MOONACHIE — Matthew Vaccaro received just eight votes in November’s election. But the 27-year-old write-in candidate was sworn-in to a seat on the borough Board of Education on Tuesday night.
Vaccaro narrowly won the seat over Frank Cardia, who received five votes as a write-in candidate.
"It's an honor to be able to give back to where you came from," said Vaccaro, a fourth grade teacher in Rutherford.
Vaccaro said he was surprised but pleased when he learned he had won the seat.
"I heard there was a seat open and I kind of talked to a couple of people and said, 'You know if the seat doesn’t get filled, I've lived in this town for 20-something years now and it would be a nice way to give back,' " he said. "I want to make sure these kids get the best education possible."
Vaccaro's father, Board President David Vaccaro, was the lone candidate on the ballot for the two open three-year terms on the school board.
After 16 years on the board, he said he hopes to continue to work to improve students' test scores during his next term.
"We have the school going in the right direction and I want to keep it that way," he said.

After the father and son took their oaths of office, the board reappointed David Vaccaro as board president and James Campbell as vice president.
Edmond Monti, who won an unexpired one-year term on the board with 166 votes, was absent from Tuesday’s meeting. He will be sworn-in at the board's next meeting.
On Wednesday, the Borough Council will hold its annual organization meeting.
Democratic incumbents Antonio Cirillo and Manuel Martinez Jr., who garnered 342 votes and 311 votes, respectively, will be sworn-in for three-year terms. Challenger Kamran Ali received 21 votes.

MOONACHIE — First came the floodwaters, and then came the cold.
Many residents of two mobile home parks that were completely submerged during Hurricane Sandy are still waiting on insurance settlements and FEMA relief to perform vital repairs to their units, like replacing insulation to keep the cold air out.
"Most homeowners tell us they've been cranking the heat at 75, just to keep the temperature at 55 inside," said Bob Williams, a site manager for Rebuilding Together Bergen, which has been working with Americorp's National Civilian Community Corps to install new insulation underneath trailers.
They were finishing up work underneath the home of Geraldine McCarroll Wednesday, hampered slightly by the snow and cold that settled on Bergen County this week. McCarroll, who moved to the Vanguard Mobile Home Community in 2006, saw her trailer destroyed when a large tree fell in the park at the height of the storm. It crushed a neighbor's mobile home and McCarroll's shed and overhang, coming to rest atop her laundry room and living room.
"I've lost everything over there," she said. "The water went all through it."
McCarroll spent time in shelters and hotel rooms, and with family, until her daughter, who also lived in the park, found herself an apartment and offered McCaroll her unit, which itself saw flood damage during the storm.
McCarroll said she's been struggling to get approval for FEMA relief because, like many residents of the mobile home park, she doesn't have a copy of her title. She said that Vanguard's front office has written several sealed letters verifying that she's a homeowner in the park, but after every trip to the temporary FEMA offices at the Bergen County administration building, she's come home empty-handed.
"I've gone to Hackensack three times already," she said.
Her daughter's home was insured, but the family didn't have flood insurance, she added. So, like many homeowners in Moonachie, there's a good chance they won't see any insurance money at all.
It wasn't until a neighbor signed her up for Rebuilding Together's free relief program that work on her daughter's mobile home could begin.
"I feel so bad for them," she said of the 20-somethings covered head-to-toe in protective Tyvek suits. "It's such a yucky day to be under there."
The corps members come from all over the country as part of a 10-month residential community service program run by the federal government. They're being housed at Montclair State University and will spend two and a half weeks helping Rebuilding Together replace insulation underneath the flooded-out homes.
Williams, the site manager, said the corps members were given training in how to install the new insulation — and the potential problems they'd encounter, from leaky pipes to exposed wires — before being sent into the muddy crawlspaces beneath the mobile homes.
"It's kind of a learn-as-you-go process," said Rachel Hanson, a corps member from Illinois.
Because Rebuilding Together and the Americorps crew work free of charge, Williams said it saves the residents of the mobile home park the $2,500-$3,000 the work would normally cost — the better part of the total reimbursement they'd be eligible for from FEMA.
At a cost of about $400 per home for materials, the groups complete about two mobile homes a day, and hope to repair every unit in the Vanguard park and nearby Metropolitan Mobile Homes that needs it.
McCarroll said she never expected work to be completed on her home so quickly — and free of charge — helping her save money for other much-needed repairs on her trailer.
"It's just amazing all of the help that came in here," she said, fighting tears. "They're so great."

