For men, getting older comes with its perks, like living life on their own terms and not having to "sweat the small stuff" day in and day out. At the same time, there are aspects of aging that men dread, like hormonal changes. Yes, you read that right â men, not just women, go through hormonal changes as they age. For men, the biggest change involves a drop in testosterone.
Lower levels of testosterone can wreak havoc on a male's mind and body and when left untreated, can result in symptoms like:
Those symptoms are concerning, but with testosterone replacement therapy and anti-aging medicine, many males improve their quality of life with age. The good news is that TRT and anti-aging meds aren't only reserved for "old guys." In fact, there's no magic age at which men should start thinking about hormone replacement therapy. Everyone's body is different, so if you're experiencing the above conditions in your mid-30s, TRT could be a viable solution when you consult with a doctor.
Testosterone is a crucial hormone for men and plays an important role throughout the male lifespan. Most of a male's testosterone is produced through the testicles. Also called the male sex hormone, testosterone starts playing its part during puberty.
When a male goes through puberty, testosterone helps males develop:
As boys turn to men and men grow older, testosterone levels deplete naturally. Sometimes, events like injuries and chronic health conditions like diabetes can lower testosterone levels. Unfortunately, when a man loses too much T, it results in hypogonadism. When this happens, the testosterone must be replaced, or the male will suffer from symptoms like muscle loss, low libido, and even depression.
TRT is exactly what it sounds like: a treatment option for men that replaces testosterone so that your body regulates hormones properly and restores balance to your life. Also called androgen replacement therapy, TRT alleviates the symptoms that men experience with low T.
Originally lab-synthesized in 1935, testosterone has grown in popularity since it was produced. Today, TRT and other testosterone treatments are among the most popular prescriptions in the U.S.
Without getting too deep into the science, TRT works by giving your body the essential testosterone it needs to function correctly. As the primary androgen for both males and females, testosterone impacts many of the body's natural processes â especially those needed for overall health. For example, men with low T are more prone to serious problems like cardiovascular disease and even type-2 diabetes.
When your body quits making enough testosterone, it causes your health to suffer until a solution is presented. That's where TRT and anti-aging medicine for men can help. TRT helps balance your hormones and replenish your depleted testosterone. With time, your body will begin to heal, and many symptoms like low libido and irritability begin to diminish.
For men, aging is the biggest contributor to lower testosterone levels, though there are other causes like obesity, drug abuse, testicular injuries, and certain prescribed medications. Sometimes, long-term health conditions like AIDS, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease can lower testosterone levels.
When a man's testosterone levels drop significantly, it alters his body's ratio of estrogen and testosterone. Lower testosterone levels cause more abdominal fat, which in turn results in increased aromatase, which converts even more testosterone into estrogen.
If you're concerned that you might have low T, you're not alone. Millions of men in the U.S. feel the same way. The best way to find out if your testosterone is low is to get your levels tested.
For sustainable testosterone replacement therapy benefits, you must consult with hormone doctors and experts like those you can find at Global Life Rejuvenation. That way, you can find the root cause of your hormone problems, and our team can craft a personalized HRT plan tailored to your needs.
Are you used to blasting through a productive day and accomplishing all your daily goals? Do you find yourself losing muscle mass and the craving to be intimate with your partner? Does your partner complain about how irritable you have become? If you're not usually a curmudgeon, your body could be giving you a sign. It could be time to speak with a doctor about TRT and anti-aging medicine for men in Raleigh, NC.
If you're experiencing any of the following symptoms, you might be battling against low testosterone:
One of the most common reasons that men choose TRT is because they have lost that "spark" with their partner. It's not easy for a man to hear that they're not performing like they used to. Intimacy is a powerful part of any relationship. When a once-healthy sex life dwindles, it can cause serious relationship issues.
The good news is that low libido doesn't have to be a permanent problem. TRT and anti-aging medicines help revert hormone levels back into their normal range. When this happens, many men have a more enjoyable life full of intimacy and sex drive.
