Kmart is leaving the Garden State for good this fall.
The struggling department store chain plans to close its last New Jersey location in Westwood in September or October 2023, according to NorthJersey.com.
The store at 700 Broadway in Bergen County has already begun its liquidation sale.
This final location in Westwood Plaza follows a string of closures across the state as the chain attempts to stay afloat in the age of online consumerism.
New Jersey had 11 stores before Sears Holdings Corporation, which operates Kmart, closed them over the past five years. The most recent Kmart closings were in Avenel in 2022, and Kearny and Belleville in 2021.
Many of the closed New Jersey Kmarts have been converted in the past few years into other popular stores, like ShopRite, Target, Marshalls and HomeGoods, as well as entertainment complexes.
Transformco, which owns Sears Holdings Corporations, set plans to shutter 45 Kmart locations in 2019. Sears, which operates Kmart, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy a year before.
The United States used to have more than 2,000 Kmart stores. Once this New Jersey location closes, there will be only two Kmart locations nationwide: Kmart Miami and Kmart Bridgehampton in Long Island, N.Y.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (PIX11) — What can teachers say and not say in the classroom?
The issue was debated Thursday night in the Westwood Regional School District after a previous controversy in which the superintendent banned Pride flags and signs from school property.
Members of the Westwood Regional School Board heard public comments at a meeting that included proposed changes to the district’s policy “P2240 Controversial Issues.”
Teacher Kelly O’Connor questioned how the superintendent would have time to approve conversations and asked the board who determines what controversy is.
Joseph McCallister, a former Westwood board member with two children in the district, told PIX11 he’s concerned about the vague language.
“As soon as we’re trying to micromanage what happens in a classroom, as far as I’m concerned, you’ve crossed the line,” McAllister said.
The grassroots group, New Jersey Public Education Coalition, organized a group to attend the meeting.
Members of the school board and the superintendent did not comment on the proposed changes during the public comment portion of Thursday night’s meeting.
After the meeting, the New Jersey Public Education Coalition released the following statement.
Although we are disappointed that the Westwood-Washington Township Board of Education voted 7 to 2 to move the proposed revision of the ‘Controversial Issues’ policy forward to second reading with absolutely no discussion or comment, it was not unexpected. This Board of Education has already shown their ‘stripes’ when they issued an edict prohibiting Pride flags and Pride signs at their last meeting.
While this board claims to be taking action for ‘the children’ and for ‘parent’s rights,’ in actuality this board, as a result of changes in composition over the last two election cycles, has become pawns of a right-wing political agenda.
Tonight, this board moved forward on placing restrictions on their educator’s the right to express their own opinions in the classroom. Even when the educator discloses the fact to the students that it is their own opinion and the teacher presents other viewpoints.
Instead, this board moved forward on a policy that says that teachers are ‘prohibited’ from expressing their own opinions. It is designed to send a message to these teachers that the board does not trust them.
The board action falls right in line with the right wing radical conspiracy theories claiming that teachers are secretly pushing a ‘woke’ agenda in the classrooms.
And of course, we can expect no less when James O’Keefe, the disgraced founder of Project Veritas and a former resident of Westwood, appeared in this same room last month offering to give parents hidden cameras for their children to take into the classroom and ‘spy’ on teachers.
Notably, one member of the board, Douglas Cusato, even applauded on tape when O’Keefe made this offer.
The quality of public education is no longer the foremost concern of this board. Their actions will prevent the free expression and exercise of ideas in the classroom, a foundational element of our public school system. We want students to be exposed to a multitude of ideas and opinions so they learn how to evaluate information and draw their own conclusion.
This is exactly why politics does not belong in our public schools or on our Boards of Education. Board members take a sworn oath, under God, and are subject to a Code of Ethics that requires them to provide the best education for ‘all’ children and to make the interest of children first.
Clearly, those members of this board who voted in favor of moving the provision to second reading , and probable passage at the next meeting, have violated both their oath and in my opinion, the Code of Ethics. Additionally, this board sent a clear message to their educators that the board does not stand behind the teachers educational decisions in the classroom and that teachers can expect this Board to be ‘looking over their shoulder’ at every turn. Effective public education cannot operate under those circumstances.This is not the job description of a school board. This is the job of a superintendent and the administration who are the education professionals hired by the Board to run the schools. Professionals who are and should be immune from political bias or agendas. And frankly, many board members, although well meaning, just do not have the educational experience or training to understand the difference in job description and duties.

