Medical Weight Loss in Fort Lee, NJ

A Fort Lee woman woke up to a huge surprise on New Year's Day when Howie Guja of the Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol knocked on her door, oversized check in hand.

Guja arrived at the home of Dorice Singleton of Fort Lee at around 11 a.m. on Jan. 1. After a few minutes of knocking, he heard a voice ask, "Can I help you?" as a man peered at him through an open window. Guja flipped the check around to show the man, who quickly ran off to wake up his wife.

Moments later, Singleton and her husband, Bill, were hugging and jumping for joy as they were handed a big check for $75,000 from Publishers Clearing House.

"Oh, my goodness. I can't even believe this is happening. I feel like I'm still dreaming," said Singleton, who, according to Guja, plays the Publishers Clearing House app every day and has been entering sweepstakes for many years. She continued, "I never thought I'd win something this big. But, I thought to myself, you have to have faith."

Singleton, who works at a local dollar store, said they will use this money to purchase a home, with Bill adding, "We're planning on moving out of state soon, and this will help us buy our own house."

Publishers Clearing House: The odds of winning and the warning against scams

Singleton is one in a billion, according to the Publishers Clearing House website, with the estimated odds of winning the next $75,000 prize being one in 1.2 billion. You can view your odds of winning a PCH prize by checking out the "sweepstakes facts" for each individual sweepstakes.

Since 1967, the marketing company, which has become most well-known for its sweepstakes, has awarded over $616 million in prizes.

"It's as real as it could be," Singleton said. "Keep playing the games. Keep entering. Truly, it may turn out to be you."

However, while the chances of winning money from Publishers Clearing House are very real, in recent years the company has been warning consumers about scams in which people pretend to be PCH employees or representatives.

"If you are ever contacted by someone claiming to represent PCH, or claiming to be one of our employees, and asked to send or wire money (for any reason whatsoever, including taxes); or send a pre-paid gift card or Green Dot Moneypak card in order to claim a sweepstakes prize — don't! It's a scam," says the PCH website. "If you are sent a check, told it's a partial prize award, and asked to cash it and send a portion back to claim the full prize award, don't. The check is fake, but the scam is real!"

The Publishers Clearing House website says winning one of the company's prizes is always free and winners will never have to pay to claim a prize. If you are asked to send a payment or money card in order to claim a prize, you have not been contacted by the real Publishers Clearing House.

Anthony Johnson has the latest from Fort Lee as residents prepare for the impacts of congestion pricing.

FORT LEE, New Jersey (WABC) -- Fort Lee, New Jersey is bracing for the impact of congestion pricing, including the potential for more traffic, pollutants and headaches as drivers look to avoid the congestion zone.

The borough that sits as the gateway to the world's busiest crossing expects more cars using the George Washington Bridge to dodge the tolls south of 60th Street in Manhattan.

"We're back on guard and have to deal with congestion pricing. It is a little frustrating, yes," said Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich.

Over 104 million vehicles use the George Washington Bridge annually, and on any given day, traffic is heavy on the bridge, and we have witnessed what congestion is like when traffic patterns change.

"You are potentially looking at Bridgegate all over again," Sokolich said.

For almost a week, Fort Lee became immobilized because the mayor refused to endorse the governor, so access lanes to the bridge were shut off and Fort Lee became a parking lot.

"I mean, I don't think anyone can predict with exactitude what's exactly going to happen with the traffic here, but the one thing we can guarantee... it ain't getting better with congestion pricing," Sokolich said.

The borough has gone so far as to meet with Google to have streets removed from the navigation system so frustrated motorists won't use local streets to find shortcuts around traffic.

"I can't make more roads, I can't widen them here in Fort Lee, I can't put more lanes on the bridge, I can't fit any more cars," Sokolich said. "We're going to be looking at a 20-25% increase in traffic volume."

If that spike in traffic at the bridge comes to fruition, it could resemble the Thanksgiving holiday every day. That puts more stress on Port Authority cops dealing with backups and delays.

"The job is the job no matter what, but obviously with more vehicles, more cars, more trucks, more people, that's more calls for service, more breakdowns, more motor vehicle accidents," said Port Authority PBA President Frank Conti.

The officers will have to maneuver through heavier traffic responding to emergencies.

"Expect that it's going to take you a little longer to get to where you need to go," Conti said. "My focus is more on my guys having the tools they need, the manpower they need to be safe."

The MTA disagrees mayor Sokolich's assessment of how much traffic will increase, citing a study used in the environmental assessment for congestion pricing, saying traffic will only increase 2 to 5%.

Finally, there are still lawsuits focused on the environmental impact of congestion pricing.

"If New York takes the action that they're about to take, those lawsuits are in fact our last stand. We are in harms way here in Fort Lee," Sokolich said.