Weak erections â it's an uncomfortable subject for many men in the U.S. to talk about. It's even worse to experience first-hand. You're in the midst of an intimate moment, and you can't do your part. Despite being perfectly normal, many men put blame and shame upon themselves when they can't achieve an erection. And while the inability to perform sexually can be caused by poor diet, obesity, and chronic health conditions, low testosterone is often a contributing factor.
Fortunately, weak erections are a treatable condition. The best way to regain your confidence and ability in bed is to speak with your doctor. Once any underlying conditions are discovered, options like TRT may be the best course of treatment.
Hair Loss
Do you find it harder and harder to work out and lift weights in the gym? Are you having problems lifting heavy items that you once had no problem lifting?
Recent studies show that when men are inactive, they lose .5% of muscle strength every year, from ages 25 to 60. After 60, muscle loss doubles every decade. While some muscle loss is common as men age, a significant portion can be tied to low testosterone levels. When a man's T levels drop, so does his muscle mass.
Testosterone is a much-needed component used in gaining and retaining muscle mass. That's why many doctors prescribe TRT Raleigh, NC, for men having problems with strength. One recent study found that men who increased their testosterone levels using TRT gained as much as 2.5 pounds of muscle mass.
Whether your gym performance is lacking, or you can't lift heavy items like you used to, don't blame it all on age. You could be suffering from hypogonadism.
If you're like millions of other men in their late 20s and 30s, dealing with hair loss is a reality you don't want to face. Closely related to testosterone decline and hormone imbalances, hair loss is distressing for many men. This common symptom is often related to a derivative of testosterone called DHT. Excess amounts of DHT cause hair follicles to halt their production, causing follicles to die.
Because hair located at the front and crown is more sensitive to DHT, it grows slower than other follicles and eventually stops growing permanently. Thankfully, TRT and anti-aging treatments for men in Raleigh, NC, is now available to address hair loss for good.
While it's true that you can't change your genes, you can change the effects of low testosterone on your body. Whether you're suffering from thinning hair or hair loss across your entire head, TRT and other hormone therapies can stop hair loss and even reverse the process.
Also called "man boobs," gynecomastia is essentially the enlargement of male breast tissue. This increase in fatty tissue is often caused by hormonal imbalances and an increase in estrogen. For men, estrogen levels are elevated during andropause. Also called male menopause, andropause usually happens because of a lack of testosterone.
If you're a man between the ages of 40 and 55, and you're embarrassed by having large breasts, don't lose hope. TRT is a safe, effective way to eliminate the underlying cause of gynecomastia without invasive surgery. With a custom HRT and fitness program, you can bring your testosterone and estrogen levels back to normal before you know it.
Decreased energy was once considered a normal part of aging. Today, many doctors know better. Advances in technology and our understanding of testosterone show that low T and lack of energy often go hand-in-hand.
If you're struggling to enjoy activities like playing with your kids or hiking in a park due to lack of energy, it could be a sign of low T. Of course, getting tired is perfectly normal for any man. But if you're suffering from continual fatigue, a lack of enjoyment, or a decrease in energy, it might be time to speak with a doctor.
Whether you're having a tough time getting through your day or can't finish activities you used to love, TRT could help.
A study from 2011 showed that men who lose a week's worth of sleep can experience lowered testosterone levels â as much as 15%, according to experts. Additional research into the topic found almost 15% of workers only get five hours of sleep (or less) per night. These findings suggest that sleep loss negatively impacts T levels and wellbeing.
The bottom line is that men who have trouble sleeping often suffer from lower testosterone levels as a result. If you find yourself exhausted at the end of the day but toss and turn all night long, you might have low T.
TRT and anti-aging medicines can restore your T levels back to normal, which can help you sleep better with proper diet and exercise.
You're feeling down about everything, and there's no solid explanation for why you're in such a crummy mood. Your daily life is great and full of success, but you can't help but feel unexcited and unmotivated. If you're experiencing symptoms like these, you may be depressed â and it may stem from low testosterone.
A research study from Munich found that men with depression also commonly had low testosterone levels. This same study also found that depressed men had cortisol levels that were 67% higher than other men. Because higher cortisol levels lead to lower levels of testosterone, the chances of severe depression increase.
