The City of Sarasota is one step closer to choosing a final art piece for the US 41-Fruitville Road roundaboutin the heart of downtown Sarasota.
The initial vote at yesterday’s City of Sarasota’s Public Art Committee meeting was tied: two votes for Dancing Clouds, by Shan Shen Sheng, and two for Where the Sun Always Shines, by Sujin Lim, with no votes for Snowbirds, by Mark Reigelman. A local student taking active role in government (STAR) was not present to participate in the vote, which resulted in a second round of voting after a conversation about each contender’s submission. The second round resulted in a majority vote for Where the Sun Always Shines.
Three public speakers attended and noted they had issues with Reigelman’s Snowbirds since the birds depicted were juncos, which are not local to the region.
Another speaker who lived nearby pointed out that Dancing Clouds, a glass-based sculpture, would be blunted by the dust that blows in from westerly winds, thus demanding more upkeep.
Senior city planner Mary Davis Wallace, who oversees the city’s public art plan, reminded committee members that their recommendation would go before city commissioners for final approval and that they would have to defend their choice. “If we don’t articulate this choice to the commission, they may reject it again,” she warned.
What she may be referring to is the previous rejection of Lim’s coral sculpture submission. In April of last year, commissioners rejected the public art committee’s recommendation of Dwell—a colorful, coral-shaped sculpture by Lim—citing a lack of relevance. At the time, commissioner Hagen Brody said, “Coral has no relation to the Gulf Coast,” and added that the art “should bear some relation to our region or community.”
Lim’s new sculpture is a symbol of the sun, which, she wrote in her submission narrative, “represents what people love so much about living in Florida: warmth, joy, rest, and growth.” The beams reference the suspension cables of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which she connected to the idea of “coming home,” as a driver crossing the bridge might while on their way home to Sarasota. “The sculpture attempts to represent the human experience with nature by symbolically bringing the human habitat into the middle of the natural world,” her submission read.
Where the Sun Always Shines will go before city commissioners later this summer for final approval. The public art sculpture will reach roughly 20 feet in height and have a budget of $250,000.

An empty plot of land on Fruitville Road in downtown Sarasota, surrounded by condos, commercial buildings and construction sites prepping for more, looks downright suspicious in the current market. Especially since much of what’s left of open spaces is getting quickly filled in with new high-rises, like the upcoming condo project, The Edge, headed for the corner of Fruitville Road and Cocoanut Avenue.
But across the street, after five years of 1351 Fruitville Road lying vacant, the empty lot will soon cast those suspicions aside and conform to its neighbors.
Perhaps the word “soon” is presumptuous. Tom Bradley, president of real estate investment firm ERES Capital, that bought the roughly .6-acre lot, says it’s too early to know when they’ll break ground on the condo project. He added it’s also too early to divulge a price range “since the market is moving so quickly. We’re not ready to put out prices just yet,” he says. The deal closed in December of last year for $3.2 million.
What we do know is that it will house roughly 25 units, and be a minimum of five stories high. A builder and architect have yet to be chosen, and presales will kick off sometime later in the year.
The project will back onto the Rosemary District and is less than a mile from all the high-rise hullabaloo headed to the downtown Sarasota bayfront, offering residents prime location amenities by being close to all the dining, shopping and entertainment one might want.
Previously headquartered in Colorado since 2014, the project is a first for ERES in Sarasota, and the firm is setting up another headquarters here. It’s full circle for Bradley, who spent his formative years attending The Out-Of-Door Academy on Siesta Key, where his three kids are now enrolled.
“I always wanted to figure out a way to get back to Sarasota,” Bradley says. “We’re focusing on places we want to live and work and markets with high growth. Sarasota became a prime target for both. It really has all the things the big city might offer but still has that smaller town feel.”
Bradley also revealed there’s a second project in the works for ERES on the Gulf Coast, but “we can’t share too much on that one yet,” he says.

Real estate development firm The Collier Companies recently purchased 13.2 acres for $5.4 million in a cash deal that closed on Aug. 23.
It’s part of Sarasota County’s Fruitville Initiative, which was approved in 2014 following workshops with residents and a 2010 charette. The goal of the initiative is to encourage economic development and growth on 420 acres along both sides of Fruitville Road east of I-75 to create a gateway into Sarasota. As part of the deal, The Collier Companies will also be building four roadways and gifting them back to the county.
Although the apartment project site is near the county-owned Celery Fields, an important bird and wildlife habitat, no community meetings were required through the planning process.
“Because we’re not abutting them, we didn’t receive any pushback,” says Shannon Lee, vice-president of development for The Collier Companies.
Yet to be named, the apartment complex will comprise of three- and four-story buildings, six in all, and offer 130 one-bedroom apartments, 114 two-bedroom apartments, and 56 three-bedroom apartments. It will also have a separate clubhouse, resort-style pool, fitness center, mailroom with package lockers and a pet spa. The style will be “modern and simple. We want to fit in with the area,” Lee says.
The apartment project will be located on the south side of Fruitville Road, near the Fruitville Public Library, and across from Citria, a new, 300-unit luxury apartment complex that opened this summer where a 800 square-foot one-bedroom apartment is listed for $1,849 a month.
The Colliers Companies’ project will cost roughly $70 million to build, but it’s too early to determine unit pricing, says Lee. “We won’t be renting for two years,” she says. “Rents have been going up so high and fast we’re trying to see where they’re going to level out first.”
She expects the project to break ground during the first quarter of 2022 and estimates 16 to 18 months for construction.
Sarasota County rent rates have been exploding. According to data from Apartment List, a national online marketplace for residential, long-term rentals, the last time they dipped was in June of 2020, and they’ve been on a consistent, steep incline since September 2020. The median price for a one-bedroom apartment in Sarasota County was $1,505 last month, compared to $1,142 at the same time last year. For a two-bedroom in Sarasota County, the rent was $1,923 last month; last year September, it was $1,459—a roughly 24 percent increase year-over-year for both one and two-bedroom apartments. In an August interview, Igor Popov, chief economist at Apartment List, said, “We’re getting used to seeing these numbers, but 20 percent or more growth in a year is not normal.”
Attracted to what’s in store with the Quay Sarasota and overall area growth, the Fruitville purchase is the first time the Gainesville-based the firm has set foot in the Sarasota Market.
“We look forward to doing more deals in Sarasota. I have my eye on a couple things downtown,” Lee says.

