Medical Weight Loss in Englewood, NJ

Jean-Georges Vongerichten, one of the world's most famous chefs, is coming to Englewood.

Vongerichten, who has opened 60 restaurants worldwide and earned numerous culinary awards, is planning to move into the space that had housed the Shoe Inn on Dean Street.

"It's a real feather in Englewood’s cap, the region and the county," said Michael Wildes, the mayor of Englewood.

The restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, Wildes said. Construction has not begun yet, but turning a shoe store into a swanky all-day restaurant, will require major renovation, he noted.

Vongerichten could not be reached for comment.

Wildes, an immigration lawyer, said that the planning board had approved Vongerichten's plan a year ago, but that he had to recuse himself from the deliberations because, it turns out, he was Vongerichten's immigration lawyer. Vongerichten, who was born and raised in Alsace, France, came to New York City in 1986. "He jumped up like a little boy when he got his citizenship," Wildes said. "It was so lovely."

That French immigrant would go on to open restaurants, first in Manhattan, and eventually around the world, that had critics and diners swooning.

In New York City, he introduced diners to Thai-inspired Asian cuisine at his first restaurant, Vong, which received a Michelin star and closed after a 15-year run. (It is the restaurant where this reporter was introduced to peppercorn ice cream and for a time was her favorite NYC restaurant.)

He went on to open a bunch more restaurants including Mercer Kitchen, Spice Market, JoJo (it's housed in an elegant townhouse, a favorite of this reporter); Jean-Georges (housed in Trump Tower on Central Park West); ABCV (a fabulous vegetarian restaurant that's terrific whether you do or don't eat meat); The Fulton (a seafood restaurant in the Seaport District) and recently the Tin Building (a food hall under the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge).

In 2014, he ventured into the suburbs of New York City by opening the Inn at Pound Ridge in Westchester County.

Vongerichten claims to have invented chocolate lava cake in New York City, though chocolatier Jacques Torres disputes him. Among his signature dishes: egg caviar, scrambled eggs topped with a dollop of caviar, presented inside an egg shell), lobster tartine and garlic soup with sautéed frog legs.

Vongerichten has published several cookbooks, received a number of Michelin stars and has won six James Beard awards including Outstanding Chef (1998), Best New Restaurant (2005) and Outstanding Restaurant (2009).

A 2020 profile in the New York Times said that "no chef working in America is quite his equal. Many, like him, have created multiple restaurants. A very few, like him, are considered among the best. Even fewer are both. Mr. Vongerichten is able to do more, and he is able to do it better, his style augmented by extraordinary open-mindedness, a willingness to embrace the local culture wherever he might be."

And now he is set to embrace North Jersey.

"Everyone knows that Englewood is the capital of this region," Wildes said. "We just made Englewood more delicious to eat in."

Goal is to improve patient outcomes by extending advanced heart failure care to local communities

Working in collaboration with cardiologists from Englewood Health, ColumbiaDoctors experts will be offering consultations to advanced heart failure patients hospitalized at Englewood Hospital, the groups announced Thursday.

Outpatient care also will be provided by the two institutions, with ColumbiaDoctors providing heart failure care. The collaboration aims to reduce readmissions and improve outcomes for patients with advanced heart failure by expanding access to a world-class program in Bergen County.

Dr. Joseph De Gregorio, executive director of cardiovascular services at Englewood Hospital, was thrilled to make the announcement.

“One of our goals is to work together to establish a robust remote patient monitoring program to track and effectively manage care for heart failure patients in the outpatient setting,” he said. “This collaboration enables our health system to enhance our program by leveraging the expertise and resources of one of the world’s premier heart failure programs, benefiting some of our most critically ill patients.”

Advanced heart failure is a progressive and debilitating condition that requires strict adherence to therapies and lifestyle changes. It is the leading cause of hospitalization in the U.S. for adults 65 and older, and patients with heart failure are frequently readmitted to a hospital.

This partnership can have impact, said Dr. Hillary Cohen, the chief medical officer at Englewood Hospital.

“The launch of the Englewood Health and ColumbiaDoctors advanced heart failure collaboration exemplifies the dedication of our medical staff and community physicians to advancing cardiac care,” she said. “Through this initiative, our patients will benefit from all the expertise, research and technology of Columbia’s heart failure program right in their own community.”