Depression is a very real disorder and should always be diagnosed and treated by your doctor. One treatment option gaining in popularity is TRT for depression. Studies show that when TRT is used to restore hormone levels, men enjoy a lighter, more improved mood. That's great news for men who are depressed and have not had success with other treatments like anti-depression medicines, which alter the brain's chemistry.
Ask anyone over the age of 50 how their memory is, and they'll tell you it wasn't what it used to be. Memory loss and lack of concentration occur naturally as we age â these aren't always signs of dementia or Alzheimer's.
However, what many men consider a symptom of age may be caused by low testosterone. A 2006 study found that males with low T levels performed poorly on cognitive skill tests. These results suggest that low testosterone may play a part in reducing cognitive ability. If you're having trouble staying on task or remembering what your schedule is for the day, it might not be due to your age. It might be because your testosterone levels are too low. If you're having trouble concentrating or remembering daily tasks, it could be time to talk to your doctor.
Why? The aforementioned study found that participating men experienced improved cognitive skills when using TRT.
Even though today's society is more inclusive of large people, few adults enjoy gaining weight as they age. Despite their best efforts, many men just can't shed the extra pounds around their midsections, increasing their risk of heart disease and cancer.
Often, male weight gain is caused by hormone imbalances that slow the metabolism and cause weight to pile on. This phase of life is called andropause and happens when there is a lack of testosterone in the body. Couple that with high cortisol levels, and you've got a recipe for flabby guts and double chins.
Fortunately, TRT treatments and physician-led weight loss programs can correct hormone imbalances and lead to healthy weight loss for men.
The benefits of hormone replacement therapy for men are numerous. TRT not only grants relief from low-T symptoms but can help give protection against age-related diseases. Additionally, doctors now recognize male testosterone as an important role in alleviating depression.
Some of the most exciting benefits of TRT can include:
Because men do not go through a specific period of hormonal changes like women do (called menopause), many doctors refer to "male menopause" as androgen decline. This is just another term for low testosterone, but like female menopause, the symptoms can be serious and affect your quality of life.
The best way to fight back against male menopause is with male HRT treatment from Global Life Rejuvenation. We provide the following HRT treatments for men:
Our treatment options are personalized for your body and are available as creams, gels, injectables, and implantable pellets. Growth hormone peptides are an innovative therapy that boosts the natural human growth hormone production in a person's body. These exciting treatment options help slow down the aging process and give you a chance at restoring your youth.
Sermorelin is a synthetic hormone peptide, like GHRH, which triggers the release of growth hormones. When used under the care of a qualified physician, Sermorelin can help you lose weight, increase your energy levels, and help you feel much younger.
Human growth hormone (HGH) therapy has been used for years to treat hormone deficiencies. Unlike HGH, which directly replaces declining human growth hormone levels, Sermorelin addresses the underlying cause of decreased HGH, stimulating the pituitary gland naturally. This approach keeps the mechanisms of growth hormone production active.
Benefits of Sermorelin include:
Ipamorelin helps to release growth hormones in a person's body by mimicking a peptide called ghrelin. Ghrelin is one of three hormones which work together to regulate the growth hormone levels released by the pituitary gland. Because Ipamorelin stimulates the body to produce growth hormone, your body won't stop its natural growth hormone production, which occurs with synthetic HGH.
Ipamorelin causes growth hormone secretion that resembles natural release patterns rather than being constantly elevated from HGH. Because ipamorelin stimulates the natural production of growth hormone, our patients can use this treatment long-term with fewer health risks.
One of the biggest benefits of Ipamorelin is that it is suitable for both men and women. It provides significant short and long-term benefits in age management therapies, boosting patients' overall health, wellbeing, and outlook on life. When growth hormone is produced by the pituitary gland using Ipamorelin, clients report amazing benefits.
Some of those benefits include:
Whether you are considering our TRT services, HRT for women, or our growth hormone peptide services, we are here to help. The first step to turning back the hand of time starts by contacting Global Life Rejuvenation.

Elliott Avent laid out the essence of NC State baseball's season after the Pack9's win over Duke Tuesday night in one succinct statement.