It’s for this reason that CEO of Imperfect Produce Ben Simon started his business three and a half years ago. Imperfect Produce recently added a distribution center in Moonachie – the company’s 21st market -- serving the North Jersey community from Newark to New York.

Imperfect Produce takes “ugly” but perfectly edible fruits and vegetables deemed unfit for grocery stores, discounts them, and redistributes them in custom-sized boxes that get shipped to customers’ homes.
“Sometimes it’s issues with the produce’s shape, sometimes it’s because of size, it could be too big or too small,” said Simon.
Boxes are available with mixed fruits and vegetables, all fruit, all veggie and all organic. You can get a box for one to two people (about 7 pounds of produce) up to a box that serves six to 10 people (about 23 pounds of produce). Customers can also change the frequency of produce deliveries from once a week to every other week. Boxes range from $11 to $43 (for the all organic, six to 10 people box).
Imperfect Produce is now also offering other items including quinoa and granola. Simon gives the example of selling not-quite-tri-colored quinoa and granola slightly past its suggested sell-by date in the boxes.
Folks can also customize which fruits, vegetables and other items are in their box from week to week.
According to Simon, 20 billion pounds of food is wasted on farms every year. He began his food conservation work by starting a non-profit called Recovery Network at the University of Maryland when he was in college after noticing that uneaten cafeteria food was getting tossed out.
“I felt it was a total shame,” he said. “So, I created a non-profit to recover that extra food and donate it.” Recovery Network is now utilized at more than 200 colleges. Simon took that same mission and applied it to tossed out produce from farms for Imperfect Produce.
So far, Imperfect Produce has recovered over 40 million pounds of produce by selling its boxes, and donated 2.2 million pounds of produce to food banks. The New Jersey center will donate to the New Jersey Community Food Bank.

"It's devastating," said Gonzalez, standing barefoot in the waterlogged street wearing a black jacket and black cargo shorts.
As Sandy barreled through New Jersey on Monday night, floodwaters from creeks surged into trailer park communities like Vanguard Mobile Homes, located off Moonachie Avenue. Gonzalez has lived there with his wife, Heather, and stepson for two years.
Parts of Moonachie Avenue were still under three feet of water today.
The intersection of Moonachie and Washington Avenues is still completely submerged. Some SUVs have plowed through the water while other cars divert through a waterlogged Sunoco gas station where pumps are shut down. But most cars just back up and turn around.

He and his girlfriend, Ele, along with his 7-year-old son Nathan, walked up and down the street trying to figure out what to do.
The two cars were filled with water, he said.
"The cup holders were full of water."
Gonzalez had just finished rebuilding the deck for their home on 5th East Street in time for Heather's 32nd birthday on Sept. 12. But the flooding ravaged his home, separating the hammered wood on the deck. The waters picked up and moved his shed to an entirely different spot, he said.
It all happened so fast, Gonzalez said.
Around 10:30 p.m. he had ducked out to go to the store. Soon he returned home and was having a cigarette outside when the waters came rushing.
"The water came up so fast," he said. "There was no time to evacuate."
All they had time to do was throw valuables like his wife's work portfolio, family albums and his stepson's video games up onto the couch and bed. Then the family and Gonzalez's sister, Elizabeth, went to Heather's parents who live in the park farther from the creek.
Power was out but they stayed up all night, Gonzalez said. He worried about the four tall trees surrounding his trailer.
"I was here all last night through the worst of it. I'm not going to leave now," he said.