Dennis Katechis, the chief of noninvasive cardiology at Englewood Hospital, agreed.

“The Englewood Health and ColumbiaDoctors advanced heart failure collaboration represents a significant milestone in our commitment to enhancing cardiac care for our communities,” he said. “We have been at the forefront of advanced cardiac care for northern New Jersey and the surrounding regions.

“Through this collaboration with ColumbiaDoctors, we will continue to strive to deliver the best possible care to our patients.”

here is a new bubble tea shop open in Englewood. The popular TSAOCHA – also known as TSAOCAA – translates from Chinese to “Holy Land of Tea” in English. This particular location of the franchise also offers Korean mochi donuts, with plans to introduce Korean hot dogs as well.

Bubble tea, invented in the 1990s in Taiwan, is traditionally made with powdered milk. However, TSAOCAA in Englewood breaks that mold by instead offering freshly brewed tea recipes. They brew each loose-leaf tea fresh to order in an espresso-like machine. Once cool, they mix the tea with a choice of organic milk, almond milk, soy milk, or coconut water. They drink is then shaken until the bubbles rise to the top. Brewing the bubble tea in this style is meant to be a healthier take on the otherwise dessert-like drink.

So far, fan favorite flavors at TSAOCAA include passion fruit and lime tea, in addition to the watermelon boba slush. Their brown sugar milk tea is also a hit, and it is in fact Owner Tony Chen’s favorite drink. He recommends ordering the drink with Oreos and milk foam, with either bubbles or brown sugar bubble milk.

Besides drinks, TSAOCAA offers food options such as Takoyaki (octopus balls) and gyoza (shrimp, pork, or chicken). They also serve spring rolls (vegetable or vegetable and pork), and shumai (pork and shrimp combo, or shrimp).

The 800-square foot space can seat six guests, and is primarily designed for takeout. They also offer delivery through a number of popular third-party apps. TSAOCAA has over 50 locations in total throughout the US, with four locations in New Jersey. The Englewood location is the newest local addition to the popular franchise.

Owner Tony Chen runs 15 Asian restaurants across New Jersey and Long Island, including Pho Express in Hoboken. He is also a YouTuber who runs the popular channel PlayCow, with over 5.2 million subscribers.

The campus is also home to a state-of-the-art STEM Center with a robotics room, labs, and math classrooms that encourage collaboration and discussion. Additionally, the school system provides peer and buddy mentor programs, advisory group support, dedicated breaks built into the school day, and 9th and 10th-grade seminars to explore topics from personal and social identity to stress management and mindfulness.

The Dwight School for Girls was founded in 1889 by Euphemia S. Creighton and Ellen W. Farrar as a college preparatory school. Ariel Espejo is opening Mexcal Tequila Bar at 24 N Van Brunt St. in the city sometime in February. Espejo, who runs Bent Hospitality with his partner, Michele Bittan, also runs Vida Garden, El Tango, Hidden Garden in Englewood and Tengo Steak in Moonachie.

Mexcal Tequila Bar will offer almost 80 different kinds of tequila, along with Mexican cuisine like tacos, enchiladas while a DJ will be on hand during the weekend. Espejo felt Englewood was missing an establishment like Mexcal.

"It's a convenient location," Espejo said. "We're right next to bergenPac. You can catch a bite before you go to a show. I feel Englewood was missing a modern Mexican restaurant. Everyone is used to going to the same Mexican restaurant. We offer a modern twist."

Espejo said he expects to attract a more modern crowd, that will listening to a DJ spin tunes while they are throwing back tequila shots.

"That's the vibe I want to achieve," Espejo said.

Born in Argentina, Espejo came to New Jersey when he was 10, and graduated from Teaneck High School. Espejo opened his first restaurant, El Tango in Moonachie when he was just 23. While running multiple restaurants sounds like a challenge, Espejo said he has been blessed with the right staff and management to help his restaurants thrive.

"We take everything one day at a time," Espejo, who has two younger brothers who look out for him and help out wherever the latest mini-crisis is, said.

Patrons should be most excited about the guacamole Espejo has in store for them.

"We have pineapple mango guacamole that is out of this world," Espejo said. "It's not like the same guacamole you can get anywhere."