"I've never cared how we started out,” Avent said. “I've always wanted to finish strong."
For a Wolfpack squad that's spent all year teetering on the cusp of putting it all together, it finally looks like the red and white is on the right trajectory. While a showdown against Miami to decide Pool D awaits on Thursday, State's momentous win over the Blue Devils bolsters its resume enough to make the NCAA Tournament.
Right?
Last season's exclusion from the NCAA Tournament spurred NC State to dramatically increase the difficulty of its schedule, leaving no room for a low RPI to burn it again. The Wolfpack's hovered within the Top 25 or so — at times inside the Top 10 — for most of the season. The Pack9's nonconference wins feature beating a then-unranked Coastal Carolina back in February and taking down then-No. 12 East Carolina at home, while its only two nonconference losses include a heartbreaking loss at then-No. 12 East Carolina and a 14-6 thrashing at fellow bubble team Elon. Combined with a brutally competitive ACC, it's hard to imagine the Wolfpack will miss out on an at-large bid again.
"If we're not in, I don't understand the whole concept," Avent said. "You've got the SEC and the ACC, two the best conferences in the country. RPI's always one and two, always neck and neck. The thing is they're the best teams in the country.
“They'll say, 'well you're 13-16 in this league.' Ole Miss went 14-16 in the SEC last year and lost the first game [of its conference tournament] and won the national championship.”
While the strength of schedule is a big plus, the Pack9 remains firmly on the bubble. D1Baseball and Baseball America have it among the last teams in, with the former slotting State in the very last spot at No. 64. Win or lose, NC State will have to bring its A-game against Miami to cement its status firmly above the likes of Elon, Texas State and UTSA and make the cut.
Playing in the ACC also comes with the discussion of how many teams in a given conference will make the NCAA Tournament. The ACC is deeper than its ever been, but the boost in RPI also brought the Pack a lower conference record and more crowding around the bubble. In addition to nonconference foes, State also contend will Notre Dame for an at-large bid.
The ACC will likely have 8-10 teams representing it in the NCAA Tournament, but the Wolfpack and the Fighting Irish both fall right around that cut-off line. The Pack9 took two out of three against Notre Dame in South Bend just a few weeks ago, but the Fighting Irish are riding a late-season surge of their own entering the postseason. While NC State holds the upper hand in resume comparisons to this point, it has at least one more chance to stake its claim as the better option to play in June.
If the Wolfpack hears its name called on Selection Sunday, another deep postseason run is entirely on the table. Ole Miss winning it all last season and NC State's run to Omaha in 2021 both show that all it takes is getting hot at the right time. With a four-game win streak in tow going into the Miami showdown, the Pack9 looks like it's finally putting the pieces together.
NC State looks like it turned a corner in the win over Duke. After witnessing a 7-1 lead slowly fade away, it looked like deja vu all over again for the Pack when Duke tie it up in the bottom of the ninth. The Wolfpack's inability to close out winnable ballgames plagued it all season long, but this time it found a way to win instead of caving in. It wasn't pretty, but State earned a much-needed win over a quality Duke team.
Dom Fritton and Logan Whitaker stood at the forefront on this turnaround. Although Fritton allowed the game-tying homer, he hunkered down to finish the frame, forcing extras after refusing to let the would-be winning run make it past second base. Whitaker proceeded to shut down the Blue Devils to the tune of four strikeouts in two shutout innings. For a guy that battled multiple arm injuries to ascend to the top of the Pack rotation, much like another legend in NC State athletics, giving up was not an option.
"We’ve got an icon at this university," Avent said. "Some people called him Coach V, some people just called him Jimmy. Jim Valvano... Nobody speaks of persistence and perseverance, never giving up like coach V did. That's Logan Whitaker. He's gone through so many arm injuries. Nine out of 10 people would not have kept doing the things he did to be on this stage. To be our Friday starter the last two years, for a guy that went through what he went through -- like I said, nine out of 10 people would have given up.
“He never quit. To see him in this moment for me, and for his family and for him personally, there's a lot of pride in that."
