What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a crucial hormone for men and plays an important role throughout the male lifespan. Most of a male's testosterone is produced through the testicles. Also called the male sex hormone, testosterone starts playing its part during puberty.

When a male goes through puberty, testosterone helps males develop:

  • Facial Hair
  • Body Hair
  • Deeper Voice
  • Muscle Strength
  • Increased Libido
  • Muscle Density

As boys turn to men and men grow older, testosterone levels deplete naturally. Sometimes, events like injuries and chronic health conditions like diabetes can lower testosterone levels. Unfortunately, when a man loses too much T, it results in hypogonadism. When this happens, the testosterone must be replaced, or the male will suffer from symptoms like muscle loss, low libido, and even depression.

How Does TRT Work?

TRT is exactly what it sounds like: a treatment option for men that replaces testosterone so that your body regulates hormones properly and restores balance to your life. Also called androgen replacement therapy, TRT alleviates the symptoms that men experience with low T.

Originally lab-synthesized in 1935, testosterone has grown in popularity since it was produced. Today, TRT and other testosterone treatments are among the most popular prescriptions in the U.S.

Without getting too deep into the science, TRT works by giving your body the essential testosterone it needs to function correctly. As the primary androgen for both males and females, testosterone impacts many of the body's natural processes – especially those needed for overall health. For example, men with low T are more prone to serious problems like cardiovascular disease and even type-2 diabetes.

When your body quits making enough testosterone, it causes your health to suffer until a solution is presented. That's where TRT and anti-aging medicine for men can help. TRT helps balance your hormones and replenish your depleted testosterone. With time, your body will begin to heal, and many symptoms like low libido and irritability begin to diminish.

What Causes Low T?

For men, aging is the biggest contributor to lower testosterone levels, though there are other causes like obesity, drug abuse, testicular injuries, and certain prescribed medications. Sometimes, long-term health conditions like AIDS, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney disease can lower testosterone levels.

When a man's testosterone levels drop significantly, it alters his body's ratio of estrogen and testosterone. Lower testosterone levels cause more abdominal fat, which in turn results in increased aromatase, which converts even more testosterone into estrogen.

If you're concerned that you might have low T, you're not alone. Millions of men in the U.S. feel the same way. The best way to find out if your testosterone is low is to get your levels tested.

For sustainable testosterone replacement therapy benefits, you must consult with hormone doctors and experts like those you can find at Global Life Rejuvenation. That way, you can find the root cause of your hormone problems, and our team can craft a personalized HRT plan tailored to your needs.

Low Sex Drive

One of the most common reasons that men choose TRT is because they have lost that "spark" with their partner. It's not easy for a man to hear that they're not performing like they used to. Intimacy is a powerful part of any relationship. When a once-healthy sex life dwindles, it can cause serious relationship issues.

The good news is that low libido doesn't have to be a permanent problem. TRT and anti-aging medicines help revert hormone levels back into their normal range. When this happens, many men have a more enjoyable life full of intimacy and sex drive.

Inability to Achieve and Maintain an Erection

Weak erections – it's an uncomfortable subject for many men in the U.S. to talk about. It's even worse to experience first-hand. You're in the midst of an intimate moment, and you can't do your part. Despite being perfectly normal, many men put blame and shame upon themselves when they can't achieve an erection. And while the inability to perform sexually can be caused by poor diet, obesity, and chronic health conditions, low testosterone is often a contributing factor.

Fortunately, weak erections are a treatable condition. The best way to regain your confidence and ability in bed is to speak with your doctor. Once any underlying conditions are discovered, options like TRT may be the best course of treatment.

Hair Loss

Loss of Strength and Muscle Mass

Do you find it harder and harder to work out and lift weights in the gym? Are you having problems lifting heavy items that you once had no problem lifting?

Recent studies show that when men are inactive, they lose .5% of muscle strength every year, from ages 25 to 60. After 60, muscle loss doubles every decade. While some muscle loss is common as men age, a significant portion can be tied to low testosterone levels. When a man's T levels drop, so does his muscle mass.

Testosterone is a much-needed component used in gaining and retaining muscle mass. That's why many doctors prescribe TRT Siesta Key, FL, for men having problems with strength. One recent study found that men who increased their testosterone levels using TRT gained as much as 2.5 pounds of muscle mass.

Whether your gym performance is lacking, or you can't lift heavy items like you used to, don't blame it all on age. You could be suffering from hypogonadism.

