GLEN ROCK, NJ - The Glen Rock wrestling team took on Fair Lawn at Glen Rock High School on February 9, a busy evening at the school with the second night of the high school musical "Beauty and the Beast" taking over the stage.

In the gym, Fair Lawn took the early lead in the meet 6-0 with Alexander Vargas over Eitan Revich by pin. Glen Rock would win the next three contests to make it 21-6. Fair Lawn managed to cut that lead, but Glen Rock came back and the score was 30-12.

Things got interesting after that as the Fair Lawn team would be hit with a team misconduct call after the Fair Lawn coach did not like an official's call. Fair Lawn cut the Glen Rock lead to 34-30 with two matches left.

The next match in the 165-pound weight class featured Glen Rock's Daniel Zolotnitsky versus Luca D`Angelo of Fair Lawn. From the start of the match, it looked as though it could go either way, making it hard to tell who could end up coming out on top.

Zolotnitsky would get the first points of the contest, taking a 2-0 lead. The contest would change with D`Angelo getting the momentum and possibly pinning Zolotnitsky. The Fair Lawn bench was on their feet cheering on D`Angelo, and the Fair Lawn fans were going nuts.

Zolotnitsky managed to fight off the pin but was losing on points. For a second time, Zolotnitsky looked like he could get pinned. The crowd cheered their favorite in a rowdy, loud contest.

Fair Lawn fans wanted the referee to call the pin, and for the second time, Zolotnitsky would fight off the pin. Zolotnitsky managed to wrestle out and get to his feet, still losing on points. Then, in a blink, the momentum changed, Zolotnitsky had D`Angelo on the mat and would end up getting the next points with the referee lying on the mat, checking to see if Zolotnitsky did indeed have a pin. The referee would put his hand to the mat indicating that Zolotnitsky had pinned D`Angelo.

Glen Rock went from a possible pin to winning the match and the meet.

Cristian Mason of Fair Lawn beat Glen Rock's Nick Tufano 7-4 on points.

In the end, Glen Rock would win 40-33.

After the match, Glen Rock coach Corey Fitzpatrick spoke about the exciting contest.

"I always knew this dual meet with Fair Lawn would be close," Fitzpatrick said. "We had some big pins early on from freshmen Johnny Emes at 106 and Rohi Hubert at 113, plus we knew Jake Rickett at 285 and Adrian Galvez at 215 were favorites for their matches, and they got the job done.

"We then won toss-up matches at 126 with Andrew Davidoff being bumped up from 120, at 144 with Nigel Milan being bumped up from 138 and Danny Zolotnitsky pinning at 165. So, in terms of history repeating itself, on this occasion we righted our wrongs from a few weeks ago and learned from that experience. The team wrestled well for the most part against Fair Lawn, and it showed in the result.

"I think there were a few highlight matches before the match at 165, but obviously, with the match going back and forth with both opponents fighting off their backs, it made for good entertainment," Fitzpatrick said. "The match with Zolotnitsky at 165 sealed the deal on the dual meet which made it such an important highlight match. We still had Nick Tufano waiting at 175 who I had faith in to win if he had to, but it was nice to seal the dual meet victory before the last match of the night."

I write to express the historical perspective and point of view upon learning of the opening of the new 11-apartment building at Rock and Harding Road in Glen Rock that will provide two one-bedroom, six two-bedroom, two three-bedroom, and one-studio low-income housing apartments. This significant step towards inclusivity and compassion is an opportunity to demonstrate the values that make our community truly exceptional. A safe place to live, good schools, plentiful recreational areas, and good neighbors are what we all strive for in search of a place to live no matter what our household income may be.

The leading case concerning affordable housing advocacy started with the landmark New Jersey Supreme Court decision Southern Burlington NAACP v. Mount Laurel Township (1975) The Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional for any municipality in the state to zone in ways that would make it impossible to build housing for people with low and moderate incomes. The decision, known as Mount Laurel, set guidelines for townships to provide affordable housing.

Municipalities that filed Declaratory Judgment actions were granted immunity from lawsuits of builders until they reached an agreement with Fair Share Housing Center as to how and the amount of Affordable housing it would build to meet its fair share.

