TWP. OF WASHINGTON — Wood-Ridge rolled out a new quarterback and the same defensive intensity that led it to an 8-2 record last season.
Senior Jimmy Masucci ran for two touchdowns, including a 66-yarder, to help the Blue Devils repel Wallkill Valley, 26-14, in Friday’s Jim Grasso Kickoff Classic at Westwood Regional High School.
Wood-Ridge (1-0) allowed 10 points per game during a 7-0 start that led it to the 2022 NJIC Tournament final.
To open the new season, coach Joe Cutrona’s team took a 20-0 lead to the fourth quarter against an SFC opponent that went 6-3 a year ago.
“We scheduled this game for that Super Football Conference-NJIC matchup to show everyone that the NJIC has got some really good football teams,” Cutrona said.
The Rangers (0-1) could have met Wood-Ridge in last year’s North 2, Group 1 playoffs, but both teams were knocked out by Cedar Grove.
Wallkill Valley continued its success in the passing game on Friday, as QB Zack Clarken completed 19-of-27 throws for 258 yards passing and two touchdowns.
However, the Blue Devils allowed only 19 yards rushing, while Masucci gained more than that on his second TD run.
Wood-Ridge scored on its first two drives thanks to Antonio Loyola (8-yard run) and Masucci (13-yard run).
Wallkill Valley gave itself scoring chances thanks to special teams. Clarken returned a missed field goal 47 yards into Wood-Ridge territory late in the first half, and Jaden McNeil brought back the third-quarter kickoff 52 yards. But both drives ended with fourth-down stops.
“You had all gas, no brakes the first two drives, and then we kind of let up,” Cutrona said. “You can’t have that, especially with the schedule we play.”
McNeil caught a 19-yard TD with 5:30 to go, pulling the Rangers within 20-7. Three plays later, Masucci went 66 yards to ice it.
Masucci completed 13-of-20 passes for 168 yards and ran 17 times for 117.
McNeil caught 7 passes for 93 yards, while teammate Nick Mendoza had 5 catches for 99 yards and a TD.

The Weequahic defense, which has given up nine points all season, rounded into form in the second quarter, shutting down the Wood-Ridge offense, and forcing a three-and-out. Marshall capped a seven play drive with a six-yard run, with Cisse’s kick being good, to make the score 14-0.
Wood-Ridge’s third drive resulted in a turnover, giving Weequahic a chance to kick a field goal right before the half, but the snap was mishandled, and Weequahic went into the locker room up 14-0.
Taking the second half kickoff back to the Wood-Ridge 22-yard line, it took only four plays for Marshall o score from 11 yards out and a 20-0 lead. Cisse’s kick was blocked right back to him, and he ran into the end zone, but the try was ruled no good since the defense did not touch the ball after the block.
A three-and-out from Wood-Ridge score in four plays, as Marshall took the ball the final nine yards. Another bad snap led to failed extra point and Weequahic led 26-0.
Following another three-and-out, Weequahic quarter Paul Jones III hit Darrel Barrow for a 69 yard pass down the center of the field for a 32-0 lead. Once again, Wood-Ridge blocked the extra point.
On Weequahic’s next possession, Cisse, considered one of the best kickers in the area, kicked a 32-yard field goal with 49 seconds left in the third quarter to make the score 35-0, making the fourth quarter a running clock.
Weequahic’s final touchdown came on a 61 yard interception return from Ja’Shaynes Hayes.

“It’s truly an honor to be the coach of this high school baseball team,” Carcich continued. “This town bends over backward to support you in every way and the foundation of this sectional championship is set by the school, town, recreation, and families. They’ve been waiting for a while and I’m glad we could give it to them.”
Carcich also applauded his team’s ability to adapt to whatever situation arose, including Mike Marchitelli who ended the game by striking out Cedar Grove’s Nicholas Droge.
“He was a starter for most of the year but, due to some injuries and everyone coming back healthy, accepted the role of a relief pitcher and got the win on the mound,” Carcich said.
Marchitelli also contributed to a major turning point in the game when he struck out catcher Nicolas Russo with the bases loaded in the sixth to keep the game tied at three.
Wood-Ridge jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to RBI singles from Braden Negro and Devin Arce. However, Cedar Grove (19-10) answered with a run in the third and two in the fifth.
