(NEXSTAR) – When it comes to air travel within the U.S., your ticket might get cheaper just based on where you depart from.
Data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation show the average cost of a domestic flight departing from 45 of the nation’s busiest airports – valuable information in 2022 as airplane ticket costs continue to march higher.
In April, airfares soared a record 18.6%, the largest monthly increase since record-keeping began in 1963. And hotel prices jumped 1.7% from March to April.
Southwest Airlines said last month that it foresees much higher revenue and profits this year as Americans flood airports after having postponed travel for two years. Southwest said its average fare soared 32% in the first three months of the year from the same period last year.
When it comes to the cheapest average fare, it pays to fly out of Florida. Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, took the top spot with an average cost of $233.36. Orlando International Airport came in second, at $241.01. Miami International ($236.76) and Tampa International (270.88) rounded out the top five after Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas ($247.53).
Fares are based on the total ticket value, including the price set by the airlines as well as any taxes and fees charged by an outside entity at purchase. The cost doesn’t include the price of optional services, such as baggage fees or frequent flyer and excludes any frequent-flyer or “zero” fares.

When Lakewood Ranch’s Sanddy Marchena received documentation in 1994 stating he was a U.S. citizen, being a teenager, he didn’t really realize the significance of the papers.
But he remembers his mother, Isabel Marizan, was ecstatic.
Reflecting on his life now at the age of 42, Marchena said his mother’s decision to emigrate her family from the Dominican Republic to the U.S. and obtain their citizenship led to a world of opportunities.
“I tell my wife all the time, that’s one of our most important documents,” Marchena said. “Now later in life, especially with what goes on in the world, I’m so thankful I’m a citizen of the United States. I’m thankful, but I’m also proud. I’m proud to call this country my country.”
In 1985, Marchena’s family moved to Manhattan, New York, after Marizan won a trip to New York as a reward for being the top salesperson for Mary Kay Cosmetics. She saw a world in which her sons could thrive and build successful lives.
At 5 years old, Marchena moved with his mother and brother Edwin to New York.
“I was young, but for my mother, I’m sure it was scary being the main provider for two children and one on the way,” Marchena said. “That key decision by my mother probably changed the trajectory of my life and my family now.”
After his family’s arrival in New York, Marizan’s first priority was for her children to learn English, Marchena said. His mother hired a tutor, and he went through a 30-day crash course in learning how to speak English.
“I must have learned well because I did really well in elementary school, grammar school and high school,” Marchena said. “It was important for my mom that as soon as we arrived I immerse myself in learning the language, even though to this day, she struggles with it.”
As a child, Marchena said he was like a sponge, wanting to learn anything he could and try new things, so he didn’t have a hard time learning the language or adjusting to life in the U.S.
But that doesn't mean he didn't notice the changes.
“I was a skinny kid from the Dominican Republic, and within six months of being here, I was pudgy and fat,” Marchena said with a laugh. “I discovered places like McDonald’s. I think that was one of my favorite places to go when I was 9 or 10 years old.”
Education has always been important to Marizan, so Marchena and his brothers always made sure they went to class, did their homework and studied.
“She believed education was the way to take our family to the next level,” Marchena said.
Marchena remembered his mother looking over his homework, even though she didn’t understand what she was looking at. But she always made sure he finished it.
The family moved to Union City, New Jersey, where Marchena continued his education.
His high school history teacher, Nellie Chapman, was instrumental in helping Marchena get accepted into Brown University. Chapman would take a group of students, including Marchena, on college tours.
“She believed before we even had an awareness that we could be successful and we could further ourselves,” Marchena said of Chapman.
Marchena recalled the day he received notice from Brown University regarding his application. He remembers watching a TV show where people were receiving acceptance letters to college.
“If it’s a regular letter, it means you didn’t get in; if you got in, it’s a big envelope,” he said. “I remember coming to my mailbox and seeing a big envelope. When I saw it was from Brown, I was excited. It’s the culmination of all my hard work. I’m not the smartest guy, but boy I will outwork you.”