Hair Loss

If you're like millions of other men in their late 20s and 30s, dealing with hair loss is a reality you don't want to face. Closely related to testosterone decline and hormone imbalances, hair loss is distressing for many men. This common symptom is often related to a derivative of testosterone called DHT. Excess amounts of DHT cause hair follicles to halt their production, causing follicles to die.

Because hair located at the front and crown is more sensitive to DHT, it grows slower than other follicles and eventually stops growing permanently. Thankfully, TRT and anti-aging treatments for men in Siesta Key, FL, is now available to address hair loss for good.

While it's true that you can't change your genes, you can change the effects of low testosterone on your body. Whether you're suffering from thinning hair or hair loss across your entire head, TRT and other hormone therapies can stop hair loss and even reverse the process.

Gynecomastia

Also called "man boobs," gynecomastia is essentially the enlargement of male breast tissue. This increase in fatty tissue is often caused by hormonal imbalances and an increase in estrogen. For men, estrogen levels are elevated during andropause. Also called male menopause, andropause usually happens because of a lack of testosterone.

If you're a man between the ages of 40 and 55, and you're embarrassed by having large breasts, don't lose hope. TRT is a safe, effective way to eliminate the underlying cause of gynecomastia without invasive surgery. With a custom HRT and fitness program, you can bring your testosterone and estrogen levels back to normal before you know it.

Decreased Energy

Decreased energy was once considered a normal part of aging. Today, many doctors know better. Advances in technology and our understanding of testosterone show that low T and lack of energy often go hand-in-hand.

If you're struggling to enjoy activities like playing with your kids or hiking in a park due to lack of energy, it could be a sign of low T. Of course, getting tired is perfectly normal for any man. But if you're suffering from continual fatigue, a lack of enjoyment, or a decrease in energy, it might be time to speak with a doctor.

Whether you're having a tough time getting through your day or can't finish activities you used to love, TRT could help.

Lack of Sleep

A study from 2011 showed that men who lose a week's worth of sleep can experience lowered testosterone levels – as much as 15%, according to experts. Additional research into the topic found almost 15% of workers only get five hours of sleep (or less) per night. These findings suggest that sleep loss negatively impacts T levels and wellbeing.

The bottom line is that men who have trouble sleeping often suffer from lower testosterone levels as a result. If you find yourself exhausted at the end of the day but toss and turn all night long, you might have low T.

TRT and anti-aging medicines can restore your T levels back to normal, which can help you sleep better with proper diet and exercise.

Depression

You're feeling down about everything, and there's no solid explanation for why you're in such a crummy mood. Your daily life is great and full of success, but you can't help but feel unexcited and unmotivated. If you're experiencing symptoms like these, you may be depressed – and it may stem from low testosterone.

A research study from Munich found that men with depression also commonly had low testosterone levels. This same study also found that depressed men had cortisol levels that were 67% higher than other men. Because higher cortisol levels lead to lower levels of testosterone, the chances of severe depression increase.

Depression is a very real disorder and should always be diagnosed and treated by your doctor. One treatment option gaining in popularity is TRT for depression. Studies show that when TRT is used to restore hormone levels, men enjoy a lighter, more improved mood. That's great news for men who are depressed and have not had success with other treatments like anti-depression medicines, which alter the brain's chemistry.

Inability to Concentrate

Ask anyone over the age of 50 how their memory is, and they'll tell you it wasn't what it used to be. Memory loss and lack of concentration occur naturally as we age – these aren't always signs of dementia or Alzheimer's.

However, what many men consider a symptom of age may be caused by low testosterone. A 2006 study found that males with low T levels performed poorly on cognitive skill tests. These results suggest that low testosterone may play a part in reducing cognitive ability. If you're having trouble staying on task or remembering what your schedule is for the day, it might not be due to your age. It might be because your testosterone levels are too low. If you're having trouble concentrating or remembering daily tasks, it could be time to talk to your doctor.

Why? The aforementioned study found that participating men experienced improved cognitive skills when using TRT.

Weight Gain

Even though today's society is more inclusive of large people, few adults enjoy gaining weight as they age. Despite their best efforts, many men just can't shed the extra pounds around their midsections, increasing their risk of heart disease and cancer.

Often, male weight gain is caused by hormone imbalances that slow the metabolism and cause weight to pile on. This phase of life is called andropause and happens when there is a lack of testosterone in the body. Couple that with high cortisol levels, and you've got a recipe for flabby guts and double chins.

