once again, Davidson was thrown for a four-yard loss on first down. Following a one-yard run by Sean Murray and incomplete pass, Waldwick was once again facing a fourth down with the game on the line. Marco hit Murray on a pass in the left flat for a touchdown, and Hamilton’s kick was good, and the game was tied with 1:41 remaining.
Wood-Ridge tried to end it in regulation, with Negro running and passing to get the ball across midfield. With 11 seconds left, Negro hit Gelek for a 15 yard gain, setting up Elezaj’s 37-yard field goal that sailed wide left.
“I am proud as hell of you guys,“ Cutrona told his team after the game. “We still have one more game to come, a long way to go, we have to keep getting better.”

Bombay Hut has been a fan favorite Indian restaurant in town for a decade. After 10 years, they had the opportunity to relocate into a larger location in the same area. As immigrants to the United States, owner Neha Garcia and her parents moved to the town in 1988. Garcia grew up in Waldwick and now raises her own family there.

Most patrons will immediately notice the sweet smell of authentic Indian spices drifting out of the kitchen. Bombay Hut makes everything from scratch, including their unique spice blends. Neha describes the spot’s interior as “unique, warm, and rustic.” Meanwhile, the menu offers “homecooked, comfort food. Enjoy rich, aromatic ingredients with a hint of spice.”
Neha is originally from Mumbai (Bombay) India, so Bombay Hut mostly serves dishes from northern and central India. In particular, the menu offers new style platters, tandoori treasures / barbecue, and authentic curry dishes. Chicken tikka masala is a fan favorite. But Neha’s favorite dishes are butter chicken, cheese and garlic naan, Alu Tikki Chaat tandoori chicken, and chicken over rice. The butter chicken is served in a creamy tomato and cashew nut sauce. Bombay Hut is a family business originally founded by Neha’s father, who passed away in 2022. In fact, her father owned the first hand cart in Mumbai, India, in the early 1980s. “Being naturally entrepreneurial, he wanted to bring his experience and knowledge to the Indian restaurant industry in the United States,” Neha says. She has been running the business since 2014, continuing his legacy through their menu and service. “We treat our customers like our family and make sure every meal is made with perfection.”
