Can More Estrogen Be Linked to A Reduced Risk of COVID-19?

C-19

The reason why men are far more likely to die from COVID-19 than their female counterparts may be linked to the amount of estrogen in the body. Studies have shown, women who received hormone replacement therapy within six months of being diagnosed with COVID-19, had a reduced rate of mortality from the virus.

In a study conducted by Harvard University, men are 1.7 times more likely to die from COVID-19 versus women even though women are more inclined to acquire the virus. This continues to prove true as 55% of COVID-19 deaths between April 2020 and May 2021 were associated with men.

Recent research conducted by the University of Oxford and the University of Southampton in the UK observed data which suggests women who followed through with oral contraceptives of estrogen within 6 months of being diagnosed with COVID-19 were 78% less likely to acquire COVID-19 in comparison to others who did not. Of the 5,400 women observed, estrogen is aligned with creating a “protective” effect against COVID-19.