Fortunately, TRT treatments and physician-led weight loss programs can correct hormone imbalances and lead to healthy weight loss for men.

What is Sermorelin?

Sermorelin is a synthetic hormone peptide, like GHRH, which triggers the release of growth hormones. When used under the care of a qualified physician, Sermorelin can help you lose weight, increase your energy levels, and help you feel much younger.

HRT For Men Siesta Key, FL

Benefits of Sermorelin

Human growth hormone (HGH) therapy has been used for years to treat hormone deficiencies. Unlike HGH, which directly replaces declining human growth hormone levels, Sermorelin addresses the underlying cause of decreased HGH, stimulating the pituitary gland naturally. This approach keeps the mechanisms of growth hormone production active.

Benefits of Sermorelin include:

  • Better Immune Function
  • Improved Physical Performance
  • More Growth Hormone Production
  • Less Body Fat
  • Build More Lean Muscle
  • Better Sleep

What is Ipamorelin?

Ipamorelin helps to release growth hormones in a person's body by mimicking a peptide called ghrelin. Ghrelin is one of three hormones which work together to regulate the growth hormone levels released by the pituitary gland. Because Ipamorelin stimulates the body to produce growth hormone, your body won't stop its natural growth hormone production, which occurs with synthetic HGH.

Ipamorelin causes growth hormone secretion that resembles natural release patterns rather than being constantly elevated from HGH. Because ipamorelin stimulates the natural production of growth hormone, our patients can use this treatment long-term with fewer health risks.

  • Increased Athletic Performance

FLORIDA — In the days following Hurricane Idalia’s hit to Florida, migrating flamingos blown off course while traveling from Mexico to Cuba have been spotted up and down the west coast of Florida — from Sanibel to Tallahassee.

Some of these disoriented birds have found themselves in sticky situations since mistakenly landing in the Sunshine State.

Michael Patterson and Scooter, “a pair of eagle-eyed lifeguards,” spotted “a surprise guest” at Siesta Key Beach on Friday morning — a lost flamingo, Sarasota County wrote in a Facebook post.

A volunteer from Save Our Seabirds came out to rescue “this majestic bird” and brought it to the organization’s facility, the county said.

Another displaced flamingo was also found struggling in the water off St. Pete Beach Friday afternoon, SPCA Tampa Bay said in a news release.

The bird was found about 800 yards off Blind Pass by Captain Jeff Brooks and Madeira Beach Commissioner Anne-Marie Brooks during a boat trip organized by Bobbie Shay Lee, aide to Pinellas County Commissioner Brian Scott, to assess beach erosion caused by the storm.

“It was swimming away from land and seemed very confused and exhausted,” SPCA said.

The elected officials and others on the boat “jumped into action when they saw this flamingo in distress,” Martha Boden, the agency’s CEO, said.

SPCA Tampa Bay’s wildlife team was ready to assist, setting up temporary housing for the flamingo at its “for-all” animal shelter in Largo. It was brought to a licensed rehabilitator Saturday.

“This is a great example of what we mean when we say ‘every animal matters,’” Boden said. “Our ‘for-all’ shelter is there for any species who needs our help.”

Take a Peek at Siesta Promenade, a New Development That’s Headed to South Sarasota

The project, which will be located at the corner of Stickney Point Road and South Tamiami Trail, will break ground early next year.

September 5, 2023

Mega-developer Benderson Development is poised to break ground on Siesta Promenade, which will change the face of the gateway to Siesta Key in south Sarasota.

And as the project at 6450 S. Tamiami Trail inches toward groundbreaking in 2024, Benderson Development gave us an exclusive look at what’s coming to the long-vacant site.

The 24-acre Siesta Promenade project, near the “south bridge,” as locals call it, will start going up early next year. It’s headed to the northwest corner of South Tamiami Trail and Stickney Point Road—“what we believe to be one of the best available corners in the state,” Benderson’s vice-president of retail development Rex Burgher told us all the way back in 2005.

The project will comprise a total of 10 retail and restaurant buildings, including a yet-to-be-named grocer. It will have 140,000 square feet of retail space, with a minimum of 7,000 square feet of office space, and an apartment building with 414 units, 25 of which will be affordable. The affordable units will target those earning 80 percent of the area’s annual median income, which amounts to $51,200 for one person, and $73,100 for a household of four. It’s Benderson’s first multifamily development in Sarasota County.