When he graduated, Marchena gave his diploma to his mother as a symbol of gratitude for her influence in his achievement.
His mother, meanwhile, had been busy pursuing her own achievements, including owning multiple salons.
“If my mom had a 10th of the opportunities I’ve had in this great country, she’d be a known name,” Marchena said.
Marchena's career in banking with Capital One led to many good things in his life, including meeting his wife, Melodie Marchena, and learning about the Kiddie Academy franchise.
Marchena followed his mother's entrepreneurial example by purchasing two Kiddie Academies with his wife. They own Kiddie Academy of Cedar Knolls in New Jersey and took ownership of the Kiddie Academy of Lakewood Ranch on May 20.
He can’t wait for his mother to be able to visit him and his family in Lakewood Ranch so she can see the new business and the life he and Melodie have built for themselves and their daughters, Sophia and Camila.
“I can’t wait to see her eyes the first time she looks at the building,” Marchena said. “I know that she’ll be proud. I just wish I could do more.”
Marchena said becoming a U.S. citizen feels like a gift, and his job is to pass it on, whether that’s helping his staff at Kiddie Academy pursue their dreams or guiding his daughters to become contributing members of society.
Marchena wants to pass down his culture and Dominican heritage to his daughters.
“I don’t think you can go forward without understanding where you’re coming from,” he said.
Marizan’s decision to leave her family and friends in the Dominican Republic to move somewhere she only had been once before always has inspired Marchena to dream big.
“I need to be at least as courageous as my mom or at least 50% as courageous as her,” Marchena said. “That’s the great thing about this country: if you believe in yourself, if you’re someone who is resourceful, there’s nothing you can’t do. My mom had a vision, so for me, that’s what I try to impart on myself, my family, my two young daughters. I want them to have vision. There’s nothing they can’t accomplish.”

OKALOOSA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida airport employee was arrested after deputies said he stole over $16,000 worth of items from travelers’ luggage.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said 19-year-old Giovanni De Luca, an airline subcontractor who worked at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, faces two counts of grand theft.
According to a sheriff’s office news release, in July, a traveler reported her luggage, which had more than $1,600 worth of stuff inside, never got to her destination. It was listed as stolen or lost. There was an Apple AirTag, a tracking device, inside the suitcase which showed it was in the area of Mary Esther neighborhood.
On Tuesday, deputies said another traveler reported missing more than $15,000 worth of jewelry and other items from their luggage.
OSCO said they began interviewing employees who lived in the area of the Airtag’s location. That’s when they went to De Luca’s home.
The second victim’s items were found in his home. De Luca also admitted to going through the first victim’s luggage and removing the Airtag, though those stolen items were not found.
“This arrest is an example of excellent teamwork by our Airport Security Unit, our Investigators, and the Airport to find the person responsible for these thefts and make sure he is held responsible,” Sheriff Eric Aden said.
Apple’s AirTag, a coin-sized trackable device marketed as a tool to keep track of your belongings, has also garnered criticism in the past for being used by stalkers to follow their unsuspecting victims.
Now, however, Apple says the AirTag is designed to discourage “unwanted tracking.”
“If someone else’s AirTag finds its way into your stuff, your iPhone will notice it’s traveling with you and send you an alert,” Apple says. “After a while, if you still haven’t found it, the AirTag will start playing a sound to let you know it’s there.”

Here are some of the best places to go and pick apples:
New York:
Apple Dave’s Orchards – Expect macintosh, cortland, empire, honeycrisp and jonamac in September at this Warwick orchard. Come October, the orchard will have jonagold, fuji, gala, golden delicious, macoun, red delicious and rome apples. Admission is $5 a person for those over the age of 5. Visitors need to purchase a picking bag: $1 for a peck bag or $2 for a half bushel bag. A full peck bag costs $18 and a half-bushel bag costs $34.