Heading to the Fruitville Road Target for a little retail therapy anytime soon? You can now grab a sweet treat from a new bakery—one that’s singularly dedicated to the humble bundt cake.
Nothing Bundt Cakes is owned by Kelly Erdmann, who fell so in love with the Las Vegas-based franchise’s cakes that she decided to open an outpost of her own. After living in the Midwest for years, Erdmann, who’s been visiting Southwest Florida since she was a child, thought Sarasota would make the perfect spot for a Nothing Bundt Cakes location.
“I was living in Naperville, Illinois, about eight years ago, and I fell in love with the cake and the concept,” Erdmann says. “My husband and I moved to Naples, and one day, I was talking to my husband and said, ‘What do you think about opening a Nothing Bundt Cakes?’ We have friends and family in Sarasota and we’ve always loved the area—so we moved here in January, and we’re loving it. With this being the main corridor going into downtown and the islands, we thought this was a nice, central hub; it’s a major intersection with major anchor stores here to support us. I think this is the best location right now.”
The bakery is located between Five Guys and Chipotle on Fruitville Road. Inside it’s bright and airy, decorated in shades of blue and yellow. Bundt cakes of all sizes and flavors—from full-size 8- to 10-inch cakes to mini-bundts to bite-size “bundtinis”—fill the bakery case, and the store showcases the various ways the cakes can be used (options include tiered wedding cakes, bundtlet bundles and even gender reveal cakes). Every cake is topped with thick white ribbons of Nothing Bundt Cakes’ signature cream cheese frosting.
“There’s really nothing like this in the area,” Erdmann says. “We bring something different, something homestyle that reminds you of your childhood. And we have so many options for every celebration, from the smallest to the biggest.”
Bundts come in nine standard flavors, including red velvet, chocolate, vanilla and lemon, with a rotating special flavor (currently lemon-raspberry). Cakes are baked on-site, and the result is a fluffy, moist cake that’s nicely complemented by the tang of the cream cheese frosting. And emphasizing the focus on celebration, Nothing Bundt Cakes sells a variety of accoutrements to go with its cakes, from colorful candles to birthday cards to cheeky coffee cups and flatware. The staff is friendly and helpful, and samples are readily available.
Nothing Bundt Cakes’ official grand opening and ribbon-cutting is August 3 at 10 a.m. On Friday, August 4, the shop will donate 20 percent of its sales to Girls Inc., and on Saturday, August 5, the first 50 guests who come into the store will receive one free bundtlet per month for a year (there’ll also be face-painting and a photo booth).
“The response from the community has been amazing,” Erdmann says. “It’s been a wonderful welcoming.”

The commissioners will then officially select a finalist and the artwork will be installed at the center of the roundabout circle at Fruitville Road and Tamiami Trail.
Sujin Lim of Canton, New York, won the Public Art Committee’s recommendation with her colorful, resin-cast sculpture of a coral called Dwell, pictured above. Committee members appreciated that it was “playful, colorful and easy to understand.”
During yesterday’s presentation, Lim said, “This site is a gateway to the beaches. I wanted to bring what’s offshore, onshore and incorporate the color of the sky and sun. There’s the habitat underwater, and the new buildings nearby are the habitat of the humans. The coral would merge the two habitats.”
Lim also made her sculpture colorful, to pop against the neutral colors of the surrounding buildings.
The City Commission is expected to pick the finalist in March. Although Dwell was unanimously recommended by the Public Art Committee, the commission does have the option of denying it and choosing one of the other two contenders instead.
One option is an orchid-inspired piece called Whorligig by Mark Aeling of St. Petersburg.
Another option is a rendering by Shan Shan Sheng of San Francisco, who presented a painted-glass sundial concept called Open Gate to welcome visitors and new residents. Criteria for submissions included compatibility with the neighborhood, safety, a message that promotes diversity, and a piece that—along with the existing collection of public roundabout art—showcases a broad range of styles and has little need for maintenance.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) must also sign off on the final pick. Commissioners also hope to have a discussion with FDOT about increasing the sculpture’s scale, since the roundabout is so large. Currently, the height limit for the sculpture is 20 feet.
There’s a budget of no more than $175,000 for the sculpture, which will be funded by developer contributions to the city’s Public Art Fund. When completed, the piece will become part of the city’s permanent public art collection.
Building Dwell could take up to six months. It would be created in Wisconsin and transported to Sarasota. The hope is to install it by summer 2023.