The Wolfpack is meshing together when it matters most. The near-disaster against the Blue Devils overshadowed an overall solid string of bullpen performances, namely Justin Lawson and Rio Britton joining Fritton and Whitaker in holding down the fort while the the offense went cold. Even though seven of its eight runs came in the first three innings.
The Pack9 showcased once again how can it put up runs in bunches and execute in clutch situations. Through the adversity of the season and a preseason hampered by construction on Doak Field, NC State's tenacity is finally yielding dividends.
"It comes with sticking with things," Avent said. "We went through a lot of things this year, probably more things this year than we've ever gone through. It seems like a year that we've gone through so many more things. It always felt like we weren't prepared enough. New players that don't know each other that well, it's hard to get committed when you've got 21 new players. For me, this game's all about commitment, especially this time of year. How bad you want to win, how bad you want to play and how bad you want to keep playing."
Miami, the grind of the postseason and the bubble all loom large, but one thing is certain: The Wolfpack wants to keep playing and has a lot left to play for.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — If being swept in the Eastern Conference Final wasn’t painful enough, are you ready to talk about how Frederick Andersen and Antti Raanta have a real chance to not be between the pipes for the Carolina Hurricanes next season?
I didn’t think so, however, it’s no secret the aging Andersen, who will be 34 by the beginning of next season, has been plagued with injuries in recent seasons.
He suffered both an upper (March) and lower body (Dec.) injury in 2018, a neck injury in 2020, three lower body injuries in 2021, dealt with a bout of COVID-19 in 2022, along with another lower body and undisclosed injury in the pandemic-shortened season and missed time with an upper body and illness in 2023.
It may be a good thing Carolina was blessed with a backup who is currently having career-best numbers on his fourth NHL team.
Raanta had a 19-3 year, posting a 2.23 goals against average and .910 save percentage in the regular season. His stretch of play down the final stretch even tabbed his as the starter for the beginning of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
But let’s not act like Raanta has always been a great goaltender.
His 19 wins were two shy of his career-best from the 2017-18 season, but has spent a majority of his 10-year career as a backup. Although beginning his career in Chicago, he is most remembered for his latest, four-year stint with the Arizona Coyotes.
Compared to his current 34-8 record where he was being treated as a part-time starter, mainly due to injuries, he was 46-42 in Arizona across four seasons. Remember — 82 games make up the regular season.
The Athletic said it best when it reported Raanta is more of a No. 2 goalie, “probably good for a maximum of 30 regular-season games.”
This previous season, across the NHL, fans saw more goalie tandems. And, that’s what Carolina did with Andersen, Raanta and — Pyotr Kochetkov.
The Athletic also said the Hurricanes could opt to go with Kochetkov, who they drafted in 2019 with a second-round pick, and currently has a four-year contract extension. That might suggest Carolina wants him in the organization long-term.
But is the team willing to throw all its chips in a basket on someone who is pretty much unproven?
Both Andersen and Raanta are on expiring deals, and with the Hurricanes staring down the barrel of likely needing to sign deals to star players and above-average position players, are three goalies with potentially hefty price tags in the cards?
Is Carolina really going to pick Andersen, for example, over 26-year-old Sebastian Aho who will be a free agent next year? Or Teuvo Teravaninen, Brady Skjei and Brett Pesce? It also has captain Jordan Staal without a contract now that the playoffs are over.
Primo goal scorers, assist masterminds and leadership can certainly be worth the cost over aging, injury-prone and half-a-season-worth goaltenders.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - It’s been a big week for Memphis rapper NLE Choppa.
On Friday, the soundtrack for Fast X was released, featuring some of his music.
Then, on Wednesday, he unveiled a new basketball court constructed in partnership with Nancy Lieberman Charities at the Raleigh Community Center.
Choppa, who broke into the mainstream with his 2109 song “Shotta Flow,” is now reaching new heights in his career and hopes to use his success to help his community, starting with giving local kids a place to shoot hoops.
“I feel like that’s what it’s all about,” Choppa said. “We get in positions to be able to give back, to be the inspiration and motivation for the youth.”
Choppa said the plan to build the new court started last year, when he met basketball superstar Nancy Lieberman at a game.