The Borough of Glen Rock settled its case with Fair Share Housing Center by agreeing to build 393 affordable units, the Rock and Harding Road property was rezoned to permit multiple-family housing (11 low-income units), and overly zones would be created at CVS property, and downtown commercial areas to permit residential units to be built. The agreement was approved by Bergen County Superior Court Judge Gregg Padovano. Glen Rock was granted immunity from builder remedy lawsuits and a Final Judgment was entered in October 2023. Immunity was extended through July 1, 2025.

As our community of 12,000 people continues to evolve, it's inspiring to witness the collective efforts that went into realizing this important project.

Our Borough provided $605,000 to purchase the property for the developer at Rock and Harding Road from an Affordable Housing fund. 175 Rock Road (CVS property) recently settled its application to build 69 apartments whereby 14 will be affordable units. These new housing developments embody the spirit of empathy and unity, demonstrating that we are more than just a collection of houses – we are a community that cares.

But the question remains how distant does our obligation extend? And at what cost?

In an era where economic disparities are increasingly evident, it's encouraging to see our community stepping up to address the challenges faced by those with limited financial means. The creation of affordable housing not only offers a safe and stable environment for low-income individuals and families, but it also contributes to the overall well-being of our town. By providing access to housing that is affordable and secure, we are promoting the dignity and potential of all our neighbors, regardless of their economic background. This new building isn't just about bricks and mortar; it's about building bridges and fostering connections. As we interact with our new neighbors, we have an opportunity to learn from their experiences, share our own stories, and ultimately grow stronger as a collective whole.

On a personal note, I grew up financially disadvantaged. However, through hard work and sacrifices, we were able to achieve our goals. I am content with giving someone a helping hand to achieve their goals, but not a blank check.

In conclusion, I believe that this new affordable-income housing development marks a milestone in the history of our community. It is a reminder that our unity, empathy, and shared values are what truly make us strong and resilient. Let us continue to embrace this spirit of inclusivity and compassion as we move forward, striving to create a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Please welcome our new neighbors.

"A show unlike any other produced by Paper Mill Playhouse, this special concert features 122 talented young performers, including Rising Star Award winners and nominees," said the organizers. "The 2023 New Voices Concert showcases the rock musicals that changed the landscape of the Broadway industry and became instant classics in the process, drawing on songs from Hair, Godspell, Rock of Ages, Dear Evan Hansen, Rent and Hamilton and many more famous jukebox musical hits."

New Voices and the Paper Mill Playhouse Summer Musical Theater Conservatory are supported by the Investors Foundation and Citizens Philanthropic Foundation. The Hearst Foundations are Paper Mill’s Education & Outreach Partner.

Performances of We Will Rock You will be held on Friday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, July29 at 1:30 PM and 7:30 p.m. at 22 Brookside Drive, Millburn.

Paper Mill's theater programs and annual Rising Star Awards for high school plays have been won by future Broadway stars from New Jersey such as Anne Hathaway and Lauren Benanti.

“We believe that this program allows young performers an opportunity to thrive and ultimately live their dream of being professional performers. From the first day of class all the way through opening night of New Voices, we require our students to rise to the demands of this rigorous program,” stated Lisa Cooney, Paper Mill Playhouse Director of Education, Outreach and Access.

The Paper Mill Playhouse Summer Musical Theater Conservatory is a demanding program allowing students to enhance their individual performance potential while developing a broadbase of theater experience and knowledge.

“New Voices is an amazing opportunity to see the stars of tomorrow,” commented Mark S.Hoebee, Paper Mill’s producing artistic director.

Paper Mill Playhouse, recipient of the 2016 Regional Theatre Tony Award, is a nationally renowned, not-for-profit theater under the direction of Mark S. Hoebee (Producing Artistic Director) and Mike Stotts (Executive Director). Glen Rock Pizzeria Celebrates 40 Years in the Community

GLEN ROCK, NJ - The year was 1982 and people were waking up to Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder singing "Ebony and Ivory" on the radio, Ronald Reagan was president and a new pizzeria was opening on Rock Road.On November 30, 1982, John's Boy opened its doors for the first time and customers got their first taste of pizza, made special by the owners. Fast forward to today, John's Boy is still a place to hang out after school.

In addition to pizza, the restaurant has a wide range of freshly made pasta dishes and salads, along with heroes and wraps.

If you stop by the shop at 206 Rock Road from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday, you may catch Umberto throwing dough in the air as he watches a European soccer game.

