But when the editors of the influential entertainment and travel website Thrillist created their list of "The 20 Greatest Beach Towns in America," they skipped Siesta Key and opted for Anna Maria Island, the Key's less famous tourist destination rival that you will find located about 25 miles to the north in Manatee County by the mouth of Tampa Bay. Despite Florida being home to numerous popular beach towns like Key West and Amelia Island, only Anna Maria Island was chosen from the Sunshine State.

Siesta Key and Anna Maria Island both have amazing beaches with great nearby restaurants. And they're both located by lots of other fun things to do, with Anna Maria Island close to downtown Bradenton and the Riverwalk, while Siesta Key is by downtown Sarasota and St. Armands Circle.
The fact that Anna Maria Island doesn't allow buildings higher than three stories definitely adds to its appeal, especially if you're seeking the kind of Old Florida experience so many of us adore. In addition to Anna Maria, I also spend a lot of time in the island's other two cities: Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach, which both offer better nightlife and live music options, especially along Bradenton Beach's Bridge Street.
However, nowhere on Anna Maria Island offers a true nightclub experience like what you find on Siesta Key. In fact, one of my best late-nights out of recent memory was spent watching one-man band TL Jentgens perform at a packed Beach Club, the recently renovated Siesta Key Village nightclub established in 1947.
Here's the thing, though. I love spending time and the occasional staycation on both Siesta Key and Anna Maria Island. And I'm just glad to see our Sarasota-Manatee region represented on any national list like this "Greatest Beach Towns in America."

However, the effort it takes to get there is well worth it - this beach not only features crystal-clear water, but plenty of history to explore, as well. If its scenery alone doesn't captivate the hearts of its visitors, then its pristine beaches surely will.

SARASOTA COUNTY (WFLA) — Sarasota County commissioners recently advanced plans to bring a roundabout to the intersection of Midnight Pass Road and Beach Road on Siesta Key. The intersection sits just a few hundred feet away from the public beach parking lot.
County officials say the roundabout will improve safety in the area and help improve the flow of traffic.
During a presentation to the commission last week, Sarasota County Public Works Director Spencer Anderson talked about the benefits of roundabouts.
“They reduce crashes and more specifically, they reduce crashes that result in fatalities or significant injury,” said Anderson.
Design plans for the new roundabout included dedicated crosswalks at each leg of the traffic circle, flashing beacons at pedestrian crosswalks, 10-feet wide sidewalks around the perimeter of the roundabout, bike ramps on an off of the roundabout, and added street lighting.
Some residents on the barrier island, however, aren’t convinced the county’s plans will improve safety. Some fear it will make matters worse for people on bikes and on foot.
“We have millions of pedestrians coming through that location per year. Putting in a roundabout, I believe will just exacerbate the issues that we have,” said island business owner Michael Holderness.
Other residents told 8 On Your Side they feel the $2.9 million going toward the roundabout could be better spent.
“I don’t think it is going to make that much of a difference. I think the accident rate is very low here already, so I would like to just keep it the way it is,” said Siesta Key resident David S.
District 2 commissioner Mark Smith has lived on the island for about 30 years and also pointed out the intersection isn’t a common one for traffic collisions in his memory.
“It is an extremely tricky intersection for bicyclist and pedestrians. I am hoping this will be the solution that will make it less tricky,” Smith said.
Island resident Tom Kump tells us he is optimistic about the addition of the roundabout. “All in all, I think it will be a positive thing for the key. [It’ll] Help the traffic move and it will be safer here at the intersection,” said Kump.
County officials say construction isn’t expected to close the intersection at any point. Work is expected to take around seven months and is slated to begin next spring.

A bill that would allow residents of Siesta Key to form their own government will be introduced in the Florida legislature during the coming session.
The grassroots organization Save Siesta Key has for years petitioned local lawmakers to bring a bill to Tallahassee that would allow residents to vote on a referendum to break away from Sarasota County.
Last week, the Sarasota legislative delegation voted 3-1 to move the bill forward.
Tim Hensey, the chairman of the incorporation advocacy group, said Sarasota County’s approval of several large hotels is one main issue of concern.
"The island has a charm and that charm stands to be eroded if you put too many people out here on our streets and our beaches,” he said. “You know, we're not trying to just shut the doors and say this is our island but the increase in visitors has been tremendous."
The barrier island of Siesta Key has seen the county sign off on several high-density hotels in just the past few years. Many residents also opposed the county's decision to dredge Big Pass.
For years, residents of the island community have asked local lawmakers to support their efforts to form their own government. That effort failed last year but lawmakers encouraged the group to come back with a feasibility study and evidence that most residents supported incorporation.
In a recent election-like straw poll of thousands of residents, results showed that 87% of those responded favored the creation of a new town and local government on the island.
"Most people would say that the residents of a given area are better equipped and better tuned into the issues to protect the interests and preserve the character of the community,” said Hensey.
The group also completed a more than 100-page feasibility report on how the Town of Siesta Key would operate independent of Sarasota County.
If the full Florida legislature passes the incorporation bill and Gov. Ron DeSantis signs off, it will head to a special election in November 2024.
An incorporation referendum would then need to get more than 50% of Siesta Key's registered voters' support.