Just as Pride Month begins, there's an uproar in a New Jersey borough after the district superintendent ordered a Pride lawn sign removed from school grounds.
The controversy centers on Westwood Regional Middle School in Westwood, a town where the LGBTQ signs depicting the Pride flag are displayed outside of homes. But around the corner at the school, the same signs were ordered to be taken down just a day after it was placed on the lawn.
"This is something that’s real, it’s something that’s OK," said high school senior MacKenzie Fox. "Just to have a sign out there tells us this is a safe space. That we do belong and our sexuality and our gender, whatever it is, is valid."
Fox is a student representative to the school board. She started an online petition asking the superintendent to bring back the sign and allow it on school grounds.
"I know I have the support of my teachers, students and classmates, I just wish the administration would do the same," said Fox.
So far, more than 1,000 people have signed the petition. Fox says the lawn sign was placed outside the middle school last week in preparation for Pride Month.
"He had told them the signs violated the flag policy and he has been the one to tell the principal to take them down," Fox said.
Last month, Westwood’s Board of Education passed a policy only allowing the American and New Jersey state flag to be displayed outside of schools. The policy does not prevent Pride flags from being displayed inside — as evidenced by multiple Pride flags being seen hanging on school windows on Friday.
Michael Pontillo, Westwood School Board President commented on the decision limiting what flags can be displayed last month during a board meeting.
"Nobody is up here saying to a principal ‘No, that flag will not fly in the school.’ Last year, there were flags all over the school and there’s nobody that’s going to prevent that from happening again this year," said Pontillo.
When reached, Interim Superintendent Kenneth Rota did not comment. The new policy doesn’t address banners or signs outside, but Fox told NBC New York that the superintendent told her a sign which depicts a flag falls in the same category.
"Lawn signs are not flags and it should not apply at all," Fox said.
The school board president told NBC New York over the phone that he deferred all questions to the superintendent for comment.

Pride flags and signs will not be permitted outside school buildings in the Westwood Regional School District, the superintendent reiterated in an email sent to parents and the community last week.
Officials in the Bergen County school district restated the district’s position in the message, which was sent weeks after a pride sign supporting the LGBTQ community was removed from school property.
In a letter sent Friday addressing district updates and new hires, Westwood Regional School District Superintendent Jill Mortimer said she believes only the national and state flags should be flown outside school buildings.
“Please note, I have no objection to the Pride flag, and I am in no way ‘banning’ it. That narrative is incorrect,” she wrote in italics. “The High School displays a large Pride flag in the lobby of the school every June.”
Mortimer said her decision is also based on legal advice from the district’s attorney. She doesn’t want to expose the district to potential costly legal fees, she added.
Pride lawn signs will also not be permitted outside the district’s schools. Signs outside of school buildings should only be signage that advertises or relates to school events, Mortimer said.
“Many people and groups request us to advertise something for them, yet we are judicious in our approach,” she said. “Again, my opinions are not grounded in negative feelings regarding any flag, sign, individual, or group.”
Westwood Regional has six schools and serves roughly 2,770 students, according to state data. It includes students from Westwood and Washington Township.
Mortimer’s letter comes a few weeks after a pride sign was removed from outside the district’s middle school. Officials said the sign violated the district’s new flag policy, which says only the American flag and New Jersey state flag are allowed to be displayed on or above school property.
Mackenzie Fox, a senior and student representative to the school board, started a Change.org petition after the LGBTQ lawn sign was removed from outside the school.
Then-interim superintendent Kenneth Rota told Fox he believed the intent of the school board’s policy “is that there will not be any signs/banners/flags outside the schools, on school property with the exception of the American flag and the state flag of New Jersey,” he wrote in an email. “If the BOE directs me otherwise, I will comply.”
Last Monday, Rota resigned from his position, effective immediately. In a letter announcing the change, Mortimer said she returned to her job from medical leave and replaced Rota.
It’s unclear if Rota’s resignation was related to the pride sign incident or other controversies in the district. Rota did not respond to a request to comment after his resignation.

Kimchi Smoke, one of the top barbecue spots in North Jersey, if not New Jersey, is closing its Westwood location.
Owner and pitmaster Robert Austin Cho announced on Instagram that the near seven-year-old spot will close in the next two months.
"We thank everyone who has visited us, supported us, dined in, took out, bought merchandise and sauce, ordered catering, wrote reviews, shared photos, posted photos...," he said. "There are just so many great things that happened."
Cho said that he will be concentrating on catering and its food truck, and that he has already signed up for several big barbecue events. He also pointed out that the Ridgewood location on Godwin Avenue is still open and that fans of his Westwood shop will "only have to travel six miles" to enjoy his award-winning brisket, pastrami, ribs and more.
He could not be reached for comment.
Cho originally opened his popular Southern-style Korean barbecue in a teeny space on Church Street in Bergenfield in 2016 but outgrew it quickly. In less than a year Kimchi Smoke moved into much larger quarters on Westwood's Center Avenue. Cho opened his Ridgewood location in 2022.