The business has been supportive of local fundraisers, such as the Harlem Wizards game for the Byrd School PTA, which takes place at Glen Rock High School.

On November 28, 2018, Mayor Bruce Packer honored the business for 35 years of serving the town.

John (Giovanni) Porco, Umberto's father who passed away in April 2023, was a beloved member of the community, as noted in Gabriel Bullaro's eulogy. "The immigrant pizzeria owner, who, with his wife Francesca, have been an integral part of our Glen Rock community for many years. John was not just a business owner, but a kind and welcoming presence that brought joy and comfort to so many people in Glen Rock. Hard work, 10–12-hour days, six days per week and other sacrifices, is what made them successful."

When the news of John's death filtered onto Glen Rockers, the unofficial town Facebook group, tributes came pouring in. Residents left flowers and cards along with photos outside the business's door. "Mr. John's Boy", as he was affectionately known, meant so much to the town that the Borough Council held a moment of silence in his memory.

The pizzeria closed for a week after his death.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, John's Boy remained open for takeout orders.

Patti, one of the restaurant's managers and daughter to founder John Porco, said COVID was a "scary" time for them.

"No one was coming out at the time," she said. They developed delivery throughout Glen Rock, Fair Lawn, Ridgewood and Hawthorne, a service that still remains.

Lifelong resident Mayor Kristine Morieko said she has fond memories of John's Boy when she was growing up.

"My brother, Peter, worked at John’s Boy - alongside Patti - when they were in high school - and then Umberto worked there with them both!

"Back in the 90s there used to be a divide - those who preferred John’s Boy and those who preferred Turvinos. We were team John's Boy.

"As mayor, John’s Boy is one of those amazing local businesses that not only provides amazing food (my favorite is the Mediterranean salad with chicken cutlet!) but they consistently support our schools (fundraisers, sponsoring sports teams, and hiring students)."

She adds, "I love that they know all the kids - they provide a safe place for them to gather!"

Long-time customer and resident Nick DeAngelo said, "John's Boy is hands down the best pizzeria in New Jersey. I've been going there since I was a kid when John Porco, the original owner of the business, was tossing pies up in the air.

"I got to meet him, his wife Francesca, daughter Patti, son-in-law Umberto, and the entire staff. They became the most friendly people in Glen Rock over the years. After John retired, Patti and Umberto became the owners of John's Boy. He would stop in once in a while to see how things were going. John was a dedicated man and always kind to everyone who walked in the door to grab a slice of pizza. When I was a kid, my dad would take me to John's for lunch and many years later, we still have lunch there together. Umberto and the staff always manage to prepare the meals the way you want it from their variety of pizza, entrees, wings, appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and Italian ices to choose from. John's Boy Pizzeria is my go-to spot in town to hangout, share some laughs, and have a delicious meal.

RIDGEWOOD AND GLEN ROCK, NJ — Apparently, it's not only back-to-school season; it's also ranking season.

On Tuesday, U.S. News and World Report released its annual list of the best high schools in the nation, and in the state. It assigned a number to every public high school in the country.

According to this year's 2023-2024 Best High Schools rankings, the NJ and national ranks for high schools in Ridgewood and Glen Rock are:

U.S. News reviewed 25,000 schools and ranked 17,680 of them, as well as 399 in New Jersey.

Families can use the annual rankings to compare schools at the national, state and local levels on factors such as academic performance, graduation rates and college readiness, according to a news release.

Not Just Test Scores

In general, the highest-ranked schools had students who performed well on state assessment for math, reading and science, U.S. News said.

They also performed strongly in meeting the needs of underserved students, U.S. News said, including students who are Black, Hispanic or from low-income households. The schools had a breadth of curriculum offerings and high graduation rates, and their students performed well on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.

U.S. News said eleven of the top 20 ranked schools were charter or magnet schools.

In national rankings, the top five schools are, respectively: The Early College at Guilford, Greensboro, North Carolina; Signature School at Evansville, Indiana; The School for Advanced Studies in Miami; The Davidson Academy of Nevada at Reno; and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology at Alexandria, Virginia.

Earlier this month, Niche.com also released its national and statewide high school rankings.

Most public school districts in New Jersey start after Labor Day this year (which is Monday, Sept. 4, 2023).
