WYCKOFF, NJ — A Wyckoff senator's proposed bill to allow parents to voluntarily surrender newborn children at New Jersey hospitals, no questions asked, is advancing.
Sen. Kristin Corrado's sponsored legislation to expand the Safe Haven Infant Protection Act (enacted in 2000) to include hospitals as "acceptable drop-off locations" was approved 8-0 last week by a Senate committee and is advancing through the legislative pipeline.
"More newborns are being safely surrendered as awareness of the state's Safe Haven law increases," Corrado said. "Although it is a difficult decision for any parent to give up their newborn, safe havens have provided an alternative for parents to drop-off infants rather than putting their child in harm’s way."
So far in 2023, four infants have been surrendered to hospital E.R.s; police or fire stations; or ambulance, first aid or rescue squads (as allowed by the Safe Haven law); this number equals the total given up in all of 2022, according to state officials.
Once surrendered, the New Jersey Department of Children and Families' child protection division "immediately take(s) the (newborn) into custody and place(s) the infant in a foster or pre-adoptive home," pursuant to the Safe Haven law, DCF said on its website.
If enacted, Corrado's amendment would give parents an additional "life-saving option" to anonymously surrender their infants after giving birth by expanding the Safe Haven law to include licensed general hospitals.
"Giving parents more options to safely surrender their newborn," Corrado said, "not only protects more infants from an otherwise dangerous or deadly situation, it prevents parents from being prosecuted as well."
To wit, the proposed amendment stipulates that it would be an affirmative defense to prosecution for abandonment of a child, if the infant is left at a hospital (such as the other aforementioned drop-off locations) up to 30 days after birth.
Corrado's legislation would also protect hospital employees who accept the surrendered babies "in good faith," as per the provisions of the Safe Haven law, the senator said.
As a state policy, the Department of Children and Families cannot comment on pending legislation. However, a spokesperson said, DCF has saved 86 infants in New Jersey.
"NJ's Safe Haven law is critically important," spokesperson Jason Butkowski said in a statement.

PARAMUS, N.J. – Officials from Bergen Community College and Party City, the global celebrations retailer, recently collaborated on a pair of June events that provided learning opportunities for the College’s students and company personnel.
The first event brought students from Bergen’s LatinxCEO experiential education program and the Office of Multicultural Services and Activities to Party City’s global headquarters in Woodcliff Lake for a day of hands-on learning. Party City executives led a panel discussion on tips for succeeding in business and also sponsored interview workshops for the students. The College launched LatinxCEO earlier this year to provide minority students with the resources, skills and experience they need to challenge underrepresentation in the workplace. The program combines two priorities outlined in the College’s strategic goals: creating new workforce development initiatives and enhancing its approach to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
Just two days later, Bergen and Party City switched roles – this time, the College provided an educational experience for company staff. Party City leaders tabbed Bergen Dean of Research and Institutional Effectiveness Tonia McKoy, Ed.D., to serve as the keynote speaker at the company’s Juneteenth celebration at its headquarters, seeking to raise awareness about the federal holiday that now includes decorations for purchase in the company’s retail stores. Before a crowd of hundreds of Party City staffers, McKoy detailed the history of Juneteenth and discussed why DEI initiatives create belongingness at organizations. She also encouraged those in attendance to explore the College’s offerings and visit the institution’s main campus “just nine miles down the road.”
The College’s Linda Caruso worked with Executive Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Development Cinzia D’Iorio to create LatinxCEO and establish the relationship with Party City officials.