“I was just pulled toward him and his kindness,” Lieberman said. “We just hit it off.”
Lieberman has built more than 100 “Dream Courts” around the country. After sparking a friendship with Choppa, she decided Memphis needed to be home to the newest one.
“It’s like a pop-up classroom. It’s educational,” Liberman said. “Decision-making, friendships, critical thinking.”
Choppa said he’s been pleased watching the response to his tracks from the Fast X soundtrack and told FOX13 about shooting a music video in which he is seen driving a muscle car down the road alongside the stars of the film.
“I grew up watching Fast & Furious. Never in a million years would I have thought about being a part of the soundtrack and having the lead song,” he said. “Now I’m a part of that. It’s just something you’ve got to hit your knees and thank God for.”
He said working with internationally acclaimed artists was one of the highlights of the experience.
“Jimin from BTS, huge on the K-Pop scene. Kodak Black, Grammy-winning Muni Long and Jake,” Choppa said. “It was a beautiful experience for sure. Let alone Vin Diesel and the whole fast and furious crew!”
Choppa said he was pleased to see the court in use after months of planning and hopes to continue using his success to give back to his hometown.
“It’s a beautiful thing, you know?” he said. “I feel like it’s going to be major for the city and this is just the first one. We’re going to have many more coming.”

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Stealing food from mouths that need it the most.
A Raleigh mother had all the money she needed to feed her three kids.
But in a split second, she was left with nothing after finding out her food stamp benefits were stolen.
“Now that they took it, I got to figure it out,” said Diamond Monique, the EBT card fraud victim.
All the money Diamond Monique had to help pay for food this month is gone.
“It’s sad that it’s get swept from right underneath your nose,” said Monique.
Each month, she gets $900 from the state of Tennessee to provide for her three kids.
So she wasn’t expecting for her EBT card to be declined at the grocery store three days later.
“Why am I getting declined? I haven’t been grocery shopping,” said Monique.
Monique said she immediately called the Department of Human Services EBT customer service line.
They told her, she’s a victim of EBT card fraud.
Four different charges came from Oceanside, Calif..
Two charges at a Walmart for about $90 dollars.
Less than two hours later, a pair of charges for more than $300 each.
The mother of three was left with $15 for the rest of the month.
“People don’t understand, it’s hard you know. I don’t have help like that. This was my help. It’s not just food, it’s everyday life-to-life basis with three kids,” said Monique.
Jeff Horton owns One Point Solutions Group, a cybersecurity firm in Memphis.
He said EBT card fraud is a growing trend across the country.
He said thieves place devices on card readers to steal your info during checkout.
“Be aware of your surroundings and check those scanners when you are swiping your card just to make sure everything looks right,” Horton said.
Fox13 reached out to the Department of Health Services, which said it is unable to reissue stolen benefits and the case is being reviewed by the federal food and nutrition service.
In December, we reported on a similar incident.
The department recommended if anyone has their EBT benefits stolen to call their customer service line.
If your EBT card has been compromised, call the EBT Customer Service line at 1-888-997-9444?.
To assist TDHS/OIG with investigations of card skimming fraud, report the incident to the OIG fraud hotline at 1-800-241-2629.

By a margin as thin as a crispy chicken skin, voters have named the Triangle’s best fried chicken.
In the final, fried chicken giant Bojangles, with more than two dozen locations in the Triangle, faced off against Beasley’s Chicken + Honey, the ode to all things crispy chicken from chef Ashley Christensen.
After two weeks of voting, Triangle diners have declared the most popular fried chicken is the one in the yellow box.
With 54 percent of the vote, Bojangles has been crowned the top local fried chicken, coming from behind in the last hour to flip a 30 vote deficit. This marks the second bracket win for Bojangles, which also took the Biscuit Bracket in 2022, surely prevailing for its numerous locations and embedded culture built over generations of chicken eaters.
“It’s just exciting for us and the company to get this kind of recognition,” said Kenny Avery, COO of Tri-Arc Foods, the local franchisee of Bojangles. “To put our chicken up against a chef’s vision of fried chicken is really pretty special.”