Siesta Promenade will also include an 80-foot high, 130-room hotel, which will be larger than any single hotel on nearby Siesta Key, where space for such a dense hotel is limited.

The building heights will transition across the property, with the hotel being the highest point. That said, some details as far as the number of levels of each building may shift ahead of groundbreaking, according to Benderson’s marketing director Julie Fanning. The hotel and grocer will be located on Stickney Point; the residences will be located to the north of the project, tucked away from heavier traffic; and some of the retail and restaurant spaces will face the bustling South Trail.

Retail and residential will be built in unison and take about two years to complete, and the hotel will follow. “The intent is for the shops and restaurants to be open when residents move in, so they can immediately enjoy the on-site amenities and lifestyle experiences,” says Fanning.

Benderson acquired the site in 2005 for $17.1 million. It formerly housed a Shell gas station and the Pine Shores Mobile Home Park, where there were roughly 140 mobile homes.

Siesta Promenade was approved by Sarasota County in 2018. “The property was always intended to be a mixed-use development, but the design has evolved over the planning process from a town center to a neighborhood destination with a coastal village feel,” Fanning says.

The collection of buildings will feature a variety of architectural styles, from Florida modern to coastal contemporary, “The village environment will be enhanced with landscaping and plenty of inviting outdoor spaces to relax and recharge,” Fanning adds.

On Sept. 27, the Sarasota County Commission will vote on a decision on plans to add 39 parallel parking spaces along Glencoe and Crestwood avenues, which are residential roads. That’s a point of contention for nearby residents, but Fanning says that adding the spaces “is one of many traffic-calming measures being considered by Benderson to maintain the neighborhood feel and create a more pedestrian-friendly area.”

Opponents, however, say the extra parking does not comply with the stipulations agreed to as part of the county commission’s initial approval of the development, which included a 20-foot landscaped buffer for the neighborhood, instead.

Founded in 1949 in Buffalo, New York, Benderson Development’s portfolio includes more than 800 properties and more than 50 million square feet in 40 states, including grocery-anchored centers, warehouse-industrial properties, offices and hotels.

In March, Benderson Development opened a Publix at The Landings on U.S. 41 south of Proctor Road, and is also working on Fruitville Farms, a Publix-anchored mixed-use development now underway at the intersection of Fruitville Road and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. Benderson also recently closed on the former Café Baci restaurant on 4001 S. Tamiami Trail and purchased the Walgreens on the corner of Bee Ridge and Beneva roads.

Last year, the company acquired the Sarasota County administration building and surrounding parking lots last year. It plans to redevelop the property by the end of 2025 and build a mixed-use development of residential, office and retail spaces.

“Tamiami Trail and Stickney Point Road is the literal gateway to Siesta Key—a world-renowned tourist destination,” Fanning says. “The property had been severely neglected when we acquired it, presenting a tremendous opportunity. When complete, it will be a vibrant destination for both locals and visitors to enjoy.”

End of an era: Davidson’s doors close in Siesta Village

By John Morton

For the first time in 65 years, there will not be a Davidson-run drugstore in the Siesta Key Village. On Oct. 28, the venerable Davidson Drugs business located at 5124 Ocean Blvd. in the plaza that bears its name closed its doors.“Sad news, indeed,” Mark Smith, the Sarasota County commissioner who previously was a board member of the Siesta Key Village Association, said of the news. “Davidson Drugs has been an institution in Siesta Village since I grew up here. It will be terribly missed.”The Davidson Drugs in Siesta Key’s Southbridge Mall at 6595 Midnight Pass Rd. will continue to operate, but only as a general store. Its hours will not change, it will feature the same merchandise mix, and it will keep its longstanding U.S. Post Office.