WYCKOFF, NJ — Wyckoff elementary students are researching to gain valuable insights about the world.
Students in the Discovery (gifted and talented) Program, led by June Weissman, have been busy with creative projects that inspire and push them to explore, school district officials said.
As part of the program, eligible third graders are researching the "diverse cultures" of Australia and New Zealand. Meanwhile, fourth graders have crafted parodies of Lewis Carroll's famous poem, "Jabberwocky", and fifth graders are developing science fiction fantasies to imagine life in the year 2223.
In a monthly newsletter called Weissman's Window, the program specialist further explained the key aspects of the projects.
The third graders, for example, are exploring the island, country and continent of Australia, and making stops in New Zealand along the way, the Discovery newsletter said.
"Students have considered recurrent themes in aboriginal cultures," the newsletter said. "We have explored origin legends and written our own."
Fourth graders, after analyzing the poetic features of "Jabberwocky," recreated the poem in a way that imitates the original though also populates it with their own made-up characters.
"Students experienced a variety of illustrated versions of the original poem to demonstrate the effect of art on the meanings we construct," Weissman said.
Fifth graders researched topics including cryonics, terraforming, artificial intelligence, and time travel, all to serve as a springboard for "collaborative science fiction fantasies," for which they will act out through an interpretive film that will be judged for the "Space-cademy" Awards.
"Settings may be underground lava tubes on Mars, floating space colonies, underwater dwellings, mile-high megastructures, clouds of Venue — the only options are limited by their research and their imagination," the program teacher said.
"Students are honing many skills, not the least of which is ownership of their learning and accountability to a team," Weissman added.

Paper Mill Playhouse, recipient of the Regional Theatre Tony Award, has selected dozens of students to be a part of the program. Members of the competitive Conservatory who earned coveted spots in the Senior (ages 15-18), Junior Plus (ages 13-14), and Junior (ages 10-12) companies will be directed and choreographed by Paper Mill Playhouse’s professional artistic staff in the original concert.
"A show unlike any other produced by Paper Mill Playhouse, this special concert features 122 talented young performers, including Rising Star Award winners and nominees," said the organizers. "The 2023 New Voices Concert showcases the rock musicals that changed the landscape of the Broadway industry and became instant classics in the process, drawing on songs from Hair, Godspell, Rock of Ages, Dear Evan Hansen, Rent and Hamilton and many more famous jukebox musical hits."

WYCKOFF, NJ — A Wyckoff father of a son with a motor speech disorder is passionate about helping his own child and other children find their voice.
Brennan Woods, a dad to a 6-year-old with childhood apraxia of speech, has joined the board of a national nonprofit strengthening support for children with the disorder and for their families.
"It was encouraging to see the progress (my son) has made over the past few years, and, to the extent that I can help others realize that progress, I want to do that," Woods said in an interview.
"I don't have much nonprofit experience, nor am I a speech-language pathologist," he said. "But I am a doer and a father who wants to help."
During the day, the father of three is a vice president at Goldman Sachs, and although his regular work, he said, is "wildly different," he is a "roll up your sleeves" kind of guy.
"Fundamentally, I just want to help in whatever way I can."
Before becoming a board member, Woods participated in "Walks for Apraxia" organized through the nonprofit, and this year, he is leading one of these "walks" in Northern New Jersey at an upcoming date not yet determined. He has raised more than $5,800 for the fundraising initiative so far.
He started walking, he said, to support an organization that for months had provided him with resources to help him and his family learn about apraxia, and had offered support groups to help him feel not so alone in the journey.
"It is helpful to have information for myself or my family, or to use in advising teachers or others working with (my son)," he said. "There is also a comfort in knowing that this is something other parents experience."
Woods had found Apraxia Kids in 2018 — the year his son was diagnosed — as he was searching online for resources on CAS. He said that year was especially tough for his then-2-year-old son, who already was undergoing a lot of social-emotional development — and that coupled with the diagnosis was "frustrating and, frankly, heartbreaking," for him as a father.
"(My son) is an incredibly social kid, and seeing him have trouble expressing himself socially in connecting with peers or family members is disheartening," he said. "As a parent, you want your kids to be happy and to have the best possible childhood experience, and that was hard on us as a family."
At 6 years old, Woods' son is in speech therapy yet still has "a long way to go," the father said. Although there is a "learning curve" in figuring out how to work with a nonprofit, he added he wants to help the organization grow and develop to assist more children and families.