There’s kind of a chicken or the egg question at Bojangles when it comes to the fried chicken and the biscuits. Avery said originally the famous biscuit was meant to be an accompaniment to the chicken, but that now they hold equal prominence.
“I don’t know that you can talk about one without the other,” Avery said.
The fried chicken at Bojangles undergoes about a 12 hour process, where the chicken is tumbled and seasoned and marinated before frying. Despite the enormous volume of a fast food chain, Avery said the chicken is never made from frozen pieces.
That chicken has become a staple at tailgates and picnics, where big yellow Bo Boxes are the life of the party. Avery said that while fried chicken is a beloved meal, it can be labor-intensive to make at home.
“We are in the South and fried chicken is a staple,” Avery said. “Tri-Arc has been in this market for 43 years and our customers find us for our consistent product and value. Fried chicken is not all that easy to do at home, it can be messy. And that’s why (Bojangles) is so popular. People love fried chicken but don’t want the hassle.”
The chicken at Bojangles stands out in the fast food crowd for a bit more aggressive seasoning than the norm. Sure you can get spicy chicken at Popeyes or apply your own dashes of Texas Pete, but Bojangles serves a spiced chicken that has a peppery warmth fried into the crust. If you can’t handle a mild tingle, it might not be the chicken for you.
“Our founder (the late Jack Fulk) had really good recipes and he knew your run of the mill chicken isn’t anything all that special,” Avery said. “Having the flavor we have, it doesn’t give you the heat, but you do get the warmth, the spice flavor. We don’t do Nashvile hot chicken, there’s a big difference between that and our chicken. We say ours is flavorful, not spicy. It’s that really good sweet spot.”
In 2011, when chef Ashley Christensen could have done just about anything as a follow-up to Poole’s Diner, she launched Beasley’s Chicken + Honey on Wilmington Street in Downtown Raleigh. The restaurant was part of a trio of openings, including the former burger shop Chuck’s and the newly reopened cocktail bar Fox Liquor Bar.
Immediately, Beasley’s offered an idealized view of fried chicken, deeply browned and crunchy and drizzled with honey for a salty, sweet bite.
Christensen said she grew up eating the chicken of her Memphis-born mother, who would marinate pieces in buttermilk and season them in a paper grocery bag, shaking on the seasoned flour before frying.
“She always cooked the chicken first and let it rest while she finished all of the other dishes,” Christensen said. “It was served barely warm, rested, and crispy. I still love the smells and the sounds of it.”
The honey came from her father, who kept bees in the family’s backyard.
“I think it’s akin to why we love buttery salty popcorn and chocolate at the movie theatre, or bacon dipped in our maple syrup,” Christensen said.
At Beasley’s the chicken is brined, then dredged and finally fried in a pressure fryer. Each piece is then fried a second time before its served.
“The result is a super-crispy piece of chicken that is also juicy and rested at the bone,” Christensen said. “The goal of this is to have the experience of biting into a hot and crispy, crunchy piece of chicken without all of the juices rushing out of the meat… instead that juice stays put for the next bite.”
The chicken is at the center of Beasley’s, but the restaurant is hardly a chicken shack. It’s closer to a Southern meat n’ three, where you’ll find upwards of a dozen different sides and entrees like meatloaf and pot pie and catfish.
Beasley’s showcases different sides of chicken, from its namesake bone-in with honey, to smoked wings and a searingly hot but irresistible Nashville Hot version on white bread. And the pairings go well beyond sweet tea — the Champagne list is longer than the beer list, including a few stunners.
In its decade in Raleigh, Beasley’s has evolved into one of the downtown mainstays.
“I love that it has been so embraced by the community,” Christensen said. “It’s the extension of an experience beloved to me, but that so many people feel connected with in so many different ways. We wanted to take a simple idea and work everyday to tweak it and make our offering of it delicious, and hopefully more delicious than the day before.
“It’s never been about elevating it, but instead being dedicated to its simplicity and approachability, and wrapping it in hospitality. Ten years ago, or today…I love walking in and seeing folks enjoying it together.”