However, the company’s pharmacy operations — the backbone of its humble beginnings — have been eliminated altogether. On Oct. 18, all pharmacy files and prescriptions became property of Walgreens via a transaction between the two businesses, according to Richard Davidson, president of Davidson Drugs. Customers of the Davidson’s store in Davidson Plaza in the Village will now have their needs met at the Walgreens at Bee Ridge Road and U.S. 41. The customers at the Davidson’s in Southbridge Mall will be using the Walgreens at Stickney Point Road and U.S. 41.“We’ve done Siesta Key a great service and it’s terrible that we’re leaving (the Village),” Davidson said. “My father was adamant that a pharmacy remained on Siesta Key, and we thought we had found someone, but they couldn’t make the numbers work.“We were offering our two vacant units (nearby on Avenida Madera, where the Davidsons serve as landlords) and were even willing to subsidize the rent.”That father, John Davidson, was the man who brought the island its first pharmacy when in 1958 he set up shop with what he called the Siesta Key Pharmacy in the location that’s now home to Beach Bazaar across the street. Later, he’d help build Siesta Village Plaza and his pharmacy became the anchor. Eventually, the complex would become Davidson Plaza.“Obviously, he’s saddened,” Richard Davidson said of his father, who’s now 92 and still involved in the business but in a limited role due to health issues. “He’s a pharmacist by education. When he was an owner/operator, he was the one filling the pills.”

Why the closing?“It’s a business decision – it boiled down to that,” Richard Davidson said. “The pharmacy was pulling down the store. It probably should have been done a couple of years ago.”Davidson pointed to ongoing challenges with changes in prescription reimbursement, mostly related to Medicare Part D, as the largest factor.“It was always bad, and now it’s really bad,” he said of the control on reimbursements and how they’ve deteriorated as the result of pharmacy benefits managers who he likened to “a fox who watches the hen house.”“It’s all regulated,” Davidson continued. “You can’t make your own fair retail price like the old days.”He said today’s system “put the nail in the coffin for independent pharmacies like us.”Furthermore, Davidson said the need to support the hiring of pharmacists and technicians was also a strain, as were the cost of operations. “We also had two vans and provided free delivery. There are a lot of expenses,” Davidson said.My-Huong Ta, operator of Siesta Village Dentistry which is one of Davidson Plaza’s tenants, was among those who relied on the pharmacy.“It’s a shock for many of us,” she said of the news of the closing, “especially because we call in prescriptions for our patients to the Davidson’s drug store often. My patients are very surprised and some of their workers were in distress because they will be out of a job.”Ta abruptly found out about the pharmacy’s closure through a typical transaction.“When I called in a prescription for a patient (on Oct. 17) the pharmacist staff told me that in 10 minutes — at 6 p.m. — it will be turned over to Walgreens and it will be shut down completely,” she said, noting that her next call the following day went directly to Walgreens.“Needless to say, I’m sorry to see the drugstore closed,” Ta added. “I hope the workers can get jobs elsewhere soon, and that the Davidsons are doing well.”

Speaking of employees, of which the store had about 15, Davidson said he often had trouble finding and keeping them in recent years.“Sarasota is getting too expensive to live in, so we were having to hire people who live further away in places like Bradenton. And they’d tell us the drive was too much,” he said. One of the endeavors in which the Davidsons will continue be involved is the management of its vast amount of commercial real estate – a collection to which the Village drugstore has now been added as available. Davidson said it’s already being marketed.“It’s pretty valuable space,” he said of the 8,500 square feet. When asked what he prefers to see occupy it, he said “All I can say is that it can’t be another drugstore. That’s part of our agreement with Walgreens.”

FROM JOHN AND RITA DAVIDSON:

“I want to thank the generations of loyal customers and patients who have supported Davidson’s over the last 65 years. I deeply appreciate all the employees who have worked to make Davidson’s a unique and friendly place to shop since 1958. Thousands of patients have trusted our pharmacists for their prescription needs and professional advice.“All six of our children, as well as several grandchildren, have been employees since the early years, making this a true family business. As children, they might sweep the floors or straighten the shelves. Eventually, they were able to work the cash register. I am very proud of my sons Richard (president of Davidson Drugs) and Bob, who have devoted many years to the success of one of the longest-running businesses in Sarasota.“But times change, and now is the right time to move on. It may be the end of an era, but the beginning of a new one.” John Davidson

“John has often reminisced about the early years on Siesta Key. The Village was a place where everyone knew everyone, charming boutiques carried high-end merchandise, one could buy the best preppy clothes at Conrad Egan, Anna herself was in her deli making sandwiches, John MacDonald could regularly be spotted having lunch, girls from Out-of-Door Academy occasionally tied up their horses to shop at the drugstore, Dr. Freeman Epes made house calls, and the best sundaes were to be had at the Davidson’s soda fountain.“There are too many stories to begin to recall, but suffice it to say that John Davidson has always been in the center of the action, always working to improve the community, for 65 years.”Rita Davidson
