WOOD-RIDGE, NJ – After a sluggish first quarter, Wood-Ridge took the lead in the second quarter and blew open the game in the second half as the Blue Devils defeated Wallington, 87-55 in a NJIC Meadowlands Division boys basketball game on Senior Night on Monday.
Before the game, Wood-Ridge honored Ryan George, its only senior, for his contributions to the Wood-Ridge basketball program. The school also honored seven senior cheerleaders; Gabriella Annese, Nashla Burgos, Lia Crandall, Kaitlyn Miqueli, Caroline Nieto, Mia Scarvaglione, and Angelica Tapia Morocho. Each cheerleader and player was announced by Athletic Director Marc Sinclair, who was joined by their families at mid-court for family photos and one group photo.
Wallington led 14-13 at the end of one quarter, before Wood-Ridge rallied in the second quarter to take a 36-30 lead into halftime. Jacob Metcalfe had eight points and Lucas Mendoza six in the quarter to fuel the comeback.

Wood-Ridge blew the lead open in the third quarter, as Metcalfe had 10 points and George had eight as the Blue Devils opened up a 64-48 lead at the end of three quarters.
Metcalfe finished with a game high 24 points, while George and Christian Nario each chipped in 16 points for the Blue Devils. Daniel Gil Polanco had 20 points to lead Wallington, while Fiip Luckzo had 10.
The game was part of a boys/girls Senior Night doubleheader. Coverage of the girls Senior Night will follow.

There are the delis and banquet halls, a statue dedicated to General Casimir Pulaski of Poland (yes, the same Revolutionary War hero the Skyway was named after) and the Polish National Church of Transfiguration, which opened in 1925. If this heart-shaped borough in North Jersey conjures visions of pierogies, stuffed cabbage, borscht, blintzes and kielbasa, all that and more can be found there because Polish people started immigrating to Wallington more than 100 years ago. Its nickname is Little Poland.
“It’s a very Polish place and we want to continue to preserve our roots and also bring back to the community,” says Sebastian Stopka, whose family owns Tatra Haus, which specializes in Polish Highlander cuisine.
The restaurant specializes in the cuisine found near the Tatra mountains in Southern Poland. Well-known Polish foods are served, but opt instead regional dishes like grilled Highlander sheep cheese with bacon and cranberry sauce or rye bread with pork lard spread and pickles. “You wouldn’t see that anywhere else,” says Stopka.

Krakus Restaurant offers all the Polish classics (pierogies, stuffed cabbage, blintzes) and is a mainstay for family and friend gatherings. The pickle soup is particularly delicious, light and brine-y but with a hint of cream. A perk: Krakus has a full bar.
Just up Main Avenue, Chefski’s beckons. It’s mostly a grab-and-go but does have a couple tables. The menu, though concise, does offer a dozen types of pierogies. The ones I ordered managed to remain pleasingly light yet substantial, even after a 20-minute drive home. Be sure and grab a soft drink from the case, direct from Poland!

Got milk? This plant won’t be producing it much longer. Farmland Dairies has decided to close its Wallington facility which has been in operation for decades. That means 325 layoffs.
“It kinda came out of nowhere, I don’t think anyone was expecting this, so it was just kinda shocking,” said employee Stan Tomza.
The news also shocked Wallington’s business administrator.
“I was very surprised, no indication something like this could happen, especially before Christmas. Two managers walked into office the other day and handed me a note stating that they could be closing beginning of closing by Feb. 17th in three phases, two weeks apart, totally 325 jobs lost,” said Wallington Borough administrator Witold Baginski.
Also lost, tax revenue.
“Farmland Dairies one of largest tax payers in the borough, also one of the largest users for water. Sewage fees, 1.2 to 1.4m per year,” said Baginski.
Fred Stern, spokesperson for Borden Dairy, the owner of Farmland Dairies, says officials decided to close this plant to increase efficiency. Another factor, the industry is changing, fewer people are drinking milk.
When this plant closes, just three other milk processing facilities will remain in New Jersey and there will be fewer Farmland Dairy products on the shelves at New Jersey stores. It’s unclear if or how any of this will impact milk prices – they’re state-regulated. Our calls to the USDA were not returned. Meanwhile, area businesses say they will also feel the impact because many of the Farmland employees are longtime customers.
“It is going to effect us. It won’t put us out of business but I would say 10 percent of our business is generated from Farmland employees,” said Jumbo’s Pizza owner Faris Khatibi.
“We do have most of the people coming in to our job from there, so it will impact that also. And the businesses around here because they go there too. And I really do feel bad for them that they are losing their jobs right before Christmas,” said Natalia Gusciora
“A lot of people down, a lot of people here 20 to 25 years. So far a lot of people it’s devastating to say the least,” said Tomza.
Making matters worse, a milk distributing plant in town closed back in October. Another sign this once thriving industry is drying up.