Apple Ridge Orchards – Head to Warwick for a range of apple varieties. Expect gala, macintosh, honeycrisp, cortland and daybreak fuji from early to mid September; empire, liberty, macoun, crimson crisp and autumn crisp from mid to late September; jonagold, red delicious and ida reds from late September to early October; and golden delicious, mutsu/crispin, winesap, evercrisp, fuji and gold rush from mid to late October. In addition to the orchard, there’s also a petting zoo. General admission is $3 a person and it’s $34 for each ½ bushel of apples.
Fishkill Farms – This Hopewell Junction orchard is reservation only. Reservations include admission for five people ages 2 and up. Anyone beyond that group of five will be charged $5 per person. Hayrides are included in reservations. Visitors are asked not to eat fruit in the fields, but to instead bring apples home and wash them first. Picking containers are supplied by the farm.
Lewin Farms – This Calverton orchard also has pumpkins and a corn maze. Later in the year, there are Christmas trees for sale.
Maskers – Visitors to this Warwick farm can get prime reds and macintosh apples in the first week of September. Later in the month there will be granny smith and cortland apples, then empire, jonagold and mccowan apples. In late September, expect red delicious and sparta macintosh apples. There will be ida reds, romes, mutsu, golden delicious, smoothies and surprise apples in October. Admission and parking are free. It costs $33.95 for a half bushel of apples.
Stuart’s Fruit Farm – This farm is about an hour outside of New York City. In September, there are macintosh, jonamac, cortland, macoun and gala apples. In October, there are empire, northern spy, red delicious, golden delicious, jonagold, winesap, fuji, ida red, mutsu, cameo, sun crisps, nitany’s and braeburn apples. Pumpkins and hay rides are also available. There’s free parking and no orchard fee. Visitors need to use Stuart’s farm bags for apple picking at the Granite Springs orchard.
Wilkens Fruit and Fir Farm – Visitors to the Yorktown Heights farm can pick their own apples and pumpkins Wednesdays-Mondays each week between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Christmas trees are also available later in the year. Apples are best at the orchard in September. The orchard has gala, mcintosh, cortland, baldwin, golden delicious, red delicious, jonamac, empire, winesap, fuji, ida red, gravenstein, rhode island greening, wolf river, macoun and northern spy apples. Prices vary depending on weather and apple variety. There is no admission or parking fee, but there is a ¼ bushel minimum of apples for every 1-2 people entering the orchard.
New Jersey:
Alstede Farms – This orchard has dozens of varieties of apples. The site includes a calendar of expected dates for ripening for each type. Visitors can also pick potatoes and pumpkins in the fall. Once you get to the farm, you can buy a Pick Your Own Entry Ticket that includes a specific size container for whatever you’re interested in harvesting. Entry also includes access to a corn maze and the Blooming Giants Sunflower Trail.
Terhune Orchards – People can head to Princeton, NJ to visit this Orchard. There are gourds and pumpkins, in addition to the apples. Visitors can expect honeycrisp, early fuji, gala, jonathan, empire and crimson crisp in September. Come October, there will be red delicious, stayman winesap, cameo, granny smith pink lady, fuji and macoun apples. Guests ages 4 and up purchase bags at check in.
Wightman’s Farms – Apple picking is only on Saturdays and Sundays from 9-5 at this New Jersey orchard. Visitors can get access to the orchard with the All Access Farm Pass.

NEW YORK (PIX11) — With treacherous weather anticipated throughout the day Friday, some school districts shook up their schedules.
Some school districts announced full closures, others planned to open late, dismiss early or pivot to remote learning.
Rain is expected to turn heavy overnight, forecasts show. Temperatures will plummet from the 30s down to the mid teens, which could turn the rain to ice — either as sleet or as freezing rain. Some flurries are also possible later on Friday.
